My back aches for you. After restoring dozens of Historic properties on the East Coast for the Park service and private foundations, i'll tell you that stone work done properly is THE most satisfying because of it's value to human comfort and Historic feel and function. I just sold my 1799 farm in Maine after restoring the house to Colonial condition and moved back to Virginia. I miss being able to work after 45 years of the Carpenter's love/hate relationship with building, but now i can go visit these places and see for myself MY Contribution to Restoration in general. I'd rather live in one of these lovely homes that a brand new stick built monster full of chemicals and the expense associated with maintaining them.

I never tire of watching this video .. especially after I have mostly finished my fireplace..which was the reason I found this guy!!! Mine is almost as beautiful as his!!! We have things in common.... obsession!!! For sure! Also we both are using stones that someone else has used before! Whenever I am working with used materials I cannot help but think of the guys that touched the stones a long time ago. My fireplace has old paving stones...maybe 200 years..with tool marks! They were dug up when new sewer pipes were being installed... it's the little things!!!!

I’ll be doing a video for the first of the year at some point. Hoping to share for pictures I took. I have one that I think you are going to love! It’s a picture of the stone work in the loft. On both the right and left there are shadows of men dressed in 1800s clothing. Complete with hats and suit jackets. It looks like they are inspecting my work.

There is a reason tractors have dual brakes. When one wheel slips (or slips more) press that brake to transfer power to the other wheel. You can walk out of slippery spots by transferring power back and forth. Love your cabin! Awesome job.

Been cuttin and layin stone material for close to 40 yrs. and I say "if you like it, I love it" I'm sure you did enough research to know how to build what you want. Looks great. What I really like is your lamp collection. A hobby of mine for many yrs. Your hammer is what we used to refer to as a "Rifters" hammer. Keep up the good work. Nice video.

I believe the arch was started by Greece architecture and adopted by Romans and other civilizations later on. The Romans basically took from the Grecian and made everything just bigger. By the way, I feel and appreciate the pain of your back, just looking at those stones. May the Lord protect your back. I am totally impressed.

It's a real privilege to see someone make such a nice, well constructed fireplace. It's looks really authentic and adds a very homely feature to the cabin. I wish we had more proper old cabins here in the UK as I would almost definitely live in one and if it didn't have a fireplace then this is the sort of thing I'd build. Very nice. I live in southwestern Pennsylvania also. My house is an old farmhouse built in 1850. It is an old colonial style house with a chimney at each end. I have one fireplace. But the fireplace on the opposite end of the house has been covered over with drywall. The stonework goes from the basement to the 2nd floor. It's going to be a big job to restore it. I'm inspired. I really hope to be able to use it next year.

@@logcabinlifestyle Yep I came specifically to see your fireplace build, but after this one I skipped ahead to a much more recent video (why you have the fireplace + cookstove together) It also gave me a big smile to see your full grown dog - you mentioned at one point in this video that you had just gotten your new puppy !! Just couldn't resist pausing the video to comment on the "Red Green Show" angle, I'm still chuckling about that ... Anyway thanks for the great content ! I'm considering building something like this myself, as part of an enclosed gazebo in our backyard. Very windy a lot of the time where we are, and I'm hoping for a way of enjoying a fire outside when it wouldn't be practical otherwise. Wintertime also !

40 years later the flagstone veneer outside my Dad's cabin needed some attention. It's high altitude in the freeze and thaw Rockies. The mortar he used (which is fine inside) had started to sand out and errode away outside. After consulting some friends we decided to just use a water proofing on the mortar instead of a poly product so that it didn't change the look of the stone. So far 15 years later it's stopped the errosion!! Since the motar you're using is so tender you might want to do the same on the outside wall of your beautiful! fireplace. Excellent work!💜
