Getting a lot of comments about PS VR2 not being 4K per-eye, rather 2K. Here's the thing... it's neither; however, saying 4K is "more correct." Common resolutions we refer to (HD, FHD, QHD, UHD, etc.) almost exclusively refer to consumer 16:9 aspect ratios: 1920 x 1080, 2560 x 1440, 3840 x 2160, etc. Meanwhile, "2K" and "4K" reference the official cinema resolutions that use a 1.90:1 (full container) aspect ratio: 2048 x 1080 (2K), 4096 x 2160 (4K), etc. Today, we use 4K and UHD or 2K and QHD interchangeably even though they're not, technically. Consumer, UHD 4K comes up 160 horizontal pixels short of "4K" but it's still branded accordingly. The horizontal pixel count is inseparably linked to aspect ratio, but the vertical pixel count remains constant given a resolution. DCI-4K and 4K UHD are different resolutions with rather disparate pixel counts but they're both 2160 vertical pixels. VR headsets typically have near 1:1 (squared) displays in each eye. So to say that the PS VR2 (with a resolution of 2040 x 2000) per-eye is literally 2K pixels in each direction, you'd be right. But EVERYBODY refers to "2K" resolution when talking about the HORIZONTAL resolution-not vertical which would either be 1080p or 1440p pixels. At 2000 vertical pixels, you're a lot closer to 2160p than you are to 1440p. Even when considering *total* pixel count, the PS VR2 still, has nearly 500K more total pixels than a 16:9 "2K" QHD display despite having half the number of horizontal pixels. Now it doesn't seem too fair to say the PS VR2 is 2K does it? But it's also not 4K. The reality is, each eye has 2000p display-horizontal pixel count be damned. Put them side by side and you're pretty darn close to resolution and aspect ratio of DCI-4K-closer than you would be to UHD-4K. Does that make it "4K" per eye? No. But it also doesn't make it "2K" per eye. It's 4K-split between eyes. But I don't think that's gonna get past the marketing department...

Most people sort of translate "2k" or "4k" to PPD in their heads, though, even if they don't know the PPD or what PPD is. If I just increase the height of a 3840x2160 screen to accommodate 4k vertical pixels that wouldn't mean the PPD increased and got any closer to the PPD of an 8k screen, it just means I can fit more image on the screen vertically rather than being more detailed. In my opinion that's how calling it 4k can be disingenuous to consumers. Please correct me if I am misunderstanding anything.

yep it summed op most thing nicely (besides a few thing in the beginning) and also included more info than i already had. Now that I've watched the video completely here are my additional rumors an thoughts. Rumors say the pack, has 2 stacked iPhone Pro Max batteries for a total capacity of 8646 mAh and indeed 2 hours of use. likely needed because - bright display's to compensate for the pancake lenses (i also notice this on my pico 4 and its even just on medium brightness) - a powerful soc (likely with corresponding TDP) - a lot of sensors including Lidar... The pack is likely also gonna contain the M2 like SOC + supporting electronics like Ram and Storage... This will allow for upgradability. i left out my thoughts about the camera system since it's purely speculation and the info i have is just to conflicting. The display's will be made at tsmc(with Sony tech) at a bom cost of $ 120 a piece. The $ 40 price is indeed the current price @ bulk for decent Pancake lenses. For software, well 2D windows in a 3D space or XR environment work surprisingly well (From my experience with the pico 4) The avatars are gonna be called Holographic avatars if i recall. AR based lip tracking could be done based upon speech recognition, Nvidia already has a technique for this. (but it's still strange they won't use an ir cam for that) And since the Puck (current name of the external device containing the battery) can be upgraded, the power could be increased in the future. Media consumption in VR is awesome btw. Watching 3D/360° media really looks good. (and my experience is just on the pico 4 with 2160*2160 lcd screens and pancake lenses) About the apple VR media content itself, yea i'm also skeptical. maybe the'll re-master content using AI to produce 3D (decent 360° look unlikely) but on this i also must add that i have recently watched a short 3D/360° series called Darth Vader on my pico 4. it was 3 rendered but looked really nice. Later (when i notice the sound didn't move as i moved my headset) i found out this was content grabbed/rendered from a Star Wars VR game. This makes me wonder if it would be possible for Disney to easily port their 3D rendered Disney+ content to VR, by doing a remaster just by re-rendering it. Same for these lego style movies or any other fully 3 rendered series/movies Games, yea probably not much at launch. And at a cost of $ 3000 it will be a niche for gamers unless maybe it supports teathering with steamVR (not to likely) Later in 2025 there will be a cheaper $ 1500 version (made by foxcon) By then there may be a bunch of gaming titles. About using it for virtual screens with like a mac mini/ pro or standalone with my pico 4 @ 2160*2160 per eye this looks cool and okish but not a replacements for real screens. with the 4k screens in the apple headset this likly would look awsome and would be very usable. (exept for the keyboerd i guess) On the last part, i was unaware it would be sold at a loss but your explenation makes allot of sence. if they manly target content creators to get the eco system going. And it would also explain why the went for/allowed an external Puck

Nreal Air lets you do the same with just a cell-phone and a pair of sun-glasses. You'd need a power-bank if you'd want to work for hours on end, but for small sessions it should work just fine. A wireless keyboard and mouse and a USB-C cable from your phone to the glasses, and you can either clone your phone's screen, or use Samsung Dex if you have a Samsung phone, or use the Nreal Air software that gives you a desktop version of your phone, similar to Samsung Dex. With Microsoft Office on your phone and connected to your glasses like this, you can set up as many monitors as you want, and you can even place them around the room on different walls or just hanging in the air, and they'll stick there for when you walk past later. You can have 3 monitors floating in your work area with different info, and another in the kitchen with cooking recipes, and another one on the toiler with cartoons running on replay. Then you can just walk around in the house, and they'll just be there. Check out Nreal Air on KZbin, they glasses are basically made for someone in your situation and costs a fraction of the price. PS: You can also connect it to ta laptop, PC, console, DVD drive for whatever reason, anything with a HDMI or USB-C video/audio output, I just used your phone as an example, since you'll always have it anyway, and the glasses are literally the size of sun-glasses, so they aren't a problem to carry around either. Full disclosure; I haven't tried them myself, but I've seen multiple reviews, and they all end up surprised and amazed over how good it actually is. They all basically say they had low expectations and high demands, but Nreal delivered in all aspects and made them change their minds. Some of them even took their time to say something along the lines of "I'll actually continue to use this! It's actually good! I didn't expect it, but I've had it for 30 days and I catch myself using it more and more every day! It's just amazing!". Paraphrasing.

When I got a headset I was blown away with the experience. At first I had no idea what to do with it, but after trying a couple games I ended up getting another Quest 2 so my family and I could play together. The hard part about selling the headsets is trying to get someone to try it, and getting them to figure out what to do. Virtual travel, concerts, and 360 documentaries would show people the kinds of things that a non gamer would enjoy. It may need to wait for the headset to be able to be put on as you lounge on a couch or in bed.

Apple is historically late to the market, but they tend to "do it right" and I think that they will improve the software side of VR as well as add some legitimacy to it. Yours is the best summary of the hardware, the reasons for the rumored expense, and the other features that I've seen. What I'd love to see (and this is very un-Apple) is for all of these VR companies to provide some interoperability with each other. If they want the "metaverse" to be the next internet, it can't be owed by Apple, Meta, or HTC, etc.

The original iPhone was a success due to it's competitive price at the top of the market. $499 for the 4gb and $599 for 8gb. They then aggressively dropped the 8gb to $399 and brought out a 16gb for $499 in less than a year, which pissed off a lot of early adopters. For comparison the nokia N95 was $730, LG Prada $770. So they absolutely crushed the competition in design and pricing. If rumours are to be believed, the headset will do neither and this will be it's biggest obstacle. But maybe Tim strategy is to recover some of the production costs and build an app system so that they can hit the consumer market aggressively over the coming years. The apple watch seemed like a disaster at first but gradually more people have picked one up over time.

I think the idea of ‘floating iPad apps’ anchored in space around the home/workspace could be very interesting. They could be grabbed, moved, resized… A floating ‘kitchen iPad’ with recipe and grocery apps side-by-side, or a living room iPad with streaming apps to beam video to my virtual 90” tv. If they can make operating a virtual iPad feel good, they may not need to go through all the work of figuring out an entirely new UI to do things we already know how to do.

I think the biggest improvement apple will bring is processing power. If it's got an m1/m2 it will blow everything out of the water. Even an a series chip would be amazing.

I'd be curious if they managed to have the headset function as a standalone Mac device that has something like 3 virtual screens... especially in addition to any other apps it may have. That alone could be a killer feature that the other headsets don't have. Imagine being on a plane but having a full Mac experience with a bunch of full sized monitors available... instead of just a laptop. Like you said, I think it's pretty hard to guess what the software side of things will look like, but it's fun to speculate.

I'm sure this has been asked a million times. But how will this compare on people's eyesight vs staring at an LED monitor all day? The same, worse? Will we all end up being super near sighted? I suppose if costs came down these things might replace monitors eventually as there may be less materials/waste in manufacturing.

I know at least 1 person thats more of a casual user that uses VR. After college I moved out of state and about once a week we launch up a call in the quest and play virtual mini golf. I always see comments with responses like “Just go do that in person”. I don’t understand why people think everyone someone would want to hangout with is driving distance. But as someone who has literally carried external monitors into a hotel for work all I want Apple to get perfectly is multiple monitoring support in VR. The 3rd party solution available for free on quest is good software but the hardware resolution is just low enough to make text difficult and cause eye strain

This was a great catch-up, thank you! I'm an original Kickstarter supporter of the DK1, so it's cool to see the tech progress. I've gone DK1, DK2, Quest 1, Quest 2, Reverb G2 and currently Pico 4 (pancake lenses, and they are so clear). Pimax crystal is exciting and this Reality Pro I think will be super cool once they get rolling on it. One thing about video content, there is such accelerating development in A.I., stable diffusion and other predictive video and rendering technologies (check out Two Minute Papers), it wouldn't surprise me that they can generate believable in-show VR experiences just based on the video footage as source material. I've been dreaming of walking around that apartment and diner in Pulp Fiction for a long time. If that technology doesn't currently exist behind Apple's doors, it will.

@@OverbiteGames That's a good point, and I do hack around with UE5 a bit - but I meant to be there while the scene is actually unfolding - live in the action, in the actual movie. That'd be really something.

questions: - when i'm on a conference call in VR, can poor people show up in another color so i know who to respect? - can i get fancy wheels for it? - can i get it without a headphone jack because courage? - in multiplayer games, can there be a title above my head that says "playing on apple vr" so people know i got it like that? dont let me down, apple!

It is definitely niche, but I would say that in addition to hard core gamers it has found some success in exercise. Beat Saber as a casual game and exercise workout can't be ignored. I've talked to several people anecdotally who used a box game to exercise. VR definitely has a drawer problem of being too fiddly and getting shoved into a drawer to gather dust. I think a better execution will help. Facebook shot themselves in the foot several times with various FB login, OS upgrade issues, etc.

I'm very interested in seeing what they'll do. This really is a market ripe for disruption. It seems like Meta has focused almost completely on gaming, and for the money they're pouring into it, they're producing next to nothing. These headsets remain a collection of independent games/rooms without tieing any of it together. Things like watching a movie and stopping to make a hand gesture, open your email client, scroll a bit, then gesture again to close it and return to your movie. Or making a call without needing to take the thing off and fully break immersion. The very fact that Apple has never been about gaming previously gives me a lot of hope for the device. I really do hope they disrupt the market, it desperately needs it. I'll buy one most likely.

Here’s what Apple’s VR headset needs to be: shaped like a pair of sunglasses, priced to replace an iPhone/iPad and powerful enough to replace a MacBook Air, not run ultra quality gaming experiences. Apple basically needs to produce the iPhone for VR, prompting such wide adoption that it becomes as normal to see someone wearing them as it does to see someone wearing AirPods. Your average Apple user doesn’t want a premium XR experience, they want to be able to watch TikTok videos whilst on the bus to work or write emails on a giant virtual screen during their flight.

Vr/Ar will still change the world one day but it was overestimated in how complicated it would be to get it where it needs to be for the masses. Love my quest 2, its amazing for what it is. Can't wait for quest 3. The dream of ready player one will never die as its just too enticing for our human imagination!

If they ditch the idea of elegance, they can place the battery and SoC on the _backside_ of the unit which would permit for even distribution of weight on the head. I'm still waiting for the first manufacturer to make a helmet, though. _One_ so when you fall, you'll be protected, but also _two_ more room for electronics.

I think your'e spot on when you say this is a risk in an attempt to build up software for future products that could change the world if done correctly (i.e. good ar glasses) rather then a product meant to be sold to consumers.

Awesome video, and what a conclusion at the end! I think you're hitting the nail on the head here. I'll be honest, I think that we will be surprised with how willing people are going to be to jump on VR with Apple's name attached to it. Oculus and HTC struggled with establishing a user base because of the undeveloped market for VR, as well as the high costs. Sony has struggled because the VR headset has been attached to the Playstation and never pushed as a system seller itself. However, Apple sells millions of units of cell phones at 1k, and something that is wildly more visually impressive like VR will attract more people than I think is initially expected for VR. I'm not saying that I think it won't be a rocky start, but I do think that the number of people willing to jump aboard will exceed expectations, and maybe support will follow suit.

It's nice to hear the opinion of someone who is knowledgeable about VR, but isn't a VR content creator (and thus incentivized to rose-tint the situation). I'm beyond excited for these things but when you put it all together like this it's definitely a gamble on Apple's part.

Honestly as a Former Apple Employee i would hope the first Reality product they release is AR Glasses. The VR space is very niche. Targeting such a small market , and of that small market maybe a quarter will buy a Apple VR headset, will not be a success. Honestly I don’t see VR taking off for years if it ever does. AR is where the Revolution awaits. People would pay hundreds for beautiful glasses that offer services like directions, notifications, etc.

VR may be pretty low in use now but as soon an Apple does it, it will magically become the best thing to exist in the world. Yes I'm being salty at sheeps but otherwise I am looking forward to some more competition in the space, hopefully it can kick qualcomm in the ass so they actually do some innovation

I think if this headset is equivalent or better than the Varjo XR3 in passthrough then even at the crazy price there will be lots of interest. Can't wait to see what people come up with once tracking and passthrough becomes so good that it is indistinguishable from reality.
