I noticed that Starlight has an interesting ability of becoming friends with characters that the Mane Six specifically DIDN'T become friends with instantly. Like Discord, Thorax (Twilight had to be convinced by Spike), Maud, and most of all, Trixie. Perhaps because all those people have some sort of uninviting past. The Mane Six members all have their faults, but they had relatively emotionally-struggle-free pasts. Bonding over personal problems is a way for many to make the truest friendships.

Personally, I think that in Maud Pie, Pinkie DID learn that she couldn't force a friendship to appear, but she learned that she couldn't force her FRIENDS to form a friendship with Maud when they have very little in common. I think what she did learn was that she can't force Maud and Starlight to become friends immediately when they already were at their OWN pace and without her interference.

I absolutely loved it. Maud is an interesting contrast to basically everything in the show, and she's one of the few ponies always wearing clothes. I find it insightful to see characters like her to develop my own characters.

This is by far my favorite episode so far this season. It's freaking season 7 and they are still delivering fresh ideas! If they keep this momentum going, who knows it may be my favorite. Throw in something as epic as COTLM and i'm sold. After Starlights redemption she has become "the normal pony," introduced into a brand new world that she isn't accustomed to. In a way she's a character we can connect with. Near the end of the episode when Pinkie confronted Starlight about Maude missing, Starlight basically repeated verbatim why she likes Maude, and for the Maude fans out there its pretty much the way we feel about her. In a world of sunshine, happiness, and joy, Maude is the the antithesis to all of that. And that's why we love her.

Season 5 is still my favorite; not because of COTLM or because of Slice of Life but because of Amending Fences; which is my favorite episode of the entire series. But, if they keep going this might end up as my second favorite season of the series. Spike's been a great character, Flurry got character development (despite being a baby), Maud moved to (near) Ponyville). Celestia had some character development in the premiere; ect extra.

ATTENTION EVERYONE: After consideration of various factors, I decided to go ahead and react to episode 5, which aired today on the Treehouse network in Canada. I opted to do this because A) I was informed that this episode did not suffer from any censorship, and B) a full episode being released early was likely to drastically increase the chance of me seeing spoilers, such as show clips, fan art, and fan comics. However, in the past, Hasbro has not been friendly to reactions to early episode airings, hitting them with worldwide blocks. As such, in order to respect their copyrights and release schedule, I will not be uploading my reaction to episode 5 until next Saturday, after the episode has officially aired on Discovery Family in the US. That said, I'd just like to let everyone know that I did very much enjoy the new episode, and can't wait to share my thoughts on it with you all. See you next weekend!

This is really weird for me, because I usually look on porpouse for the typical low_level spoilers (like writters, main character, guest star, sinopsis) on the week before the airing of such episode [to be ready in case BigJim, the writter or the story editor post something on Twitter]. But in this case (for a combination of personal reasons and a bit of lazyness), I got here UNSPOILED of *that* FiM episode without even trying (after the reverse happened to me: _the fiasco of COTLM [S5E18]_ I stopped trying, as living under a rock with no WiFi is not fun). So, THANKS Applegeek for the headsup, as I was not aware. -> Looking it right now for a tv capture of the canadian stream.

Networks in some other countries have even more strict content filtering than the US does, so there are times where certain bits of dialogue are muted, or possibly even scenes cut due to specific dialogue or visuals that are deemed inappropriate for young children to watch. I just didn't want to watch an episode that had been modified in any such way.

I am so happy that Maud moved to Ponyville, I was actually expecting them to make some sort of excuse for her to go to that other place, but nope she's staying in Ponyville! Love it; especially since Maud is one of my favorite characters in the entire series. You know this episode has made me really appreciate Pinkie Pie more, she's really calmed down a lot; which I know is a weird thing to say concerning this episode, but she rarely acts this crazy and random. The only reason she acted this crazy and random was because she wanted her sister Maud to move to Ponyville, so yeah this episode has made me really appreciate how calm she's gotten compared to how she was in season 1 and 2. You have so much you can call back on, so much that makes this a developed, living world. It makes it feel more real, more authentic, just, more like what at their best stories should feel like, windows to another world.

About the "Countess" Coloratura´s reference: a) This is an alternate timeline were S5E24 never happened [caused by that one of Starlight Glimmer´s rays that missed Twilight and continued going down in the last timejump WITH the Sonic Rainboom...] b) Rarity was cautious enough about giving Maud a precise identification of what (who) she was talking about [as otherwise Maud may had interpreted _"a new album made by a singer who has a "coloratura range"_ ; while by adding the "Countess" she establishes it is about an specific person that Maud may not know]. -> This may be also a callback on the previous episode he wrote were Rainbow Dash could had said "Spit Fire... you know, the leader of the aerial team Wonderbolts".

This is my favorite episode of the season so far, which is a considerable feat since All Bottled Up was so wonderful too! Starlight making friends with a bunch of the secondary characters, and thus getting those characters some development of their own? Good direction in my opinion, and it supports the underlying theme that not EVERY single pony is going to have their best friend be one of the Mane 6, even though they're the Archons of Friendship/etc. It's fresh and it's real and I love it.

Great points overall, and yeah spot on. Pinkie Pie DID help, and Maud DID need her help to make friends. She needed Pinkie to give her that initial push to meet somepony new, get her over that intial hurdle. Pinkie just kept going past that way to far. But it she was needed/ So love that bit and how well done it was. Yes Pinkie was annoying, yes she should have known better, but that was the point. Her excitement over Maud living nearby, and desperation to get her to stay, plus wanting Maud to be happy and have a close friend? Yeah it's like a perfect storm for making Pinkie slip into over drive like that. The rock taking over the world... might depend on what 'the right rock' is and be more a hypothetical. But you are right about the subtle hinting the staff does, however I'm less sure that was one, as I am with the cowbell thing. That on it's own, just a funny joke.. HOWEVER, given they name dropped Grogar last issue, and his shtick was being a powerful sorcerer who channeled his magic through a bell around his neck... Add in the comics, which this arc is supposed to tie more into the show then ever before and be based on stuff scripted out for Season 7.. and the current arc involves a pony going around trying to erase all record of certain periods in Equestrian history because he claims there is an ancient, powerful Evil that is returning which he is trying to erase from history..... Well again, That's exactly what Grogar was in G1.. a powerful evil whose city faded away only to return later.... This is looking pretty heavy on the foreshadowing... Speaking of setting things up... you can actually see some kites in starlight's room in the S6 finale. So epic use of call backs. I REALLY want to know the behind the scenes story for that. Was loving Kites a thing they always had in mind for her and just never found a way to address directly? Did they notice them in the finale and work them into the script (unlikely giving time issues) or, did they write this script early enough they were able to add the kites in while animating the finale as set up? (Also saw another comment that made a great point.. Starlight loves kites? Well.. she does enjoy being the pony holding onto the strings.)

It's kind of fun that if you go back to previous episodes (including some from last season) when there are shots of Starlight's room, you can occasionally see kites sitting around. So kudos to the writers for either setting that character trait up beforehand or picking up the detail and actually putting it to use. There were a lot of things like that in this episode, honestly. Maud referencing rocks/gems with unusual properties that can give you power? Like, say, the alicorn amulet or the Dragon Lord's scepter? Starlight actually directly addressing Boulder as if he's a character himself, as opposed to most characters just kind of referring to him when talking to Maud? Referencing Maud's admitted love for standup comedy that we learned about during Discord's antics at the Grand Galloping Gala? Callbacks to locations like Ghastly Gorge and the gem cave? I don't know why, but I just love little tidbits like that. Also, Pinkie trying (and failing) to make use of the old "characters bond while trapped together" trope cracked me up. The only thing here that got a little grating was that they pushed Pinkie's antics a bit too far, but at least it's better than some cases in the series since there was definitely a legit reason this time. Pinkie is always a little excitable, but she had a genuine reason to be invested in this situation, and it's not exactly unusual for people to go a little overboard when they're desperate. Given how Pinkie basically hangs on Maud's every word and action whenever we see them get together, it kind of makes sense that she'd come off a bit too strong when she was trying to convince her to stay in Ponyville. So I'd give that a pass compared to some other episodes where characters just seem to get their most annoying traits pushed to the Nth degree because they needed an excuse to push a certain moral/lesson, and their in-universe explanation is basically "Well, it's because...um...reasons." Anyway, great reaction/commentary. Here's to hoping that we'll get to see Maud and Trixie meet and remember each other from Trixie's time on the rock farm.

Hmm, I never noticed the kite stuff in past episodes, will keep an eye out for that whenever I watch older episodes again. But yeah, that is really good build-up. As for Pinkie, yes, she was way over the top this time, classic storytelling technique of pushing an issue to the point of absurdity in order to make a point, far from the first time they've done it in this show. I still say, though, that it wasn't that far from reality. People do some crazy things for the people they love.

It's from the episode "Magic Duel." When she's talking about how she was ruined by her humiliation in Ponyville during her first appearance, she talks about how she even had to work on a rock farm and it shows a clip of Pinkie's dad pointing her towards a pile of rocks.

One of the two Muffins in this episode was a changeling. Given the behavior of the one coming INTO Ponyville (through a road passing through the empty field for kites); I would say it was the other one in the middle of Ponyville [looking at asparagus with Daisy]. -> If I was an smart, wise and mischievous changeling I would only take the form of a pony I know it is either trapped or out of town for a while... maybe after you send her away on a random delivery... If it was Chrysalis, then she is doing the same as Starlight did through S5 [taking notes of how overpower/trigger her target, what she likes and what she loves...]. Now I had to rewatch S7E02 again... in a big 1080p screen... very closely.

This episode was amazing, a nice way to keep the gravy train of good episodes flowing. Applegeek, you and I had the same thought about Pinkie being forceful of having Maud make friends(referring to the episode "Maude Pie"). Although, I can understand that she only wanted Maud to be nearby in Ponyville; Pinkie was just going about it the wrong way. Besides that, Pinkie was very amusing in here, with her attempts to convince Maud to stay in Ponyville; especially when she shouts at Tank("Don't let Rainbow see you doing that.") That plot twist with Starlight and Maud in the past blew my mind though.😆

That thought did occur to me as well, but it looks more like a star than a kite, and the star trail or whatever you call it looks more like aurora borealis, a.k.a. the northern lights. Maybe some day we'll get to see how she actually got her cutie mark, because we haven't seen that yet.

I think the thing with Rarity and and Maud is that for Rarity it's her magic, while for Maud it's her character. (Think about it would actually mean that Rarity's magic should have picked up, but well...=) And I think you are right. Sometimes all the passion is less exiting if you can't share it with someone. And like you said. A friene not always has to share the exact same interests, but also except you for who you are (although their has to be common liking =)

Actually, this episode didn't focus on Starlight at all. She was merely an add-on, which I think confirms she's more of a main character now, if that makes any sense. ...Which it doesn't. Only I don't know how to better explain myself. XD Oh yes, and Maud Pie is officially my hero now. XD

Cool. :) Also, I really like the new direction Season 7 is taking in focusing more on background/recurring/supporting characters, because really, the Mane Six have had as much development on their own as they possibly can have. The fact that the show is making good use of their expansive cast shows there's plenty of new material up ahead. :D

Seems each new season needs at least one episode with Maud in it, and this one was pretty great! Maud's finally got her rocktorate, she's living adjacent to Ponyville, and she's made friends with Starlight! Starlight even made Maud smile _twice_ in one episode! That's definitely a record! Pinkie's behavior was kinda grating, and kinda reminiscent of how Twilight was butting in on Starlight trying to make friends with Trixie, or trying to force friendships between Maud and the rest of the 6 in Season 4, but no one can deny she had her heart in the right place. She just wants the best for her sister, after all. Other notes: poor Rarity, being told the gems she collects aren't rare at all (nice going, Dr. Pie, lol), and Starlight's adorkable passion for kites. =)
