It's more like, Valve and more specifically Gabe Newell could see the potential that VR had, and how far Oculus would have to go from what they were shown. They weren't entirely interested in hopping into the market right off the bat. And personally, I think that was a smart move. They struck at the perfect time with the Valve Index and made one of the most popular PCVR headsets out there nowadays.

@@Samevi I really hope the deckard does the same thing for the standalone market that the Index did for the PCVR market in terms of making high fidelity more accessible. I agree, all of his examples that spanned 2014 to 2022 really showed how the technology evolved, and got us excited for a bright and innovative future of VR as it established itself as a technology and grown. *this is off topic and not related to the first part of my comment* there are similar videos/ time line that focus on another section of tech such as smartphones, I personally knew many things were happening in parallel to the oculus timeline. I would like to see a total timeline of the growth of all consumer tech from CPUs, to Phones, to Headsets to see how things evolved over time in coorellation to other tech

this really makes me have a new found appreciation for how far the tech has come, i remember in middle school my friends and I attempting to pool together a years worth of savings between all 3 of us only for none of our parents wanting to trust kickstarter, in hindsight im kinda glad as the DK1 probably wouldn't have been what we were after, but its insane to see how far its came in like a decade, id argue not even phones have gone through as big improvements (i mean with VR we went from no DOF to 6DOF full body tracking WITH hand tracking, with phones we went from what? touch screen with stylus to touch screen with finger?) its sad that the original oculus founder got thrown out, seems to be mark's kink really, but im also glad we got to have the quest and quest 2

As someone who had a Rift CV1 when they first came out, you should really play Robo Recall, the graphics were and still are way ahead of it's time, it's basically on par with Alyx's quality but released way back when the only headsets you could play it on had resolutions that couldn't even see all the game's detail. The DK1 and DK2 days were amazing. Almost entirely in the hands of optimistic enthusiasts, all of the content and experiences being made were extremely creative and experimental. There were so many tech demos that are better than almost everything out there in recent years. There were no controllers back then, but there were all sorts of third-party companies making awesome hand tracking in motion cap type stuff. A lot of it was so much better than what we have now, of course what we have now is very accessible and user friendly. There was nothing more exciting in gaming than Palmer Luckey and Oculus. Midnight releases of new consoles were cool and all, but this was like stepping into a new thing altogether, and it was enthusiasts and small time developers showing what was possible that attracted eventually the venture capital etc. Nothings are a bit more sterile, but it's still great to be able to play practically any game in VR, even if all the experiments are largely gone.

i still remember the day my dad brought home a gear VR. and soon after started watching youtubers play on the oculus rift. it was such a dream to have tasted VR and see people enjoying it. i was beyond excited when i got my hands on the first oculus quest, i'd play it so much i'd get all sweaty from moving around so much. now with the quest 3 i without a doubt dub it one of my favorite pieces of gaming hardware

@nagyFerko
@nagyFerko Жыл бұрын
sorry but when you said meta saw the most potential in the quest just wrong, they only saw money in it, the major difirence between the pc and the standalone market is control, and accessebility, you can clearly sell more device if it's not depend from other hardware, also in the quest platform, the control is in meta's hands, with just a quest headset, you can only get games from the quest store or whaterever the name of it, but in a pc vr headset, you most likely get games on steam, and that means no extra money for meta, also they are less likely to get as many data from, which is major reason for the quest platform being relatively cheap for a home user,they can sell your data, and you are only able the purchase games from them, it's a clear win in my eyes. And yes, you can connect to a pc, and play steam games, or even pireted games, but most of the quest users probably doesn't even have a vr capable pc.

Ah, a CV1 fan. Good man. This HMD is far too overlooked. It's very light, comfortable, effective, excellent controllers, 90hz, OLED, on-the-fly IPD adjustment, good straps, dual screens, good sound, good mic and with 3 tracking sensors like you and I have you'll never miss a beat of accuracy. Absolute brilliant for what is now 8 years old. I loved it the day I got mine. I got it on release day via pre order and still love it for its ease of use, in terms of horsepower needs - a simple laptop will have it running most titles. In the UK, a perfect condition (literally like-new) CV1 are available for as little as £40, approximately $50 - other mice/keyboard/headset nothing is that much of a bargain and useful in the world of PC hardware at this moment in time. I'm not kidding. If you can think of a better kit for less or the same then I'd like to hear it. BTW I purchased a Quest 1 for £40 the other day for Kicks even though I've already got one. And I own 2 Quest 2's (initially I owned three but sold one to buy another Quest 3). I've two children who are now age 17 & 24 so this is partly why I keep/buy certain hardware. Plus I'm total tech nerd and lover of VR. When the CV1 arrived it was my dreams coming true. Just for blasting around tracks in Project Cars or Automobilista 2 is worth the price of VR admission alone nevermind the rest of the wonderful doors it opens like Half-Life: Alyx, art, exploration, fitness, psychology, social interaction, design... Like you I own nearly all Oculus HMD's with Rift (CV1) and Quest 3 being the biggest and best leaps within the genre from the company. I too wish modders would incorporate the CV1 tracking cameras to Quest 3 for uber tracking. Of course buying Quest Pro controllers might work as well but it's more money plus controllers are almost as much as a complete used Quest Pro. I feel almost cheated that Meta changed the name to Quest. I thought the name Rift was perfect and cool, even if it was to eventual be called Meta Rift. However, the "Oculus Rift" was properly cool. Remember, as apple will tell you (being the masters of name changing - not game changing), marketing and mindshare is half the battle. However, no matter what people think of Zuck, I'm thrilled he's putting his gotten gains into VR. VR needs the love and the deep pockets to take off. VR/AR is inevitable. We already do most things virtually be it via FB, TV, a phone call, letter or smoke signal - it's all virtual and the goal is all about immersion which will lead to eventual limitless possibilities. And a positive byproduct is efficency, just as a phone call to someone is far quicker and cheaper than driving to see them. As for Palmers political views, in the world of business, when you're not the boss but are a big public figure and almost the face of the VR space, he should have known better. I understand that Zuck, head of one the largest public companies on earth saw this as an expensive issue that wasn't going away anytime soon, so... Oculus wasn't Palmer Luckey. He was the face of VR for a breif time who, on the face it/according to some media, used his position for political gains. Zuckerberg, Gabe Newell, John Carmack and their respective teams, among others in the space - and the public, the fans openly pushing VR like yourself, are the future of VR. Luckey is too deep in politics to be the face of VR. Forget Luckey. He was more the Jobs than Woz of VR at the time. Quest 2 has sold over 20m units and counting. It's still selling well due to the price drop.
