My current setup is a 2013 trash can Mac Pro with 1 LED Cinema Display and 1 Thunderbolt Display. I still see myself on the trash can for a year or two, but I'll eventually replace it with a new Mac Mini. I'll be re-using these two displays on the new system when I do, though! I don't need super crazy resolution for what I do (audio editing and Vectorworks); these displays look great and all the extra ports come in handy. Is the new Studio Display better? Of course. But unless you're deep into serious video or graphics production, it's definitely not worth the hefty price tag. Nice video!

I recently bought a used Thunderbolt Display over the new Studio Display because of the nice APPLE logo on the bottom bezel ;-?) Not really of course, it was all about cost. For what I paid I could buy 8 of these TBDs for the price of 1 Studio Display. Positives; still that beautiful solid APPLE design and OS compatibility, the ports, surprised how good it looks for photography and videos, and sound is also surprisingly good. Yes, it was a compromise, the SD is better is every way. But, this will be fine as a practical and usable option. For what is does and the price difference, I’m happy.

Here's my "funny" Apple display story (that fits nicely with this video) I bought the 24" (yes, I said 24" Apple Cinema Display in October 2009 for $999 (I almost choked it was so expensive...I paired it with my 2009 $1799 first generation Macbook Air laptop)......in summer of 2012 (almost 3 years later...but just three months before my AppleCare warrenty expired) the 24" Cinema Display "crapped out" on me. I took it into my local Apple Store in July 2012. I learned that day that the 24" Apple Cinema Display had been replaced by a 27" Apple Cinema Display in 2011.....in summer of 2012 apple just began selling the 27" Apple THUNDERBOLT display.....The apple store still had a brand new in the box 27" Cinema Display....so guess what they did....they swapped my "crapped out" almost 3-year old 24" Cinema and GAVE ME FOR NO COST the brand new 27" Apple Cinema Display. That was July 2012....it is now late August 2024 (12 years later) and my 27" Apple Cinema Display is STILL GOING STRONG connected to my 2011 Mac Mini. Yes, 2011 Mac Mini. Are apple products expensive? Hell YES !!!! But they last foreever and as you illustrated in this video Taylor the "old" 27" Cinema Display sure looks pretty damn good even today in 2024 compared to a "state-of-the-art" $1600 (2022) Apple Studio Display. If you plan to build a dual monitor setup with old Thunderbolt displays, you should take into account that the devices almost all have different brightness levels due to their age. Over the last few years I've had about 7 Thunderbolt displays and the brightness has been between 3,900 (almost yellow image) and 5,900 (pretty good white) lux. Apparently the displays burn out over the years depending on how heavily they're used. I measured 6,500 lux during the iMac 5K DIY monitor conversion.

@MisterYeko2 жыл бұрын
Just a reminder if you‘re using the LED Cinema Display as a secondary monitor with newer iMac and also for the Mac Mini (mostly the newer ones with the TB3 and TB4 input) it also counts with MacBooks. It doesn‘t work using the TB3 to TB2 adapter while the Mini DisplayPort needs power delivery. Which could be the reason that the Mini Displayport to USB C aren‘t powerful enough in order to show the display. So to getting working the display. You need a Dockingstation. That the LED Cinema Display can show the screen thru the dock. However they are not cheap, it costing like 130 to 400 bucks. Depending on the qualities and brands. It‘s somewhat pricey to get the Dockingstation. Some few Dockingstation has a Mini Displayport input or if it doesn’t, you could technically use a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort Adapter if the Dockingstation has only the Standard DisplayPort. If you‘re using the Thunderbolt Display, you don‘t need a Dockingstation if you‘re straight up using a Thunderbolt adapter. But nice comparision btw. I could think the Mac Studio looks smooth to the resolution of the display. But i‘ll prefer the LED Cinema Display, because they aren‘t expensive and it‘s timelessly usable atleast. So i‘m happy to getting the 27 inch LED Cinema Display by using it.
@MisterYeko2 жыл бұрын
Update: you don‘t need actually a Dockingstation. You can actually use a HDMI to Displayport adapter (with the USB for power delievery) then plugging a Display to Mini Displayport adapter and then you have a working Cinema Display. Source kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHuXqYSrna1oh9E

It's true the OS will tell you it's 2560x1440 but it's scaling a 5k image to 2560x1440. It's not reducing pixel count, it's increasing UI sizing. 1:1 scaling of 5k on 27" you'd have to be really close to see anything as the whole UI would be tiny.
