Why Apple Products Are Getting So Expensive

Apple Explained

Күн бұрын

Apple has almost always had a reputation of pricing their products quite a bit higher than their competition, and this premium cost is commonly referred to as the Apple Tax. And it can be traced as far back as the original iPod in 2001, which had a starting price of $399, or about $570 adjusted for inflation. And when compared to other hard drive-based music players that sold for around $200, the iPod’s price was staggering. And when the iPhone was released in 2007, one of its biggest criticisms was its price, coming in at $499, or about $600 today, and that was with a two-year contract. And don’t forget the MacBook Air, which debuted with a $1,800 price tag. And that got you just 64GB of solid state storage. So the Apple tax is nothing new to longtime Apple users, but there has been an unusual trend upward in almost all Apple’s product categories over the past few years. And I think there’s more to that story than the Apple tax can account for.

I doubt they'll make their streaming services free. I say that because Apple streaming services only work well on Apple devices. I decided to try a free trial of Apple music on my Galaxy S8. At the time the Galaxy S8 was the latest Galaxy. My phone worked on all apps flawlessly but for some reason Apple Music didn't. It would keep crashing and it had so many bugs. The music kept buffering while other times it suddenly crashed. No way I'd ever pay for Apple streaming services when I can enjoy Spotify, Netflix, and Hulu just fine. Even many Apple users dont care about Apple's streaming services.

@@johnbiscuit8272 Apps do update themselves John. Not even one of the apps you mentioned above stayed the same in the last few years. They have updated with tons of new features that most phones and tablets released in the last few years can operate. Take a look at how Facebook operates their video call services with a lot of visuals for users to use on their face: turning into a rabbit, a dragon... I can see how our old phones are slow while performing this and that is I am willing to pay extra cash to earn one of these new iPad. But why not an Android device? Please, go to Google and read about how strong these iPads are. All these Android tablet manufactures are doing is to mimic the look of iPad, not the real power of iPads. Most of them get slower just after 1 year or even shorter than that. iPads stay longer, much longer. I bought one 4 years ago and it is still running fast. I'd pay a huge bunch of money for a device to run smoothly for 4-5 years rattan than an Android tablet or phone which could possibly slow or die right after 1 year.

john Biscuit it is not about phone. It is about how crap that google did in the few years back. I wonder how many android phone did last upto 2-3 years. Sure it will be out there, some one still using it but google didn’t support it. I love my xperia go. It is likely 7 years old . Same with my iphone 4. Even now i still prefer xperia go because old memories. Now everything i can do is just calling and texting. Not even access to email or watching youtube. I dont like how apple raise their price specially for xr vs macbook air which are entry product. Until its price unworthy then i may consider to look for some new os. Google really the most companies i ever hate, they sold user info for advertising, they use user as a lab rat for their new changing , forget every phone that is older than 1 years old. Really!? So you can buy 2 mid range phones from android for every 4 years or spent it on the phone that cost double the price but live up to 4 years

Honestly, I belive that when they don't change their policy or don't come out with something completley new and revolutionary, they will die slowly in the futrue. Apple has so much potential. But it wouldn't be the first time that Apple goes down. Back then Steve itself said, that they need to lower the price of the Macintosh in order to people to buy them. The company didn't listen to him so they got nearly bankrobbed. One of the most important things for a tech hardware company is, HOW MANY PEOPLE actually use their hardware. So with other words, if less people use iPhones and Macs because they get too expencive, they will slowly die.

There's one more reason I think you may have forgotten about, and that is the simple psychology of premium prices. For some products, people assume the product is better if it's more expensive, even if the component parts of the product are no better than the competition (this holds especially true to things like fashion). Apple has successfully branded themselves as a premium technology company, and so people expect, and maybe even WANT Apple products to be expensive (whether it's justified by better tech or not).

People are already being driven away, I have had several friends that have switched to an android device in the last year, and although they aren't as happy with the interface of their devices compared to apple, they did it based on principle, and have quickly grown used to android. Middle class individuals are having a really hard time being able to keep the money they make these days, and they don't like being taken advantage of. I have an iPhone 7plus, and although I love it I plan to switch to another phone when mine decides to give out. I can't justify the amount of money that apple is asking, and am not willing to still pay a premium price for their subpar base models. I have to eat and pay rent in this economy, therefore apple will lose a customer.

A few notes: 1. Apple crossed the line of improving their bottom line at the expense of customer experience some time ago. 2. I’m stuck in the ecosystem, so I haven’t switched to other devices, but I have stopped purchasing new Apple products. My MacBook Pro is from 2011, and my phone is an iPhone 6 (I’ve replaced batteries in both of them - and not by paying Apple). I also have an iPhone SE, but only because I could buy it new for $38. 3. You didn’t mention the hidden price hikes. For example, by removing the headphone jack Apple forced customers to give them another $159 for headphones to achieve the very basic functionality of listen to something while charging. Something that used to be free with the included headphones. 4. I highly, highly doubt the Netflix-like service will remain free for long. Apple Music was free for awhile as well, but now it isn’t.
@Blaze6108
@Blaze6108 5 жыл бұрын
Isn't n.3 borderline false? The iPhone still includes perfectly compatible earphones in the box. Also, if you want to switch ecosystems you should know that almost everything is intercompatible nowadays, things like calendars and contacts can be exported through standardized formats. Things like notes and emails are either just glorified text files (exportable as, well, text) or just remote services that will work just as well on a different ecosystem.There's a switch to Android website that shows how to do all that almost entirely automatically.

Well, the reason why Steve Jobs made Apple's things incompatible in some ways is because you lose control if you let anyone in (an example is the so much fragmented market of Android) and thus can't make sure the user isn't getting an experience that wasn't intended. But guess it's changing a little bit now.

@Anon 1 You won't sell anything if you don't know how to market your products. Steve Jobs was a marketing genius who knew exactly what people wanted for before even they did. This is why Apple's most successful products are reinventions rather than inventions. And Jobs greatest reinvention was Apple itself, a company that he co-founded and was fired from, which almost killed Apple. He then returned as CEO when Apple was on the brink of bankruptcy and saved the company.

I would advise people who are locked in those ecosystems and have a healthy mind about it like you to just buy used "older" Apple stuff, until your hardware is all together either unusable, or just old enough anyways, and it is time for you to change, and you saved a lot of money anyways from not having the newest smartphone etc. Then you can jump ship and get your work (in general get your shit done) anyways cost effectively. Problem solved. Get yourself some decent hardware for way less. Maybe on a Desktop or Laptop that has windows on it you install a nice dual boot linux distro that like Jobs would call it "just works" (Ubuntu is a bit bloaty, it is quiet filled Xubuntu does the job well also from Canonical, and Manjaro XFCE is also killing it, but for the bit savy people, has a lot of graphical tools like Ubuntu to). The installation is Child like simple now and you just restart with your new easily installed dual boot system for using all the windows programs that might be necessary, there you have your special environment instead of Windows if you don't need to use the exclusive Windows programs. Problem solved. All done. Bye Bye Apple.

Someone at the company realized that most of their passengers were so wealthy, their secretary or assistant made their arrangements. The passengers had no idea what a ticket cost (~$2,500, in '84-dollars). So, British Airways SURVEYED THE PASSENGERS: how much do you think your ticket cost? Their answers... DOUBLED THE PRICE. So much for the "exceptionalism" of the top 1%. Apple's customers tend to be, also... from their money... easily parted.

Loyal Apple fan here. I hate the Mac Mini. I hate the MacBook Air. I hate the iPad Pro. I hate the Apple Pencil. I like the iPhone. I like the Apple Watch. I like the air pods. As of the next few years. I’m going to leave Apple entirely. I won’t endorse this unnecessary and stupid Apple tax. I honestly don’t think Apples products are good enough to justify the price. I’m a normal person on an okay to good salary in Britain. I probably would’ve bought the series 4 if it was priced the same as before. I haven’t as the price is so high it’s hard to justify. I did buy the XS Max Which I now regret and wish I bought the XR. I think my love for Apple has died. Apple offers 64GB phones and iPads in 2018???? What?????? Apple offers 128gb laptops and desktops in 2018???? What????? I think Microsoft now seems like a better company for value for money. Apple in my mind is now for the 1% of the 1%. I didn’t mind a small apple tax but I’m finding apples current pricing and offerings making me sick. Phone wise I actually wish I had a phone like the One Plus 6. It’s so fast and so cheap. My XS max is twice the price but not twice as good. Laptop wise I think Microsoft and Dell are making some good hardware. I hate the fact there is so little competition in the Apple Watch market. That bugs me. Come on google and Microsoft. AirPods are also on their own and have no competition. The Apple Watch series 2 and air pods were fantastic products. I’m hoping over the next 2 years. There is more competition so I can fully switch away from Apple perhaps to Google or One Plus.

At some point, they will price themselves out of business. Not just Apple, but all tech companies. Even the "cutting edge tech" will no longer be justification for buying a new gadget. In reality, these "innovations" aren't truly innovative. We still use the same interface, still the same click, drag, spread, pinch, and swipe - BORING, and still use the same batteries that seem to die even faster than previous generations. And yet we are still fooled into thinking next year's model will be better? I've been over the tech craze for three years now. I no longer buy the latest and greatest when they're immediately released, nor even after waiting three months for the real life reviews. Apple isn't the only company pulling your leg. Nothing is groundbreaking anymore in an age where tech gadgets get updated every three months just for the sake of sales. Honestly, I would much rather spend money on a product I know will give me 10 years minimum of reliable use. But since tech cannot guarantee that, I won't be lining up at stores on release day anytime soon.
@ijaen
@ijaen 5 жыл бұрын
I do not agree, let me give you my opinion. These companies really understand price elasticity and I'm sure Apple keeps moving the same or more units to the market at a higher price. They really know what the consumer expects and is able to pay and the second they feel the consumer is backing out they will re adjust. I hope this starts soon but I will not put money on it because with every new model and new price brackets they just keep selling more and more units. I'm an Apple full range consumer and I pay this because I know Apple products last me a long, long time. Consumer demand dictates price. I work for a really big company that exercises this too well. Retail prices are built top to bottom now starting with what the consumer is actually eager to pay for a pair of sneakers and then that way you downscale to FOB/cost pricing. This is healthy because it builds a pull strategy for product instead of pushing product to the market. When we, as consumers, stop paying high ticketed items the prices will go lower. Are we doing this? No. Take cars for example, a Toyota Corolla was always a low priced economy vehicle but as reliability and consumer demand grew the prices also went up to actual prices where a basic model can cost up to $20k! That is not economy! What you are doing is actually the best strategy, buy what you need when you need it, not a minute sooner.

I agree. At a different point. I don’t think that just because people like the previous product they will immediately buy the next one. Which is what companies must think if they’re pumping out new computers,phones,tablets,watches,cameras and way more. I only got a new iPad when my one at the time wore out and was REALY REALY slow. And the iPad I have now has been with me for 3 years. It’s the old iPad Pro, and my previous one was THE ORIGINAL IPAD 2. So I didn’t upgrade straight away.and I’m not upgrading anytime soon.

Cannot compare something to the past since the value changing through time. I still buying apple products because , I believe 1000 justify at least 4 years when 500 android can only have from 1 to 2 years...so its mean,i have to upgrade every 2 years, same price tho...and nothing guarantee that the mid ranges give you best experience

I don’t want to feel caught in their ecosystem as a cash-cow. I was surprised how many good alternatives there are out there, both phones and laptops.

jean-pierre damen yeah I love Apple products but I’m going keep my iPhone X for as long as I can and after that, I’ll probably move to one of the flagship killer androids. Not sure about my MacBook tho, I had it before I had the any other Apple products & still preferred it to similar priced windows laptops. In fact I’ve had it so long that it’s cost me €450/year at this point which is better longevity than I’ve ever gotten out of a windows machine (and much more stable, I think it's only crashed/froze bad enough to be rebooted ~3 times in all the time I've had it). It’s also a huge pain moving all my photos. The integrated photos app in iCloud/iPhone/Mac is so handy. I always hated copying photos from an SD Card to a window computer cos theres no way of easily spotting duplicates

Part of Apple's strategy is showing the cheapest models with low speed and capacity to convince customers to upgrade parts, thus spending more. Or recently by selling dongles. The shift certainly was obvious under Tim Cook, but Cook managed to double Apple's revenue and profit. In fact Cook is doing a great job at that. So mind that Cook is not about great products, as Jobs was, but about great profits.

After 10 years of I phone ownership, last year I switched to Samsung Galaxy S8+. This was the result of reaching the conclusion that Apple is taking advantage of consumers like me by keeping the same design with minor changes and marking it up. Look at I phone 6, 6S, 7, 8. All are very similar in every aspect with a little bit of higher resolution cameras and faster chip. Needless to say the prices got bumped significantly higher and higher. That is how Apple could afford to have nearly $200 billion dollars cash available in their accounts. Unfortunately for the consumers as commented by another viewer of this video, there are plenty of i sheep out there. The part that I am proud of myself is convincing 4 of my friends to switch from I phone to Samsung S8. Now in all honesty, I do miss the ease of use of an I phone. Especially since I still own an I pad. However, I am a true believer in standing up for your rights and defending it rather than letting a greedy corporation like Apple sticking it to me. I hope this will awaken some i sheep out there in order to make a better change for everyone. Respectfully, Ron

The Apple Tax goes back way further than the iPod. Let's travel back to 1992. For about $3K, you'd get a Mac running at around 25 mhz, that included a 9" grayscale CRT, 2 MB or RAM, a 60 MB HD, and admittedly, a CD drive. For about $700 less, I got a 486 DX-33, 8 MB of RAM, a 180 MB HD, a 14" SVGA monitor and two floppy drives (5.25" and 3.5"). Now, I didn't get a sound card or CD-drive, but even with adding them as extras, it still would have come out to be a couple of hundred dollars less. And the software selection was WAY higher. It just didn't make sense back then to get a Mac unless you really wanted or needed one. Things got better over the years, but now, Apple is amping the prices up again to the point where it doesn't make sense to buy a new Apple product as the price to performance ratio is much less than what it was even a couple of years ago. The best bet is to buy new old stock, or refurbished, or used Macs as they'll still be compatible, maybe slightly slower, but have more ports and thus less 'dongle hell'.

@remyrising 5 жыл бұрын
Except that in 1992 The average price of a CD ROM Drive was $400+ and even an AdLib was $200. $300+ for a nicer Sound Blaster. RAM was also still over $100 a mb back then while an average 486SX system came with 1mb-2mb and a 40mb HDD at a $2000 price point. So getting a 486, especially a DX, with 8mb RAM and a 180MB HDD for $2300 seems way too cheap to be true.

I owned a retail PC store in the 90's. I will say Apple was expensive but there was a reason back then. They uses SCSI hard drives vs. MFM/RLL hard drives and then IDE , then SATA. The SCSI drives are 300% more costly back then but were super fast and lasted forever. They could also be daisy chained together with a simple cable and didn't need an adapter card and to be manually setup like in the pc's. I had to carry a book produced every 6 months with the heads/sectors/cylinders and landing zone to manually set each drive. For Apple it was plug and play. Apple also used USB and Firewire first, had a mouse first, had great support compared to Dell, Compaq, etc. They were still more than the pc but the price difference was not that much if you built a same hardware pc machine. The displays were better quality. PC's had a range from crappy cheap to super awesome. Most people bought super cheap to sorta cheap, Apple only sold super awesome, so the costs were always higher. I had a few customers who had both ( for work reasons ) and the stuff the Apple could do that Dos couldn't was impressive. Apple used a GUI before MS did and that was a huge selling feature if you had the money. Also you didn't buy an Intel DX33 back then, you bought an AMD that was faster and 10% cheaper. It wasn't until 2006 with the Core series that Intel finally started to out perform AMD. Cyrix and IBM were junk but also cheaper. AMD rules as did DR DOS on the PC side. Both better and cheaper than the alternatives. It is why MS came out with Win 95, to kill off Digital Research, and it worked a few years later. Win 95 and Win 98 were just Windows on top of Dos but bundled together to force you to use MS if you wanted Windows. By that point Windows was taking over for consumer stuff while Dos still had a hold on business programs. By the late 90's Dos was pretty much dead and Windows was the new king.

@@chrisbatson8748 While all that may be true, the real value was in the amount of software available and the customization available. Yeah, headaches would invariably ensue as you tried to get everything to play nicely, whereas with an Apple, you were pretty damn sure that everything you got was going to work, but there were other little caveats as well. Let's zoom forward to the year 2000. Diablo II had just been released and was a monster hit. Blizzard had trouble keeping the game in stock as it sold out very, very quickly. I finally got my copy a couple of months after release. Went down to the local EB Games, picked up my PC version for $39.99, and happily marched up to the counter to pay. As I passed the one small shelf that had Mac games and products, I noticed that D2 for Mac was $52.99. 'Man, I'd hate to be a Mac owner and have to pay that much more for games.', I thought to myself as I paid for my copy. When I got home, I started to look at the CD case, and instructions, and thought, 'Hmmm...it certainly seems as if this might also have the Mac version included...'. Luckily, I worked at a printing company which had brand new G4 towers and thought 'Let me bring this to work and let's see if my theory is correct.'. And it was. There was absolutely no difference between the PC and Mac versions of the game. Common knowledge to some at the time maybe, but obviously not to all as EB and Blizzard wouldn't have gotten away with that little scam if there was. I'm quite sure there were more than a few of the Mac Faithful who grabbed the Mac box without even looking twice and spent $13 or more for the exact same game. Maybe the price hike was to cover the dev costs for making a Mac version. Who knows. It still stands to reason that with a little bit of research and planning, you'd still get a much better machine by going with a PC back then. I managed to get quite a few years out of my PC before finally buying a new one as I upgraded the motherboard, the CPU, the GPU, the sound card, put in a CD-Drive, and more memory before finally hitting a brick wall about seven or eight years later. I will give points to the SCSI drives though. I've got a couple of old Mac SE's that I bought that still have the original drives from the late 80's that are, knock on wood, still motoring along. I can't really speak to how good the AMD chips were back in the early 90's, but I do know that the Athlon I bought in 2001 blew the doors off the Intel chips at the time. All in all, good points. I suppose that with Apple, you paid for everything up front, but then you ran the risk of being locked into the hardware. With a PC, you could spend a bit here, a bit there, and for a while have a machine that evolved until it just couldn't anymore.

@@raydeen2k I was a gamer back in the late 80's and on myself. Duke Nukkem 3d, Wolf 3d, Doom, Quake, Unreal Tourn., I played them all on a Dos and/or Windows machine. From the S3 GPU, to the First Voodoo cards, I had them all. I just had no use for Apple even though the GUI was better. I much prefer Apple now since I mostly don't game and when I do, I have Win 7 Pro in a VM on my Late 2013 Retina Quad i7 , the WEI is 7.1 inside the VM.( 2 cores, 8gb ram, 1GB Video ram GT 750m video card ) I can't run new games but I can run anything 5 years old or older. Back in the 90's AMD was about 10% faster than the Intel CPU's and cost less. ( They had higher clock speeds Example the 386 Intel maxed at 33 mhz, it was 40mhz on the AMD ) From the 286 up AMD was faster, until Intel found speed magic with the Core Duo series in 2006, Intel has led the way in pure speed since but AMD has great speed for the $$$ here lately. I never played Diablo but none of the FPS I used or sold ever had both versions in one disc. I had a friend who worked at EB and he was able to take games homes to play. They had a shrink wrap machine to make them look new again. I had a CD Burner ( very expensive back then ) so I made copies and we would play via LAN at my office. ( to play online required different serial numbers for all the installs, not so for LAN play.) I don't remember a single one of them having Mac and Dos versions. For the most part AAA games didn't get ported to Apple ever or 2-4 years later if they did. I didn't use Apple back then so I don't know. I just know the specs since I have worked on every model of machine from the G3 up and some of the older Performa series and such. There are 2 places here that still use OS 9 based hardware for specialized machines that cost new car prices to replace. ( both are running G4 towers in classic mode in 10.4.11 to run OS 9 ) The good ol days in Computers. When a .28 dot pitch Color 1024X768 monitor cost $400 or you could go all out for a Sony .25 dot pitch 15" Flat CRT for $600. When 9 pin and 24 pin printers were around and then the HP Deskjet 500 came out, or the 500c that added color. I knew someone that still had one that was working, or at least around 5-6 years ago. Those were the days when stuff was built to last. The IBM XT case that weighted 20 lbs with a huge power supply with the on switch on the side that also weighted 10 lbs. Damn , I am old.......

@@chrisbatson8748 Old? You and me both. :) I'm actually in the OS X/Linux camp now (I have one Windows box running 8.1 for games, but not really AAA titles) and have become a bit of a collector of older machines. Actually, I tell a lie about the Windows box. I have several much older Windows PCs running DOS 3.2, 5, Win 3.1, 95, 98, 2000 and XP but mostly to run vintage software. On the Mac side, I have the older SE's, a few iBooks; two clamshells (Blueberry and Tangerine), one white G3, two white G4's (one running Lubuntu 16.04), a 17" Powerbook running 10.4/Ubuntu MATE 16.04, an iMac G3 (Grape), a PowerPC G3, a Quicksilver G4, G4 and Intel Mac Minis, a black MacBook, white 2008 and unibody 2009 Macbooks, an 09 MBPro and an 09 iMac with an i7 and a 2TB HD (which is damn near full) and a slew of Linux laptops. And two fairly mint Apple II's, a C64, a Timex Sinclair 1000, and my very first computer, an Atari 400. I haven't powered on the 400 in years (keep meaning to dig it out), but the other dinosaurs still run like the day they came off the factory floor. Most of all that was either free or found at really reduced prices. I often refer to my basement as The Ancient Computer Burial Ground. Shit's old, but I love it. I will say this though, as much as I can and do shit on Windows, the classic Mac OS was as fragile as a glass menagerie. I'd worked with them a bit in the 90's at the printing shop and until I got some of the older machines, I'd forgotten all about the many, many times that I had to rebuild the desktop, fix damaged resource forks, rebuild the font suitcase, reboot the entire system because a program didn't behave nicely and give control back to the Finder....oy vey. OS X was a godsend to the Apple world. But being able to play 'Happyweed' during a lunch break made it all worthwhile. :D Now I just need to get a classic Mac that's capable of color and also slow enough to be able to run that damn program properly...
