IMO this would’ve been an impressive release seven years ago. Honestly just seems like they’re trying to dump overstock of old, unloved parts that are laying around in 5k iMac panels and old iPhone chips. It’s a downgrade in many ways apart from the panel itself, and it’s actually not as hard as you might think to upgrade the Thunderbolt Display with a 5k iMac panel. Hell for the price you could just get a 5k iMac and get a bonus computer with your display purchase
@dmitry.clarke Жыл бұрын
How much does a 5k iMac panel go for? Is it really the same size as the Thunderbolt Display?
@jackconrad4814 Жыл бұрын
@@dmitry.clarke 2-300$ depending on sourcing, and they're close enough that a decent number of people have posted build guides for them online in quite a few places. That's not the only cost associated of course, and it's not something I'd recommend to someone who isn't tech savvy, but it's certainly doable, and definitely for far less than they're charging for the studio. Many designs even preserve the microphone, speakers, USBs and such. The only non-salvageable bit is the original charger, which typically goes unused since magsafe 1 has been deprecated for a great many years now.

If you plan to build a dual monitor setup with old Thunderbolt displays, you should take into account that the devices almost all have different brightness levels due to their age. Over the last few years I've had about 7 Thunderbolt displays and the brightness has been between 3,900 (almost yellow image) and 5,900 (pretty good white) lux. Apparently the displays burn out over the years depending on how heavily they're used. I measured 6,500 lux during the iMac 5K DIY monitor conversion.

So I agree with the second Thunderbolt port! The thing is, the Studio Display can't because the 5K resolution. Thunderbolt 3/4 supports up to 40Gb/s of data, though that is per controller, not per port. A 5 display uses 22Gb/s of data to run the display. Assuming there is a full 40Gb/s of bandwidth available, which is already unlikely, that isn't enough for the 44Gb/s of data required for two 5K displays. Not to mention the added data requirements from the onboard ports. The Thunderbolt Display's 1440p resolution has more wiggle room on the older version of Thunderbolt.

@@AppleInsider thank you for the explanation. I do understand the bandwidth limitations. However it feels a bit lazy from a company that literally invented a custom controller for the 5K display, especially when you compare it to the new iMac 24. Maybe that should have thrown an M1 Pro/Max chip in it like everything else nowadays 😂 oh wait that’s the iMac we all wanted!

@@AppleInsider Wie Thunderbolt 5 coming in December 2023 and supported 80 GB/s Daisy Chaining would be possibile again. So maybe Apple will do a refresh in 2024- or what do you think?

Hey Apple insider - I have been using a thunderbolt display with my M! mac mini while waiting for the apple studio to get here - It arrived yesterday - how do i connect both monitors to my M1 Mac mini - i have had no luck connecting them both to the thunderbolt plugs on the back of the mac mini - the mac mini reads only one of those ports - so I am either watching my apple on the studio or the thunderbolt - what am I doing wrong? HELP!! thanks john P.

I think the M1 Minis only support one thunderbolt monitor, and one hdmi. Unfortunately you won’t be able to use both your monitors because neither has hdmi. The Mac Studio supports up to 4 thunderbolt monitors, but it’s much more expensive than a Mini.

Why your connector of the Thunderbolt cable looks shorter than other reviewers’

Why would you mislead people and say not to buy it? It’s an absolute steal for everyday use. I bought one a year back and I think it’s best value for money investment.

Still, the old Cinema and Thunderbolt Displays had a detachable power cable and stand. Go figure…
@AppleInsider2 жыл бұрын
Still detachable on the new one, just not by your everyday person. Can still be replaced.

Yeah I bought one for 150 pounds. It’s an excellent monitor for the price. Better than other monitors at that price point

Thunderbolt is 27" 1440P which is 108 PPI. Macs work much better with 110 or 220 (retina) ppi. So 3 best options are 1440p 27" , 34" 3440x1440p, and 5k 27". Unless money is no object, there is little to no reason to upgrade to a $1,600 studio in 2023. And picking up a Thunderbolt off facebook in 2023 for $100-$200 is great option vs $200 monitor for productivity use (non gamers).

Obviously better and a great display, but the price of that studio display is OUTRAGEOUS imo
