Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Long ago, we sidedressed with NH3. eventually we moved to fall and spring preplant application, and eventually went back to sidedressing. It was much more economical than 28 at the time, but a PITA to work with. Now there is almost no NH3 used in our area and almost all N is sidedressed 28 or 32. Yields are better with less total N applied than when we used NH3 and it is MUCH easier. Prices also got a lot closer and that reduced the economic incentive to use NH3. I would never go back to that, still have memories of pulling a 5 knife rig with a Case 400. Modern equipment is so much nicer and safer. It is surprising that this is a new process in that area, in western IN and eastern IL N has been knifed in for 60-70 years.

Zach, I work for a dealership that carries J&M applicators and we have sold probably 20 applicators this year. If you like it and are interested in buying one I would recommend the 6026 model. It has a larger tank and duels to better handle all that weight. I would also recommend running it ISO through your John Deere 2630 or whatever screen you have.

Thanks for another great video Zach. Most interesting and enjoyable. Zach, you are doing great with the 28 percent nitrogen. You said first time doing that. Here in central Iowa is pretty common. Believe you will be pleased with the results. Nice piece of equipment you have to apply the nitrogen. Seems to work great without any problems. Great. Believe you will do some next year again. Gives good results. Nice your daughter rides with you. She will always remember that as an adult years down the road. Nice you parked the tractor and did burgers 🍔 with the family. Good deal. Nice to see your farmstead all cleaned up. Good to see. Your cleanup company did a great job. About it I guess. Thanks to Becky for editing. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks for everything Zach. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.

2001 and 2002 I applied 600 acres each summer of 28% with an open station 1650 Oliver diesel pulling a Broyhill pull type 500 gallon sprayer set on 30 inch row spacing with drops. To get a good cover, Dad (or Grandpa) followed right behind with a 12 row cultivator. No GPS/Autosteer or rate control (just speed, pressure, and the right sized orifice). I was always within 1 to 3 pounds (usually to the high side) of my goal of 110 pounds. The corn REALLY flourished. I think you will like the results especially with that nice set-up.

Dropping liquid nitrogen is still the most prefered application method here in Europe - and VERY widely used. But mostly the side dressing is done for corn already while planting with solid fertilizer.

Amazing how well Chrome &/or Stainless works with sticky soil, almost like it was made for it! 😂 I think that Red Headed guy sells that stuff in your area, or is that the Company named for him. I don’t think some realize the expense involved. Our local price for liquid nitrogen equates to 4.50 a gallon from the port in Wilmington NC. That’s approximately $215 per acre just to side dress. It’s adds up in a real hurry.

Really surprised you didn't run ISO for a brand new rig. In NW indiana we have moved to split spoon feeding our 28. Put 60lbs preplant with weed and feed, planter puts on 10lbs, 80 pounds side dress then 40lbs Y dropping at tassle. It's a lot of passes but it's really pulled up yield on lighter soils and brought up field averages.

Zach, I love how you changed things around at the end of this video how you said till we see you next time and your montage you did. I really liked it as it was different from the normal ending you usually have. I can't imagine how tough it was trying to get the crop in the ground this year and then get hit by the storm and all the damage you had, that's when you find out how good your insurance really is and sorry to say it's not usually good enough. But with that storm did or do your kids have any after effects from the storm like when it looks like it's going to storm or rain do they get nervous and hang out by your side of by Becky as back in the 70's I had a second cousin whose son went through a storm and tornado yards away and saw there Morton building totally disappeared in front of him and his dad and the following week they got hit again a storm around 7pm but this time it was a 30' grain bin which had gotten empty weeks before that held 20,000 bushels. Have you been in contact with the National Weather Service to see how high the winds were as they usually have records or videos of it, and was it the same one that hit Larson Farms and was there a path that you could follow between the two of you if it was the same storm or winds that hit the two of your farms. Did your dad and mom have any damage at there place from the same storm? What has Randy master pipe layer been up to did he get all his crops in the ground in time or did he have to switch to beans cuz of the ground to wet. With the ground being muckey like you have said many times do you try to v-rip your ground to break up the hardpan every4-5 years. Are you or your son going to do any racing over the 4th July weekend and have you ever raced down at Brandon SD at Hussett raceway or at Jackson Minnesota,I guess Tony Stewart has gone or goes to Jackson Minnesota . Well have a great Holiday weekend and be safe and will see you on the next video soon. What has Jim been up to lately as I haven't seen him in your videos much lately?

Last year I broadcast half the fert on all the acres and disked in. The other half got put on as follows... I put the other half on half my acres with the planter but spaced it out 6" off center of the row. The remaining half got liquid with drops at V8. The liquid at V8 corn got way taller and looked way better as a corn plant but,!!! The half I put on with fert off center of the row yielded 1 pound better test weight. I didn't see a gain in bpa though. Kind of strange... As expected same amount of fert same bpa. I like the better test weight though and so did the elevator.

Get your pilots license active and get the silver iodine flares, and go on some 🌨️ seeding flights. And put a heavy outlets in for a plasma cutter for the next bin removal to chop it up some, to help fit into a rolloff dumpster.
