I just upgraded from a Thunderbolt Display to the Studio Display and it's pretty much exactly what I thought it would be. The TB display also had a lot of the same features you mentioned (lack of power button, limited to one input), so these didn't really catch me off guard. The way i've handled this for years is that when I want to leave my Mac on but away with the screen off, I just turn on the screen saver by putting my mouse pointer in the bottom left corner of the display. After a minute or two (depending on what I have the settings on), the display will turn off automatically while the Mac keeps running. I 100% agree about the stand. The TB display had a tilt only stand, but it also sits a little higher (19.35" vs 18.8"). Since I already knew that my TB display was at times a little low, I opted for the tilt and height adjustable stand instead. While it's definitely not cheap, I do think that it was the right call for a display that I'll probably be using 5-10 years or more from now. My only other nitpick about this display is that it only has the three downstream USB-C ports in it. The TB display had 1-gig ethernet, a FireWire 800 port and a downstream TB2 port that you could daisy chain another TB display to if you had a Mac that could support it. Since I use my display as a docking station for my personal and work MacBook Pros, I like to have my keyboard, mouse and network all wired to the display at all times. I ended up having to buy a small Anker USB-C hub with built in Ethernet so that I could maintain the single connection to the computer.
@kylemeshna2 жыл бұрын
That does seem like a good solution. I guess some of the thought process is that the new Mac machines (MacBook pros and Mac studio) have a lot of the inputs you’d want built in, so there’s less need for those inputs on the display itself, but still would be nice to have more functionality there

I looked at several options and decided for the BenQ PD3220U. Admittedly It may not be a one to one match but it ticks all my boxes with an impressive thunderbolt (usb c ) hub that allows me to connect more than one Mac at a time (Mac mini through display port), powers my mac book pro max through one supplied thunderbolt cable for somewhere around $600 less that the apple studio. Btw will raise and tilt on the provided stand and can even go portrait. Perfect for me. Thanks for your very honest review 😎

Quick tip on the power button, you can go to system preferences on your Mac and go to Desktop and Screensaver, then navigate to the screen saver tab, then hit “hot corners” at the bottom and create a shortcut to turn the display off by dragging your cursor to a corner on the screen. You can also hit a control key (like option, command, etc.) while setting the shortcut so that your display doesn’t turn off every time you find your cursor in that corner, but only when your cursor is in that corner and the set control key is held down. Let me know if this helps. Edit: about the audio playback destination, you can set up aggregate audio devices using the built-in MDI audio app in MacOS, which allows you to combine multiple audio outputs into one.

I still don’t understand how this display is overpriced. Is it expensive? Yes. But can someone tell me another alternative to a 5K, color calibrated P3, at 600 nits or higher, that has spatial audio sound system and literally a CPU controller, that’s cheaper? I don’t want to hear about 4K display. Once you see 5K, you can’t go back to 4K. Also, I keep hearing people expected mini led tech or local dimming tech in this display. They wanted the tech that’s in the MacBook pro’s at 27”. Apple would have to charge $3,000 for those features. There’s no way to charge $1,600 for that level of tech, of which I only see Apple doing (if there’s another company doing it for cheaper, then I stand corrected).
@MockManor2 жыл бұрын
@UCHeDe2e9Es7VkhWhpse802Q ok cool. What should the price be for the Apple Studio Display? $1,300? When it’s been repackaged from the ground up better than LG’s package? Or $1,000….a price point that would lose Apple money (why re-enter the display game then, what’s the benefit?). Regarding MacBook Pro owners, you’re absolutely right….why buy a huge display that has less tech than the laptop display. The only choice for those owners is to buy the XDR Display. But wait, that starts at $5K, that’s too expensive….I wish Apple would come out with a display that’s more affordable that’s like the XDR…maybe a smaller version. There is now way you shrink the XDR to 27 inches and come in at a price point below $3K. And the prosumers don’t like a $3K display price point. Also, the display in the ASD is not the same as what’s in the iMac (100 nits brighter). The imac display is the same as the LG. I don’t even know of any 4K display that is over 500 nits, that costs $1,000 (correct me if I’m wrong). I’m seeing prices averaging $1,600….but again 4K. So if I need a display that’s not as expensive as the XDR, but is calibrated like the XDR minus the promotion, mini-led, local dimming….and is also 5K….What are my options? If it’s not a fair price, where are the competitors…how come they’re not seizing the opportunity to make a display with better tech specs than the ASD? They had at least 3 years to bring something to market. Also, why are people going crazy over the power cord? I admit it’s odd that Apple made that move, when they have MagSafe. But a power cord is not gonna stop me from getting my work done. And I have never in the history of my power computing, had issues with a power cord from a display. The $400 height stand is a crazy price, I admit that. But again, I’ll just get the VESA mount, at no extra cost. So I see no issue there either.
@cringefairy26872 жыл бұрын
Just because nobody else makes a 5K monitor doesn't make $1600 a good deal, lol. If you don't need 5K, then there's no reason to get this besides it being pretty. Speakers, webcam and a mobile chip (lol) don't matter on a monitor, they're just nice to haves. The things that do matter are refresh rate, HDR, and adjustability which are all lacking here. For a monitor, it's a bad deal plain and simple.

I hear you. It's a tough call for me too. I've been waiting ~2 years for an Apple Silicon 27" iMac. Now it's discontinued. However, I always sort of wanted the computer separate from the monitor, so they can be replaced independently. And a 5k monitor is ideal for the MacOs. But the combo Mac Studio and Studio Monitor is a fair bit more expensive than the base Intel iMac. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Another option I've been considering is the Dell UltraSharp 32" 4K USB-C Hub Monitor - U3223QE, which costs about $920. No web camera (albeit mediocre), no microphone, and no excellent speakers. Those are probably worth ~$200-$300. And if you're pairing it with a Mac Studio, they're arguably necessary. So the next question is how much are you willing to pay for better build quality and 5k? It might be worth going to an Apple store to see one in person, to get a feel for the size, screen quality, etc.?

@@ZaphodTube I came around to your line of thinking and ordered an Apple Studio Display after all. It's supposed to arrive in 4-6 weeks. FWIW I ordered it with a VESA mount, which won't look as good as the lovely aluminum stand. But it will hopefully be more versatile. The Mac Studio arrived a month ago, and has a really enjoyable upgrade from my old Hackintosh. The internal drives are lightning fast (5,000-6,000 Write/Read speeds). My only small regret is that I didn't pay $600 to upgrade from 2TB of drive storage to 4TB. That's an insane amount to pay, to be sure, but there's simply no way to replicate those speeds with an external drive. An nVME drive in a "40Gbps" case will run $350-$400 minimum, run dangerously hot, and deliver no more than 3100 MBs R/W, and more probably 1500-2000 MBs, and still be an external dongle.

Be prepared for a long wait. Historically we're looking at 3-5 years between refreshes of Apple displays. The next update will likely be a replacement of the Pro Display XDR, but expect $5000+ for that one. Unfortunately high quality 5K displays with that perfect, razor sharp retina scaling that Apple prefers are rare and expensive. Many don't realize the difference in screen pixels between 4K and 5K is more than 80%. But, if you're willing to sacrifice some detail and clarity there are tons of less expensive 4K alternatives on the market. The issue I've run into with most of them below $1000 is inconsistent quality control, poor color accuracy, clunky user interfaces, unreliable sleep/wake behavior, slow USB ports, terrible speakers which feel like an afterthought, many lacking a webcam and those that do having garbage microphones, milky blacks that shift as you move your head and most being pretty dim topping out at 300-400nits, nowhere close to the Studio Display's 600nits. They're all matte displays too which reduces some contrast and adds this slightly hazy layer of fuzziness to everything. I know the $1600 price tag is painful, but the Studio Display is a premium product and best in class for Mac.

You should be able make the audio come out of both by making a composite audio device in Mac OS settings. It would just sound like both playing normally though not a special surround sound thing or something.

Hey Kyle, got one and love it, except for the webcam and hopefully that future software update fixes it so I am still using my Logitech Brio webcam for now. I get the convenience, but it's not worth the money, not given the amount of excellent 4K monitors that are way cheaper and offer similar if not better colour accuracy. I'm not bothered about the speakers as I wear headphones and I use the webcam on my laptop. I, like you, need to connect two devices to my monitor and flip between them - laptop for work during the day, xbox on an evening. As nice as the Studio Display looks, it's too focused on being Mac-only device for my needs.

And then there is one feature that no one ever mentions: This thing has automatic pivot recognition. It rotates the image by 90° … and ALSO rotates the image of the webcam. No software, drivers, or user interaction required. No other display does that.

Liked and subd. I was sitting, money in hand for the anticipated iMac 27. Enter studio, enter apple display. Now sitting dumbfounded. I don’t want just a panel from the shabby casings like LG and the rest! I like and I want the studio display. So my gripe is not the price itself; up to $1600/- Above that is just being impossible. It’s just the hate list that I share with you. For now, changing lanes to get a Mini with a 4k display around a $1000/-for color specific work. And waiting for a year to hopefully find some sanity return to Apple. Not ready to give $1300/- for a panel surrounded by plasticky ugliness to those who sat greedy for all these years and did nothing towards design aesthetic.
@chuck74152 жыл бұрын
I am upset about the workarounds needed to add an Xbox. Also, for the price they should have made it so you can switch mounts. Cant remove the cord is dumb. Some very anti-consumer practices going on at Apple, but I still think it's a gorgeous display and hope that the pros outweigh the cons once I've had a chance to use it. Otherwise I might go with a Samsung gaming monitor and calibrate it myself.
@Smack0r2 жыл бұрын
There's really only one option to buy the studio display: With a Vesa mount. Buy one with an aluminum and white look, and you're good to go. Best option.
@m.simmons71492 жыл бұрын
I'm torn. I'll probably order the Studio Display, but not sure whether to go with the elegant but not height-adjustable stand, or go with an ugly but very adjustable VESA mount. For a company that prides itself on design aesthetics, the VESA mount looks like it was bolted on as an afterthought. And it obscures the Apple logo. Shame that Apple didn't bother to find a more elegant configuration. I've seen a few white and aluminum arms that are probably passable. But nothing that would match the display well. Shame.

Does anyone else notice how almost painfully bright when switched to P3 photography colour profile? It is really intense, and brightness is locked. If you do web browsing, while editing, it is hard on the eyes. Not sure what to make of this to be honest.

Nice video. For the most accurate display, if you're a professional HDR isn't a good benchmark. Pros turn down brightness instead, there's no 650 knits of brightness anywhere near a photo studio. Most of those guys use EIZO displays that looks really dull compared to the hip latest consumer ones. It's like when you get to an audio dealer, listening for a pair of good audiophile speakers. The dealer turns up the bass and volume on the expensive pair and it all sounds so much better. Well, that's how the human ear works. The human taste agrees to food that has more sugar and fat in it, as a survival instinct, therefore Burger King, and the eyes really like scorching colors. That's just the way the world works...

Cancelled my order for a studio display after Apple pushed the date out a month to June. There are plenty of 4K monitors available for the job at a lower price and with better ergonomics. Also not having Adobe RGB is a disadvantage for the photographer who prints. P3 is fine if you just publish to the web or send your work to printers that deal with lower gamutsRGB. Apple doesn’t want you to calibrate their displays.

They should've made height adjustable stand to be a basic option. It should've also been detachable with VESA mount. Needless to say making power cord fixed is stupid. Almost as stupid as making power supply integrated instead of making it like on their own product - the iMac, where it's external with mag safe connector. They dropped the bomb with this one. Not only it's inferior specs wise to any other monitor within same price range, it's full of stupid design choices. But not like Mac users have much choice anyway. Because only a handful of monitors are actually Mac compatible because of PPI and scaling debacle. You know, the one that makes any monitor with PPI other than 109/218 being incompatible?
