Here's a tip to go along with what you were talking about with the Match Dynamic Range. So having it match the dynamic range and frame rate, as you showed are important. But you can add to it by going into the main TV resolution settings and changing the Apple TV to SDR. Even though you change it to SDR, because of the Match Dynamic Range setting, when playing something in HDR it will switch back. The benefit to this is to ensure that SDR is ALWAYS shown as SDR and that it never tries to tone-map the SDR to HDR. But even assuming the Match Dynamic Range setting truly does always keep the content in SDR when it's non-HDR, there's one place where it will NEVER change it: the Home Screen. The Home Screen will always try to show in HDR if HDR is selected. This has the result of making the Home Screen look a little washed out; not as bright or well defined. This may not be a big deal on TVs where the screen is extremely bright (like a QLED) - but it's really bad on a lower cost TV. Many TVs under $1,000 have panels that are not capable of truly reaching the minimum brightness needed for HDR (regardless of whether they show the HDR logo on the box and the input allows it). And so for TVs that can't go past 500 Nits of brightness, trying to browse through the Apple TV Home Screen in HDR mode can be very eye straining as it's so dim and washed out. But by changing the resolution setting to SDR, and then enabling Match Dynamic Range, the home screen will have full 4:4:4 color and look much brighter and easier to see.

Another tip to go along with the voice control you talked about. You can also use the exact same commands hands-free, if you have another nearby Apple device like an iPad or HomePod or Apple Watch. I use this all the time when I want to get up to go to the other room and I just call out to Siri to pause the TV. The HomePod is perfect for this because it's equipped with long range beam-forming microphones; and it works from any HomePod in the house regardless of whether it's paired to the Apple TV for sound output or not. Some of the things you can say is: Hey Siri: Turn the Apple TV Off (Puts it to sleep) Pause the TV Resume playing on the TV Go back 45 seconds What did they say? Skip 5 Minutes All of that without ever having to touch the remote.

Learn remote (Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote) is the best feature that wasn't mentioned in this video because it gives you dedicated remote skip buttons (specifically through "Set Up Playback Buttons") that are not available on the Siri remote. I recently bought Airpods 3rd Gen. I used to have a home theater system with multiple speakers, in terms of audio that was better than actually being in the best seat in a theater or at the Super Bowl for example. The newer Airpods are better than that particularly because each person has their own personal home theater system, with the exception that with a home theater system you can actually feel the difference, like it's live versus a recording. I'm currently sitting at home waiting for delivery of my 2022 Apple TV unit as a Christmas present, and educating myself so that when my wife gets home I'll have it all set up. But now watching this I'm thinking maybe it's better if I just connect it and let her set up her own thing because we have a unique situation. I'm American, native English speaker; my wife is Japanese, native Japanese speaker. Both of us use iPhone and iPad. Until now we've been using an old Playstation, though mostly her. If only one can log in with global settings where it's that one person's language and such, I rather it be her. But ideally I want all our stuff separated by login by language, country, content, and so forth.
@carstenehlers1864 Жыл бұрын

So if I want to see my personal content on the larger screen through the Apple TV, I just login to it as myself and mirror that content from the iPad.

Another tip: Use Apple TV remote to control sound bar and TV. Go to Settings -> Remotes and Devices, scroll down beyond "LEARNED REMOTES". There you see "HOME THEATER CONTROL". Turn Control TVs and Receivers to "On". (Default is Off.) Then, click "Volume Control". Select Auto. Provided your TV and sound bar (or other kinds of home theater connected via HDMI) have CEC (or any trade name thereof) turned on, you can can change volume using the Apple TV remove, turn on and off all those devices. To turn on the entire home theater, just press Menu key or TV key. Turning off Apple TV (sleep) using the remote is never trivial; it requires going into Settings and scroll all the way down to find "Sleep Now". But if you have auto off on, at least that will bring down the whole theater as well. (Interestingly, Apple TV also displays any other remote that it has learned in CEC. Selecting Auto is the way to allow its own remote to control others via HDMI.)

One tip you didn’t cover is using the remote for volume up/down on a sound bar connected to tv. This works fine most of the time using IR with sonos beam but I discover that the Apple TV remote does crash and it needs to be restarted sometimes. To restart your remote just hold the TV button and the volume minus button for 5 seconds till you see the light on the Apple TV to off and on. Then the IR volume will start working again. Took me a lot of troubleshooting to figure out the remote crashes from time to time.

You mention doing a longer form video on video settings. Can you post a link to that video as I can’t find it.

Timely, my first ATV will be here Monday! I've tried to get my "smart" Sony Bravia to play nicely with KZbinTV (my primary streaming service) but hitting "Home" on the remote always takes me to Google Home, with no access to my YTTV DVR. Anxious to give this new box a try.

Wow! I had no idea it could do all of that. Thank you. Now write an instruction manual and I will be the first to buy one. 😊

Excellent information, having just bought the new version with ethernet i now know how to get more out of it. My only frustration is the requirement to use an ipad or iphone for some of the featutres. I don't own either, and have no desire to buy into Apples system of making older phones obsolete. A stunning box that blows Amazons new cube out of the water.

Great video. Is there anyway of having Apple TV set up so that you can continue watching an episode or a movie from where you left off?

I'd be interested in seeing tv app performance to see which tv has the best in-tv app performance when streaming and best Ethernet performance.

Amazingly, many of them apply to Apple TV Gen 2! Not 4K Gen 2, but og Gen 2. Who knew the top row had an interactive function? (Too bad other apps are not taking advantage of the feature.) Of course these are tvOS tips so they apply to all generations that run tvOS. Great take!

Have you seen animated Album art? I listened to old albums of Siouxsie and the Banshees ‚Spellbound’ and the Animation blew my mind. Totally surprising, brilliant! Also on iPhone/iPad in the music app, but on the Apple TV 4K it just looks sooo damn kool!
