Apple’s just launched a new $1600 Studio Display that’s pretty much exactly what a very specific, very fussy segment of the Mac market has been asking for… going on 6 years now: A Cinema Display. A Thunderbolt Display. Whatever you want to call it… Just take the 27-inch 5K iMac and… delete the Mac part, or the LG 5K UltraFine and delete the LG part… slap it in an Apple enclosure. Seriously. Anything… anything that isn’t 6K for 6K!
And Apple’s gone and done it. Finally. But at the same time, somehow upset a very loud, very vocal handful of tech-heads who not only never wanted it, but don’t understand why the people who do want it… do want it. So let me explain. No no, there is too much. Let me sum up.

The issue is the price. What did an entry level iMac cost a few weeks ago? This is that product, redesigned and significantly downgraded, for how much? Apple gear is great, this display is great, but this price, by Apple’s own standards, is just wrong

I am getting one. Hopefully arriving this week. The price is a bit mad when you compare with that of the low-end Intel 5K iMacs, but relative to the Ultrafine 5K, it's easily $300 better than that (and here in Europe it's wholly discontinued anyway, so it's not an option). But it's what I've always wanted, and no-one else is making anything like it, so I kinda have to get one now. 😀 Pixel density is everything. Wish Dell was making one... (I'd actually really have liked standalone versions of the 4.5K screen in 24" iMacs. I might have got two of those. But I reckon if that was coming at all it would have been announced at the same time, and we'd be talking now about the Studio Display 24 and Studio Display 27.)

I'm not getting one, the price / performance just isn't there. This is a 'STUDIO' display and therefore meant for professionals and it doesn't meet many professional requirements. The advances in display tech including; 10 bit colour depth, colour consistency, HDR, local dimming, higher refresh rates etc.... all add up to make real benefits for a professional user, just comparing it to a MacBook pro xdr pro-motion display shows this only too well, especially when your looking at a display 8+ hours a day, every day! No, What this is, is a really really nice home monitor for non-professionals and I'm sure apple knows this. Why have centerstage on a business monitor! The last thing you want in a business environment is the camera panning around an office showing things it shouldn't, you need that cam fixed on you and only you! I'd love you to do a large comparison of displays with 4K USB-C monitors, the likes of BenQ, Dell, Huawei, and many others, to see if there is an up to date option at the same or lower cost than the Apple studio display (enough of the 5K LG UltraFine comparisons) which is basically the same monitor.

I remember gasping when I purchased the cinema screen 11 years ago but it has been perfect for all that time and powers my MBA. It was $1000 back then and the new Studio is no more expensive in constant value dollars. With my major refresh I am sticking with Apple Studio. It has no compromises with everything built in, 5k for Mac OS and beautiful engineering. It will be great for the next 10 years.

I completely understand the 5k being 2x 1440p struggle. However, I just don't find that slightly better scaling to be worth an extra $600-$1000. With that said, Apple knows plenty of people will pay it, so it is what it is. Definitely disappointed, but I just can't justify $1600 for what you're getting. The fact that height adjustment alone is $400 just bonkers to me.

With the standard tilt-adjustable stand, how high is the bottom edge of the active display pixels? My 27" displays must line up across my desk! Price is unjustified. The centerstge is pointless for a display that is going to sit static on a desk. Not sure what the point of having a A13 Bionic inside is (probably defective chips re being used here). Also, these studio displays cannot be daisy chained. You have to connect each individual display to each individual port on the Mac/MacBook. At this price, there are much much much better displays on the market. Extra 400 just for a stand to be able to tilt?? Unless someone is a die hard fan that only fancies Apple products, not sure how someone can justify buying this.

Excellent review. I think you hit it on the head that Apple is prioritizing the Centerstage functionality over a sharper - but static - webcam. I’m not sure that was the best play on a non-portable device, tho. I love Centerstage on my iPad Pro because I can set it anywhere and the camera just centers on me. But a big 27" display? It is just always going to be planted directly in front of my chair. Who is using a Studio Display while cooking dinner or working in the garage?
@incredibilistic
@incredibilistic 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I could see the M1 iMac having Center Stage but the Studio Display seems to be more for pro environments, who are people that are less likely to want or even care about such a feature since they'll more than likely be working solo anyway. To borrow a phrase from Brian Tong, it's a "bad apple" when Apple's charging $1,600 for a display with a "meh" web cam. That said, if the web cam was pixel and picture perfect and the adjustable stand wasn't a $400 premium, few if any would have an issue. In a perfect world the Studio Display would be $999 with a $400 stand option that has both height adjustment and rotation. Or charge $1,599 with all of that and $999 for a VESA-only option. I don't often scoff at Apple's pricing schema because I believe in the value they bring over competitive products and while I have every intention of buying the Studio Display and a Mac Studio I'm not thrilled about the Studio Display's price. I feel like this is one product Apple could've priced lower and still made a killing on.

There is a big issue with the display that reviews have not yet addressed. No its not the unacceptably horrendous webcam. The issue is that the monitor runs its own operating system (IOS) to manage the camera, microphone and speakers. Like any device running a consumer based operating system, it can't be run indefinitely without restarting it or you run into issues. If you don't restart your iPad or iPhone for weeks or months you will eventually experience all kind of issues. I got my studio display on March 18. yesterday my camera started acting up, then the microphone and speakers would stop working sporadically. After hours with Apple support it was determined the monitor needs to restart. BUT there is no way to do it, it has no power button and no way to actuality shut it down or reboot/restart properly. So the only way to do restart the display is to unplug it from the power source for a minute and plug it back in. We did so and its working fine again. However, doing it that way means you are crashing the build-in OS rather than properly restarting it. That of course can potentially damage the display just like crashing your computer every time you want to restart it.

I think the monitor will handle being disconnected from power. There are a lot of electronic devices where, when they experience problems, it’s advised to disconnect them for seconds to minutes and plug them back in. What you’re describing doesn’t seem concerning to me.

I am super on the fence on this. I did order the Studio Display two weeks ago and it is supposed to ship soon. While I have been waiting, I have been checking out reviews and alternatives. On specs, there seems like there are so many "good enough" options (LG, Dell, etc). I did go out and have a look at those and in-person with my own eyes it is clear that there is a huge difference in monitors. Not that the alternatives are bad, but they are not that good. Plastic bodies and displays that are "okay". While cheaper, a close to $1000 display with not great graphics is disappointing. The Studio Display costs more, but it is a far superior product. I have and love the display on the new MacBook Pro (it is stunning!) so my eyes are used to really good displays. Hypothetically, if Apple did release an LED, blah, blah, blah (closer to the MacBook Pro display, but in 27 or 32 inches) I don't think I could justify the price. While there is a lot to knock, I think this display is going to be a perfect compliment to my workflow for music, photography and video production.

On Friday, I visited my local Apple Store and had "eyes on" time with the Studio Display. Because they were out of stock, I could not take one home with me at that time. But when I returned home, I did go online and placed an order for the $1600 model. It should arrive around April 11th. Would I have enjoyed Pro Motion capability? Absolutely. (Personally, I value Pro Motion capability above HDR capability on the desirability scale - especially on a display with a sustained 600 nit brightness level rating.) Still, I mainly deal in photography and image editing and processing so 60 Hz is perfectly acceptable to me in a display. What I do insist on is clarity, sharpness and color accuracy characteristics in a display and the Studio Display has those qualities in "spades".

The truth that is not being said here is that consumers asked for that half a decade ago… the monitor improvements to the 5K mac are the lowest bar Apple has probably ever strived to reach. No one is asking for older technology, I promise. The justification that Apple nerds will buy this because they don’t want to own outside of Apple is also a lazy excuse, I’m sure Apple is expecting this monitor to sell to mainstream, treat it as such compared to the rest of the competition. Some new (not new monitor related) features were added… that’s fine. One is a hit (speakers), one is a miss (webcam) and one is cool to have but also why, in the grand scheme? (A13 processor). $1,599… an insane price for a bare minimum monitor revisit, with a few sprinkles of side tech. It’s sad to even anticipate the mini LEDs market price if this is Apple’s low tier monitor. A side note: Trying to make consumers happy about their purchase, rather than lean into a product’s shortcomings at Apple’s price points, doesn’t really help technology get pushed forward. Also, trying to convey that no matter the tech inside, you’re always going to want something better anyway, is another quick dismissal at an otherwise opportune moment to judge a product off it’s real value compared to what’s being advertised and sold to hard earning consumers. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@ReneRitchie
@ReneRitchie 2 жыл бұрын
Nothing has changed in 6 years though. There haven't been any monitor improvements that would meaningful for this spec at this price. You still can't transit high frame rate over Thunderbolt 4, and at 600 nits, you're getting better HDR than many so-called HDR panels, and to get better you'd need OLED or Mini-LED which no one has marketed at 5K yet... so?
@winky225
@winky225 2 жыл бұрын
@@ReneRitchie respectfully, those are all constraints that I understand and do not know how to solve. Apple chose to not solve those issues here either. So if they can’t because “current capabilities” then that’s fine but should charging $300 more for 2/3s of better features along with 600 nits be the answer? Also, I can’t stress enough how the quality of that webcam, as it stands, can be included in the conversation of “look, they added more than just screen” to justify the price. My larger question to this product is why does it exist if a better version from Apple is on the way soonish (according to rumors), and at this price point? It’s overpriced. The sad thing is that consumers will look at the Studio Display as a bargain when they see the “Studio Display Pro” and what it costs, bringing in the real features everyone (including Apple nerds) wants today not 5 years ago. Which when looking at it from a sobering point of view, explains why the Studio Display exists. Just to see how far they can push it when keeping those prices high, and creating new product categories. It’s not solely because “Apple wants to use premium parts and features” to justify their prices in this case, isn’t it? 😕

I'd agree that the color calibration and sort of industry standard apple has established makes a difference. Not only does anyting I share on line look the same as I saw it on any other Apple device, but if I send a digital file to be printed at a professional photo printing shop, it is effortless. I just tell them 'm using whatever specific Apple display at factory calibration, and I get back a print on paper that color matches exeactly what I saw on my screen. That is a huge advantage.

I live too far from an Apple Store, and I'm really cautious and cheap about buying new equipment when I don't really need it. But my eyes are getting older plus my posture is getting worse by peering too closely at my small Air screen (which makes me look ridiculous on Zoom). I ordered one from an Apple store, drove almost 2 hrs, and as I was waiting for my boxed monitor looked at the display model. Sold! (even though I already bought one). Christmas in March when I got home. Had to update to latest OS to get camera features to work, and I have to say the results that appear when viewing the Zoom video options look very nice. Excited to get the monitor to the office and work today. Can't keep it in the house, otherwise I'd be here all day, every day. Beautiful screen at any resolution, full brightness is actually too bright, colors rich, speakers wonderful, and video currently more than adequate for zoom. Not disappointed at all, and the cost is worth it for me and my older eyes.

*Most professional film makers who are working in the day to day commercial, cable TV Network, and industrial/freelance sector don't work in an HDR workflow. HDR is still pretty much considered to be a (specialty) delivery - special order type of production. The majority of work is still acquired and delivered in a Rec.709 image workspace. Even at best, HLG is the prefered route, since it can be derived from Rec. 709 sources and re-processed by shooting in a special Rec.709 Log. This is why it's called (Hybrid) (Log) Gamma. You acquire in a standard Rec. 709 and produce and deliver a compatible delivery which behaves almost identically to an HDR Gamma Curve. The BBC in England do a bit of HLG since doing so looks great on traditional rec.709 and HDR screens alike 👌What pro editors and colorists look for in a professional quality monitor is (Color Precision), (10 Bit Color Depth), and (High Screen Rosolution of 6K). Soon, with the advent of 8K Broadcast TV, accurate 8K resolution monitors will become essential. 8 Bit color depth screens, simply cannot provide the color reproduction depth and accuracy commercial print and cinema movie colorists must have in order to do their jobs properly.*

I miss the days of Apple having among the best color accuracy and sharpness, but admittedly at a premium price. With the exception of the pro display XDR, that hasn’t been true since 10-bit color became a thing. I’m not sure how I feel about this display in some sense providing a P3 wide color gamut but not actually being 10-bit. I’ve always thought that I needed a 10-bit panel to get good color representation for print production, and I /certainly/ can tell the difference between 8-bit and 6-bit with FRC. But if this can authentically display P3, does it matter how it’s doing it?
