Thanks for this video! I took the plunge after your last video and replaced my drive as well. A couple of notes on my experience: 1 - 500GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe drive for $87 from Amazon. 2 - NVMe adapter for $17 from Amazon. 3 - NVMe external enclosure for $37 from Amazon. 4 - NVMe heat sink $6 from Amazon I put the EVO in the enclosure and used Carbon Copy to transfer info from old drive to new. I moved the EVO drive into the Mac Pro. Done! I also bought an extra NVMe to put in the enclosure to have another external backup drive. I also took the plunge and upgraded from the 6 core to 12 core CPU with a used on from eBay. I also upgraded the RAM from 32GB to 64 GB. After all that, I don't even notice any difference in day to day use. LOL. Oh well. I feel better at least. I also think the resale value will recover all the cost if I ever sell it. Cheers!

John H The SSD upgrade is the only thing which is still missing in my Mac Pro. I went from an „almost“ basic config to the „almost“ maxed out config. Starting from 3,7 GHz Quad (4), 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and D300 2 GB to 2,4 GHz Dodeca (12), 64 GB RAM, still 256 GB (will be replaced with an EVO 970 1 TB) and D700 6 GB. It was a very interesting but also not so cheap project😅 Here are some of my benchmark tests I did while proceeding the upgrade: browser.geekbench.com/user/REDfaischt

I realize this is an old video, but the SSD metal backer is not a het sink, but a stiffer. I was part of the launch manufacturing team for this system, and we found that in drop tests the SSD would break in certain drop test scenarios. As such the hardware team added the SSD stiffer to aid with overall rigidity. The adhesive is double sided, and very strong (as you noted). You can remove it, if you heat up the SSD stiffer with heat gun. Cheers and love the videos.

I got a made for Mac Pro SSD from OWC so that I could replace the original 1TB as well as upgrade to Mac OS 12 (Monterey). It worked quite well and I can get a couple more years out of my Trash Can Mac without the added expense of getting a Mac Studio, at least for now.

I've been following along with this as I try and squeeze the most performance possible out of my own 2013 Mac Pro. As well as the SSD, CPU and RAM upgrades I've also recently gone down the eGPU route. My original D300's are absolutely useless, I've "replaced" them with a Vega64 in a Razer Core X. The performance increase is incredible for my uses (Photo and some video editing). The hardware cost a little under £500 and is by far the most noticeable improvement so far.

I took the plunge. Yes I am now iOEverything. For me I studied what others are doing for video editing and specifically 1080. I have no desire to go back to 4k anytime soon. I am the leader in my genre so why when no one else is? This was about what can I buy for right at $2000 and I am way less than that before upgrades. But my system is coming with 512GB from the start. So I will need to go from 4 core to 12 and maybe upgrade the D300s down the road or go eGPU in the mean time. I priced the M1 Mac Mini and eGPU at $3800. And that was way more than I wanted at present. And there was no way I was spending $6k plus how much more on a 7,1. Thank you for you very matter of fact videos. Everything else is very snarky about this system. But it is a classy system I have always admired. And it has to be better than my 2018 Dell XPS with 1TB SSD and 32GB RAM and all the ridiculous file IO errors and lost connections to internet. And I still have $1000 for upgrades or Mac Book Pro for taking my channel on the road. That is why I am building my system with and MVE 2TB SSD for actual files and projects. I am looking at 20TB+ of combining 8 years of 2TB into a NAS that is super reliable. It you have any thoughts or videos please link them to me.

Great vid. I will be checking out your other material as well. Recently, needing to upgrade from my current 7 year old iMac graphics workstation,I took advantage of a seller with a base model 6,1 on eBay that bidding closed out on Christmas morning. No one else was paying attention at the time and I got a fair deal on a newer machine. I upgraded the SSD to Adata 1tb, removed the mismatched 12gb DDR4 and installed a matching set for 64gb as well as the 12-Core CPU kit. After getting everything sorted out and into a (mostly) trouble-free graphics machine, I would have waited out for a D500 or D700 GPU version to pop up. Chatting with others with similar upgrades, apparently the sweet spot for graphics is an 8-core and not the 12. Al told, I am happily under $2k for the whole machine with its misc. add-ons.

As far as buying faster Apple drives based on their speed. Those amazing speeds are on PCIE 3 X4 connections like teh 2015 and later Macbook Pro. The drive will mount and work, but will top out around 1800Mbps. As yours did. You'll never cross over 2gbps mark. No not even with 3 drives. The interface is saturated. Strange you don't address the OWC/Macsales SSDs. I've been using them for 10 years and they are a solid company that stands behind their products. They are also often faster than what Apple sells. As far as whether the 2013 Mac Pro is still viable? Well I just realized today my Mac is 7 years old. It still edits video and mixes music just fine. The key is to max out the ram to 64GB, and have a good external storage solution, like a raid array. Also, don't beat up teh USB too hard, it's not very robust. Stick to Thunderbolt and keep in mind there are really only 3 Thunderbolt ports mated to 6 jacks. This will last me at least until the M1 arch becomes dominant.

Just a remark, i bought one of those nvme adapters and put a samsung 970 in it, but initially it worked just x2, so no speed increase, but after some googling, i had to tape one side of the contacts with a kapton tape, and YES it's working x4. Great content, thanks Update: You want to cover the soldered header pins on the adapter socket, not the pins itself, to prevent a short to the metal cover of the original socket.

I wonder if it gets any better if I tape it.... in theory the sabrent drive should go 2000/3000mbps speeds. Thanks
@VoltVandal
@VoltVandal 4 жыл бұрын
@@ofromdamo yes, i'm getting around 1300mbps, more is not possible in our mac pros. If ur at this speed, so you do not need to tape anything, ur good to go, only if u get the half of the speed, this means, that the adapter has a short to the metal cover of the original socket.

Thanks for the plug! :) Yes, the Amfeltec is not for everyone, but it definitely simplifies outside peripherals and has its own PCIe lane vs sharing the 3 x TB busess across 6 external ports - becomes problematic sharing bandwidth if you have multiple 4k monitors and audio interfacing. I also found when I was travelling around with it, you could throw the machine in a bag and not worry about forgetting work drives. Using those little M.2 adapters - did that interfere with the mount screw position of the SSD? Lookslike it would shift the drive mount position ever so slightly.
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 4 жыл бұрын
Good shout on the Thunderbolt bandwidth - I should have considered that. If I could just find one at a more reasonable price... I haven't personally used one of the adapters, but I believe the Apple SSD is longer. I guess the adapter is based on using a 2280 M.2 (the size code is width by length - e.g. 2280 = 22mm x 80mm). Pretty sure the Apple SSD is longer than 80mm, though I haven't measured it.

When I booted back up the next day, no signal from HDMI on my monitor. Tried diff cables and even plugged in an old mac LED monitor via mini display port, with nothing. So either its a software/driver issue, but how am I supposed to even reformat a mac without seeing the screen? or the GPU has incidentally failed. @ConstantGeekery 3 жыл бұрын
I seem to recall early versions of the EVO Plus needed a firmware update to work properly in the 2013 Mac Pro - that may not be the case now. There’s also the standard 970 EVO which is compatible. Whatever you put in, you won’t be getting those speeds because you are limited by PCIe 2.0 x4 bandwidth, which is 2000 MB/sec. Once you factor in the overhead, in the real-world you should still be just over double the speed of your existing Apple SSD.

Hi there. I know this is an older video. Just hoping that there is an answer from the community. In trying to purchase and install a NVME SSD with socket for the 6,1 - I wonder - is that an upper ceiling for the capacity? Could I install a 4tb SSD for example? I've only seen mentions of 1tb and even OWC doesn't go higher than 2tb. While this may seem silly, it's just a thought for having one drive neatly storing all the data...instead of an external...which is sort of the point of having a nice compact trashcan
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery Жыл бұрын
OWC did make a 4TB SSD. It was wider than a normal SSD so that they could put a heatsink on and get clearance with the case. I suspect physical dimensions and thermals may be the limiting factors, but I don’t see why the Mac Pro wouldn’t support 4TB. I haven’t personally tried it. I’d suggest buying from a supplier with a no-nonsense return policy if you plan to try it. From what I’ve seen, NVMe SSDs on adapters give good speeds. The limitation is the PCIe 2.0 4x interface, so you won’t get the full performance of say a 970 EVO, but it will go as fast as the interface allows. You can’t do Internet restore with NVMe and you may also find Bootcamp to be less straightforward (still possible though).

Have you had any issues with the 970 evo drive at all?? I just got a wd sn550 and it has sleep and boot issues.

I don’t use a 970 EVO inside my Mac - I have one in an external enclosure, but the drive in my Mac is an official generation 3 Apple SSD. I know others who use the 970 EVO (not the EVO Plus) in the Trashcan without issue.

Nice video. Q: can you put the SSD’s in Raid0 and then carbon copy your original copy onto this Raid0 and bootup?

EDIT: Leaving this comment in place, but the advice is wrong. Please read the full thread. === Interesting question. Obviously you would need something like the Amfeltec AngelShark carrier board... but I see no reason why you couldn't set up a software RAID 0 in Disk Utility and then use this to clone the system to.

@@IAmZen_007 Having done a bit more research, Apple's guidance says this is not possible with the macOS Software RAID. I have also seen others who are documenting workarounds, but it looks like it may be tricky. Make sure you take backups if you try!

Constant Geekery I also saw different workarounds but I never had the idea it worked 100% (for Catalina). I found 1 movie but my Russian is not that good 😀. Backups are not necessarily, I put all my data on a NAS.

I’m a big fan of Dell Ultrasharp monitors. We have lots of them at my web studio in 27” and 25” sizes. I just got the 32” 4K version to use with the Mac Pro. They are good quality and colour accuracy is great out of the box.

I don't have any experience with this particular drive, so make sure you do your research on compatibility. As general advice, bear in mind that the 2013 Mac Pro is PCIe 2.0 x4, so you won't get anywhere near the published speeds. It will top out at around 1500MB/sec (which is plenty fast and a decent upgrade over the standard SSD), so I wouldn't spend more to get the best performing drive, as you won't see the benefit.

only true if you have a non-retina 'classic unibody' MBP. Retina MBPs 2013-15 and trashcans use the same connector.

Question, do you think it’s a good idea to buy a 2015 Macbook Pro with an OEM 1TB SSD? That way I could swap it with my 256GB Mac Pro SSD and give it to a family member or resell. My thoughts are getting a Macbook for under $500 versus SSD for $280-$350 and having a 256gb I can’t use
