Everyone is WRONG about the Studio Display from Apple! I've been using it for almost 1 month and I've discovered why people are getting so worked up over it. Let me explain..

In this review, I go through why the Apple Studio Display is more controversial than the new Mac Studio, and I explain why it costs $1600 and why it's actually worth it to quite a few different markets of people.
I then get into comparing it to the previous LG 5K Ultrafine display and why it's worth it in comparison.

I see all the "problems" of Mac Studio and Studio Display and I simply think that this is a very long term investment in term of design. The Mac Studio have so extra powerful heat system because in the future will be able to mount much powerful CPU. The Display also open to Apple many way, like to use it like a giant digital paint system with the apple pencil or like an imac. Mybe because of this they spent so much time in the design projects that have no time to tune the vent speed or update and optimize the software to take the maximum power from M1Ultra. This design need to live upon unchanged at least for the next 10 years and must be able to be as much flexible possible.

You didn’t quite say why? You just said they did. Why? Because then they can justify price. Was it needed? Nope. As much as it’s great looking monitor for that price rightly many expected more - functional stand, not that short, good camera - not this 2010 quality, HDR support - bare minimum. And maybe even mini led even if it would mean to cost bit more - something that would say this is top monitor you can get today not having to think but there are better ones out there for similar money spec wise.

The resale value of this monitor is questionable. Yes many Apple products keep their resale value very well but in this particular case, there is a good chance that 8K, 5K at 120hz, miniled, oled monitors are coming soon, when these new tech becomes popular, it won't be easy to resell this monitor. Less than 0.1% of monitor users can justify buying this monitor. The rest will be fine if not better with a larger screen and cheaper monitor. Only those that are Mac fans might buy this monitor, it is really bias opinion.

when people compare the teardown of iMac 24 with studio display, they miss one crucial fact, studio display has power supply built-in while iMac has external brick, so studio display no doubt would look packed with more components

Hi, Max Tech. I have a 55" OLD LG tv with 4 ports for gaming. I recently purchased the iMac 8gig with 512gigs of SSD storage. The display looks amazing. When I do compare displays from the OLED tv to my iMac the OLED tv does look much better separating blacks from light affects. Does the Studio display do much better then the iMac 24" display? Thanks.

I wasn’t a fan of the Studio Display at first like many, but after seeing the design and how sharp and bright the display actually is in the store in person I was amazed. I hadnt seen a 5K Display before and use a LG C1 48 as my monitor, But wow the sharpness of that resolution just makes everything look soooo good. The colours really do pop and it’s extremely bright. Definitely a must buy if you have a Mac as your daily. I also saw the Pro Display XDR and that thing is even crazier with its narrow bezels and great contrast ratio. But at $5K its just unattainable.

My studio display start flickering, i went to the apple genius bar they thnik it might just need to update the new fireware , but there is something wrong with the display 15.4 firmware, get an error during the update,they tried several times with different Mac, none of them getting through. so the staff told me they can’t do anything, my option is either wait for the newer update or return the display, they dont have any studio display in stock!I feel so frustrating. Is there anyone has the same issues?

Not a professional here. Got this display simply because I got tired of every single display having issues, from wake to edge bleed, didn't matter how expensive they were. I wish it was a mini led, but the blacks are really black on this one. Not oled black, well close to it. I don't even need the build-in speakers since I have really high end stand alone ones. Sure it's $1,600 and i'm fine with that when something "just works".

Just asking, what's the point of editing on a display, that the end result will look totaly different on 95% of other displays? Rather editing on the best of, the 95% displays, so the editing and colour grading was done to correct the "bad" visual representation as you wish in post process, so itt will look clooser on the 95% of displays, compared to what you see on the display. Any thoughts?

Because as an artist or editor or book publisher, it’s your job to design based around “perfect conditions”. You always use another series of ordinary devices to allow you to be sure that ordinary people have a similar experience to your ideal conditions, but you don’t devote your hours or months or years of creating something to intentionally make it inferior. Same with music production. Producers will listen to the final mix in their car to test what it sounds like on cheap car speakers. And filmmakers are aware their audience will watch on phones and laptops and TVs, but they still master it and film it to be displayed at a theater. You always make the best art you can, and people who also have that equipment will recognize that. And that high original quality allows even the versions people view on inferior equipment still look better than it would had they used lesser devices.

I feel like anyone who has work that involved them staring at their computer screens for hours on end. Needs a retina quality display to look at to save their eyes. Also the display 100% feels like a retooled 27”iMac. I have a feeling they intended for it to release with M1 Max and M1 ultra but we’re too thermally constrained in this chassis with the M1 ultra and didn’t want to just release the iMac with M1 max as it would’ve seemed like a downgrade in some areas to the discontinued iMac before it.

It wouldn't, the M1 Max is faster than the previous iMac in every way. iMac Pro was discontinued long before the iMac. I think there will be an iMac with MX Pro & Max options coming at some point in the future, and then maybe a bigger 32" iMac with MX Ultra only, called iMac Ultra or something.

I am so confused. Got the display yesterday. Was very excited but am now quite disappointed. Looked forward to Netflix etc in 4K and 'EDR' but I find the image grainy, the contrast too strong (blacks lack all detail) and the tone way too yellow. It's hooked up to my Intel MacBook Pro 2020 and that, on its own, gives a better image; it's sharper, the colour is cooler and more normal and HDR looks more natural. Even the darks show some detail. Studio display is just set to its default settings. How is this possible?

If you’re willing to pony up for an adjustable height stand, it might be good to wait until after WWDC. Ross Young’s still predicting another 27” mini-LED monitor to come out around then. It looks like delivery dates are over a month out anyway, so it isn’t that much of a longer wait to see if Young’s prediction holds. If he’s right, I don’t think that 27” will be the Pro Display XDR replacement since that one will be 7K resolution at potentially 36”. His predicted monitor would sit between the Studio Display and the old and new Pro Display XDR. I’m betting on Apple at least introducing the Mac Pro at WWDC even if it’s not released and will introduce the monitors at the same time. Cross our fingers Young could be right.

The 24in iMac (4.5K), 27in iMac 5K/iMac Pro/Studio Display (5K), and 32in Pro Display XDR (6K) each have 218ppi. The defunct 21in iMac 4K has 219ppi. The real deal-breaker for me is the hard-wired power cable. I mean, why? Just, why? I'd want to mount it on an Ergotron arm, and that sort of nonsense just makes it too difficult, especially how the hole in my desk for cables to go through is too small for a British 3 pin plug to go through. Having to pick a stand vs a VESA mount is pretty annoying but I could let that slide. The price is steep but I'd pay it for a monitor made of aluminium instead of plastic. But there's no good reason not to have a detachable power cable.
@techinrl9869
@techinrl9869 2 жыл бұрын
It is a proprietary cable because the monitor is too thin to use standard power cables. Apple made it difficult to remove because they don’t want you to lose it. If you lose the power cable, your monitor is a brick. There are no replacement parts available for sale. I actually appreciate that because I have a large drawer full of old cables and power cords, for which I have no idea where they came from or what device they were attached to. Just think if you separate your monitor and cable and stow it or move to another home and find out your power cable is missing. You’re SOL. Apple knows it’s a one-of-a-kind cable, so they’re making it hard to lose.

I suppose its like buying a cashmere jumper vs a wool one. You either value the difference or you dont. They essentially look the same but one costs quite a bit more. Its up to you really. At least by not tying the monitor to the computer you now have a choice. I suppose the sad thing is really that it showed how much value the 27 inch iMac really was. Thats the real big loss here. Feels like we had a great deal before.

I after 9 years of using my 27 inch iMac, I was very disappointed that the replacent would cost me over 4000 dollars for the Studio Display and Mac Studio. So instead I purchased a refurbished 2020 iMac 27" with 1TB of SSD for 30 dollars cheaper than the Studio Display. This gave me a full computer and keyboard and mouse and it does everything I need it to do. If I can get 4 years out of this, I will have my moneys worth.

@@PeterbFree I would argue there is no comparison and the pro iMac was inherently wasteful and limited thermally. Beautiful machines, but a terrible idea. The display ultimately must be abandoned when the computer is upgraded, and because target display mode is not possible on the 5k display, it means you junk a 5k display AND a computer when you upgrade, which is ridiculous because Apple displays last for decades. So although it costs more upfront? You get a significantly more powerful machine, and an ice cold thermal profile because of the case being separated from the screen, AND you can keep your display and use the same 5k for multiple devices from iPad to MacBook to Studio to mini, so you can cater the experience to your exact needs and budget. So really people are always blaming Apple for a lack of choice? But this is actually a large variety of options to get a premium experience at every tier of Apple devices. You can get a more powerful machine than an iMac pro, keep your display when you upgrade, and you are not limited by any failure to an all in one destroying your entire workstation. It does make sense but obviously you will be buying multiple devices and that is inherently more expensive than an all in one. It’s a trade off. But if you have the requirements of a more powerful machine, then it actually makes sense to separate the computer and display. People who have a less aggressive use case and upgrade path are perfectly fine buying a lower end iMac and keeping it until it dies, but people who need more powerful machines traditionally upgrade more regularly, so it makes sense to be able to upgrade just the computer at will.

I’d pay an additional $1k if it was 120 Hz and mini LED. Heck, the studio display doesn’t even have basic local dimming you can find on many 4K monitors. My LG monitor with a disgusting matte finish has inkier blacks than the studio display. Apple is just selling old tech at this point. The only thing I thought was nice on the display were the built in speakers.

Brightness means very little when you should be calibrating to a target brightness dependent on the room the monitor is in. It’s useful when mastering HDR content, but this isn’t even bright enough to properly do so (HDR1000). Also no talk about if it can sustain 600nit and the % of the area of the panel it can do so. These are very important things that needs to be discussed and tested if you’re going to call this a “studio” monitor and make any time of comparison.

Isn't another problem that the LG originally costs about 1k and was bumped up to 1,3k? That is also up to Apple to gain more profit and yes, we always schon criticize it when a couple just bumps the price up about 30% without giving you more. So both are basically overprized for what they do and should be 30% less of costs. Wish you would compare it to Screens like the AOC PD Agon Pro PD32M in terms of display quality, because with the stand you are about the same price, but this one got 144Hz and "Mini-LED", so well, that is what we would love to see from Apple but what we only get for 2k more. No professionell is asking for better speaker from a screen or a camera without face ID (which would have fit into the chassi). Sometimes it sounds like "buyers stockholm syndrom" how you justify all the bads about Apple products. With Mini-Led,1000 to 1600 nits, 144hz, HDMI 2.1 on the back, plus a cam with Face-ID, well it would be even worth 2,5k with stand and everyone would just buy it without hesitation. It has it pros, but because the original LG was overpriced this one is definitely overpriced too. And it is just for Apple to gain more money out of old tweaked panels. They milk the cow(Apple buyers) and enough are just to blind to see it, and if you see al the profits Apple makes, well, money isn't the issue, its greed, they are not even close to suffer, even 1--5 billion would be enough to save R&D for them easily, because in the earning are already all the costs for devopelemtn and research, never forget that, everything else is already on top. It is the first big flawed product in years but it is what it is.

Apple Studio Display would be a good choice if one has to stick to 5K display. Otherwise there are lots of good quality, high value 4K displays at fraction of the price of a Apple Studio Display. But can someone also explain to us the necessity to go 5K display in a studio. Is there are a big difference in work quality and productivity between using a 5K and a 4K display for professional work such as web design, graphic design, game development, music composing? I think professional photographers doing hi-resolution photo retouching work will be the user group for the 5K display.
@johnbuscher
@johnbuscher 2 жыл бұрын
I assume the big difference is if you can actually use multiple 5K displays, the extra screen real-estate offered by a higher resolution is nice. Text will be sharper, you can fit more options/controls on screen at once (though they’ll be “smaller” than if you were at 4K at the same size display). It’s the same idea as going from 1080p to 1440p. Many people notice the difference immediately for text clarity or extra space for more applications. That said, I would still recommend cheaper 4K panels over this thing. Non-removable power cable on a $1600 monitor means it deserves to fail commercially.

The build and design of this display is a combination of chip shortage issues and Apple wanted to test an iOS based display. I feel that Apple are not so committed to industry standards that take forever to go mainstream. HDMI... DP... etc So they will make their own displays for their own hardware that support ANY feature they want and wish to have... They will still use "standard" ports like TB3 or TB4... but it will have its own Apple proprietary connectivity that goes beyond HDMI and DP standards.

You still missed the true 10 bit display. 10 bits per pixel for 1024 shades instead of 256, so 1.07 billion colors. The LG UltraFine and the Apple iMac were only 8 bit panels. The LG could take a 10 bit input but uses FRC which some people are sensitive to. This could avoid the headaches that FRC could impose. Not to mention offer smoother color and better color grading of videos.

The video is precisely correct. The Studio Display is for a specific market, one who needs every detail refined. From that aspect it is a solid choice. For everyone else it is not a good choice and it is not intended for you. Most of the world who buys Apple computers is buying an M1 MBA or Mac mini. Unless you have money to burn, you have solid 4k choices for 500$. I think Apple made an error. in not providing just a few features that can take advantage of the A13 and 64Gb of disk space. Not a full feature computer -- that would add even more cost -- but add a Wifi antenna, add the ability for native Airplay, stream only Apple Music, FaceTime. This would have little cost and made it functional when the MacBook isn't plugged into it.
