Two additional tips: 1. With the current remote, clicking on the Right or Left arrows of the navigation ring will skip the content forward or backward. The amount it moves depends on the app. For instance, KZbinTV skips 15 seconds with each click. 2. Changing the Keyboard Layout (Settings -> General -> Keyboard Layout) from Linear to Grid makes it MUCH easier to navigate the on-screen keyboard to enter text.

I have a question about 1. so I currently have an apple tv with the new remote and going forward/backwards on KZbin videos doesn’t work as easily as it used to be on the previous remote anymore. Previously it was like you described but on the new one you always have to swipe up, then right/left and then hit OK instead of just clicking on the left/right side. Is there a setting you know of that fixes this?

One feature you missed which is a must have for me is the Match Content option in the video settings. If that is on and your TV is compatible it streams video at the frame rate and resolution of the content, otherwise the Apple TV converts it to whatever your Apple TV is set to. If you have a mix of content, for example movies at 24 frames a second, UK and North American TV shows which have different frame rates everything streams without annoying jitters, which can be really obvious on panning shots for example. Many of the apps honour the setting too, so Netflix and Plex will match. The main exception is the KZbin app that resolutely converts everything to the overarching setting of the Apple TV.

A vital setting to turn on is 'match content' in the video and audio settings, turn that on for frame rate and HDR. It then instructs the TV to alter frame rate and turn on/off HDR based on the content you are watching for smooth playback.

Great video! Very comprehensive and easy for beginners. I was probably underutilizing the Siri function before, will use that more. One suggestion to include, as some mentioned below, is settings in the “Video and Audio” section around SDR and HDR. These are important to understand and set properly to get a good experience, Apple actually makes things pretty easy in this area. Main issue is that most streaming content is a mishmash of SDR, HDR and Dolby Vision. Also most menus for streaming services are SDR. So forcing the video to Dolby 4K or HDR 4K on Apple TV always will cause SDR content and menus to look terrible and blown out in a lot of cases. General advice in most cases is to set the output on Apple TV to “4K SDR” and then turn on the “Match frame rate” and “match dynamic range” settings to on. This will allow SDR content, such as menus, to be displayed as intended and then auto switch to HDR or Dolby when these frames are detected.

Thanks for the great video - as always your stuff is really informative -- even for a long time Apple-user like myself! One feature I LOVE is the ability to say out-loud "Hey Siri, turn off my TV" just before I fall asleep. Finding the remote always pulls me out of that blissful pre-slumber mode. (I have a HomePod nearby, but as long as all your devices are on the same wi-fi network, your iPhone or even Apple Watch will listen and "speak" to the AppleTV).. A feature I haven't seen which would be great is being able to use the Find My app to locate a missing remote. Often the remotes (especially the older smaller ones) end up hidden behind a pillow or under the sheets or someplace that takes a while to find. A little chirp or beep after speaking "Hey Siri, find my remote" would be awesome and very "Apple" centric.

Excellent and informative introduction to the Apple TV 4K. A couple of things that I particularly like about this steaming box that you didn’t mention is the scrolling feature to quickly and accurately fast forward or reverse on many of the apps. I also think the ability to switch quickly and easily between various different apps is another big benefit of the ATV4K box and provides much greater flexibility than using the built in apps on a smart tv or an Amazon fire stick for example where you have to completely exit one app before accessing another.

2 notes: 1. Using the iPhone as a controller lets you use the iPhone keyboard rather than the hunt-and-peck style for typing. This is useful for things like passwords. Of course, using the iPhone also gives you access to whatever password management software you use. 2. Making the Apple Photos app the first app on the Top Shelf gives you an initial screen that is an 'Up Next' style scroll of photo memories. I find this more pleasing than the choices available from the Apple TV app.

@nthused Жыл бұрын
No audio output for your TV REALLY restricts what you can do. I’ve connected with fiber and with HDMI-ARC (as @jimmyboy1582 mentioned). The HDMI connection seems more reliable with my setup but your experience may be different. No matter what cable you use though…a cable will, almost without exception, be a better option than wireless in both fidelity and ease of use.

The other difference that you missed mentioning between the 2 versions in addition to the price, storage capacity and the ethernet port, is the Matter technology for the compatibility of home automation accessories for your home or office.

If I have two echo dots, can I have sound play through the echo AND Tv speakers at the same time?
@johnmaynard4077 Жыл бұрын
There is another major difference between the models. Only the bigger one supports the new wireless protocol Thread/Matter for home automation backed by Apple, Google and Samsung.

I have been debating for a while whether I wanted to add an Apple TV OS to my eco-system just wasn't really sure if I would get any real use from it, Kind of been waiting to see if they were going to make any announcements in October about the Apple TV before I made the investment as it only seems logical to get the newest model if they were to drop a new one this year. Appreciate your in depth breakdown I found it rather useful as to what to expect from the Apple TV experience, if they haven't dropped a newer model by the end of the month I will prob just go with the 4K with Ethernet option in November.

I find the AirPlay / iPhone mirroring to be quite useful. You can even do it without a Wi-Fi connection on newer models for areas like schools or areas with incompatible networks.

I agree, and I’ve used that feature for a long time now. I’ve had an iPhone for maybe 15 years in a row now but I just bought the S24 ultra.. kind of got sick of Apple, doing the same crap year after year, and I’ve always loved the look in shape of the galaxy.. the newest one of course. I still have my iPhone and I am on it right now, but the galaxy will be shipping sometime soon. I am very very scared because I won’t be able to do the mirroring anymore with my new phone. On my TV I think there’s a Google mirror type thing, but it probably won’t ever work as good as apples. Your comment made me think of that.. that’s all lol.

It's just missing in the control center we could see the battery of the remote control. Hope apple will put this feature in the future...

You can link any headphones or earbuds with apples chips in them this includes AirPods but also beats headphone. Killer feature when I want to watch something or my daughter wants to play girly dramas on the tv without disturbing the whole household.

One of the best videos I’ve ever seen on the Apple TV. Tons of information, presented in a very concise, down to earth manner. Awesome!

Facts about the remote being plastic is an error that could have been fact checked and was not. First Rule of journalism. Facts.

There is always something I learn from each of your videos. Showed the bit about asking Siri 'what did he say' to mean it skips back 10s and briefly shows subtitles to my other half. Her instant reply was "Game Changer" :)

The 1st gen Siri Remote isn’t made out of plastic. It’s made out of aluminum on the back and glass on the front. It’s actually pretty nice.

Your video on Apple TV was excellent. Thank you. I learnt so much about Apple TV capabilities and I’ve had it for two years already!

Great video, but you missed one key feature in the comparisons between the AppleTV models. The higher end Ethernet version offers Thread support for HomeKit accessories such as door sensors, security cameras etc.

I don’t know why I waited so long to get an Apple TV but it is EASILY the best set top box on the market. Hands down. I’ve had Roku, Chromcast, Google TV, Firestick and Nvidia Shield. Apple TV simply does it faster, cleaner, nothing clunky, integration with Apple products is amazing. It’s like you’re sitting there thinking… I wonder did they think to do this…. Like the iPhone… Yes they did. Well what about my AirPods… yea that too. Etc. Then there’s the Apple TV app that can read watch history across all apps too.

Great app in the UK 'TV Launcher' that combines all of the live tv/on-demand apps in one place so you can get a tv guide, now & next etc and then launches the relevant app right into the content for you.

Just purchased a Hisense U8K and am looking for the streaming device to go along with it. I don't do any gaming and don't have a home theater sound system. I'm down to the Apple TV and NVIDIA Shield. Thank you for the informative and well done video.

I love the search bar I can put anything in the search bar and Apple TV 4K will give me results if how to watch it on as many apps that carry what I’m looking for and the free ones vs $$$. I love how Apple gave us this option. And you will know if there are no commercials or not. I use Apple TV 4K in every room of my house. I don’t use the tv or any other box. Apple made me a believer with this box. No one else comes close to this box. It’s #1

We like using the AppleTV over the tv apps. It is more responsive, and we use our phones as remote (the grandkids lost the physical remote). And, on occasion mirror a phone/ipad to the screen.

Hi. You didn’t mention Apple TV‘a role as a HomeKit hub, and how useful it is as a remote for lights, for instance. Also, you didn’t mention the AirPlay potential as a wireless screen to play iPhone/iPad content.

This was amazing thank you. I think you need to edit the video and add the number one reason for the Apple TV. Airplay! This feature known by very few people to share photos and to mirror the iphone was the only reason I bought the device prior to smart tvs adding it to the core features. You should show old people how they can see the iphone and ipad emails photos etc in large format on screen mirrored. We use it to plan family vacation from the couch on google earth etc. Thanks again.

Handy for the Siri command bits, but limited/obvious beyond that (compared to some of your other videos). Keen to see if the Siri functionality will extend to some of my more obscure streaming apps - or even Netflix which I don't think is supported by AppleTV+ in Australia. thx

I originally bought the Apple TV 4K box and a pair of the large HomePods to replace the TV speakers and replace the cumbersome audio amp and speakers setup. This also improved the audio quality significantly. This also cleaned up much of the cabling mess I had below my big screen TV.

Thank you for this. I now have the Apple TV a few month and I am happy with it. The only enjoying thing is that once the screensaver starts, with beautiful pictures, an ‘AirPlay’ pop-up (similar to what you show at the conference room configuration) comes on the screen showing the internet name and the name of the Apple TV. I live in The Netherlands and searched the internet but I cannot find anything how to remove this pop-up. And it really a shame because it blocks a part of the pictures and also disappears and show back again on an other place on the screen. Do you have a solution? Thank you for your help,

Quick correction, the older remote is not made of plastic. Believe it or not that would be an upgrade. It’s aluminum and glass.
