Been doing stucco for 15 years and a professional with the tools mud etc, and when I went to learn brick and stone I found that the masons were just straight haters and knew with a few tips I'd make them look dumb so thank you for this, sometimes the details is all a guy needs.

I used the same type (dry stacked) of cultured stone on a fireplace wall in my living room. About 10' wide, 2' deep. I'd never done this before and it was a trip. 54 hours very well spent. I used 13 real stones from the property and sprinkled them around. Most guests find 2 or 3, that's how real they look.

Two things! First l like using a mortar board for easier access rather than a bucket. Second l spread my stone out so l can see the piece l need. Piling them up like that chips n scratches the finish off them

Ive found buzzing the edges to knock off the manufacture slag makes them fit tighter and nicer. Not so much of a problem with this ledgestone stuff but the square stack needs it for good tight fit.

cement board and thinset actually does work ... also set your cill's up before hand then lay the stone up to it ... dye thinset or mortar to match color of stone ... few tips for guys use the grinder on a cutting table not free hand can snatch to easy

Can you reseal cultured stone to give it that wet look again? What do you recommend? Our house is 20!yrs old I feel like the stone needs resealed. Definitely like the look of it when it gets when from hose or rain. It is faded.

Yes go to your local hardware store pick up masonry sealer you could spray it on they have different sheen so get the one you want. I don't recommend gloss finish though.

I've watched other guys install that fake stone but they didn't utilize the smalls the way you did. It looks great. I think You Tubers like you are giving Hollywood a run for the money. I'm 68 years old and living in a retirement home and obviously I'm not going to be installing any fake stone but this is much more interesting and even captivating than anything out of Tinsel Town lately. I can't stand (so called) secular TV nowadays. Too much almost nudity, nasty talk and sexuality (which I think is one of the worst things) on the TV nowadays. I hardly ever turn mine on anymore but I think I'm going blind from looking at this small screen. Great work. Later😎🇺🇸🐘

Good job. A couple pointers for you. Rather then cut with a grinder go get a couple pair of horse hoof snip. Attach 1/2 gas pipe to handles trust me it works great. If you still like your grinder make sure to never have a straight cut especially with ledgestone. you can take the back of a stone and rough up and round the edge of that stone you cut. I did fireplaces 80% of the time so i used a grout bag to finish up because people get so close.

Do you ever wet the wall when your laying on dry scratch coat? We use a pump up sprayer and mist the wall. Usually only do it in summer when its hot or in direct sun. Keeps the mud from drying too fast and losing that suction but any DIYers don't over do it or you'll watelog the wall and nothing will stick.

been doing this is it came out in the 70 i alsway start fromm the top my scratch coat is the same color of my groung so when i put my stone on i use my mortar as the same colro of my grouth this way o dont have to come back and grout it and there is no color on my stones save a lot of labor

I'm looking for ideas to give my house some curb appeal and also cover my ugly and in some areas chipped slab foundation. Maybe 1 foot or so high around 3 sides of the house. Would this be an economical solution or a money pit and a nightmare? Any suggestions are most welcomed. Also great job, building looks great.

Weep holes are just a little gadget that goes down at the bottom of the stone to let moisture out.. We typically don't install them

I laid brick, block and stone for 30 years . Never once did I lay a manufacturer’s or fake stone. I’m really intrigued because it doesn’t appear to save any labor versus just laying real stone from the foundation up. ?? If you laid real brick on part of the job how would the two line up?? Real brick is about 4 inches out and that fake stuff looks about 2 1/2 any thoughts on how they could meet on a wall ?

I’ve seen some of that fake stone priced at double the price per square foot as real brick . I think a good mason good lay those walls faster with real brick and similar for real stone .

Little tip ……I like to work from top down, 1- u know for sure its not sitting on top of a stone and its a better build now 2- they stay clean no mud will fall down and get on your stone like that happens from working bottom to up, trust me, after doing this for so many years I seen it all and nothing worse trying to wire brush dry mortar smears off stone to collect the final check, Start from top and work down, your welcome

First, any actual prep doesn't occur until about 8-1/2 minutes in (of a 13 minute video) and then it doesn't show anything on the wrapping/lath install just the mudding of the scratch coat. Quikcrete has a much better video of the entire process. Thanks for trying.

No flashing going over the sill? Moisture gets behind the stone veneer, freezes and pops off the stone.

Yes there is flashing there It was put on afterwards on top of the sill.. just as you said

I dont think the flashing is needed with watertable sills there designed to flow the water away from the wall and have an edge on bottom lip that water drips off of ...

Just getting ready to attempt my first veneer job. Already have the veneer and bought some quikcrete bonding agent for a poured wall. I put the scratch coat on the bonding agent surface , right? Then copy what you did? You already saved me a headache, cause I thought I’d need to put spacers between the rocks.

I wish titles to videos would be more specific about Stone vs Phony Stone. Personally, I don't consider phony stone to be content that can accurately be used as a means to teach stone masonry. The response I might get is that it's veneer stone. Quite a bit of people assume that the workflow is the same for all types of veneer work, but it's not. As an example, I've worked with granite, courtside, and right now I'm working with black basalt. These stones are significantly harder to cut than the precast cement that all phony stone is composed of. Furthermore, phony stone is a bit of a joke. It's got something like 10 mm of rock textured color, in the attempt to make it look like a stone, but it's not even comparable. It's a cheap product with cheap longevity. I've seen plenty of phony stones pop off of a wall and land on a car's windshield or something, over the course of even just a few months after it's installation, as well. It also weathers that rock color and texture extremely quickly, in comparison to actual stone. It may be cheaper for the client. But I anticipate that within 50 years or so, people are going to wise up on this inferior product, and in the end, it'll hurt the Stone Masonry trade. It'll give Stone Masonry a stigma that "it doesn't last long". Leading to people being unsure if it actually adds equity to their property. And seeing as most people aren't aware of the and the differences between the two, this seems highly likely. I sometimes get clients comming over to me saying "Oh wow. You mean Stone Masons still use chisels?" And yes, they do...

We are putting manufactured stone ledger over old painted stucco house front in the Arizona desert. We have been told we need to add concrete adhesive to the S- Type mortar. We are doing an arch which would hang upside down. Do we need this adhesive? Thank you so much for your videos!

Kate all it does is allow it to be a little stickier it's not that expensive if it gives you peace of mind to put it..but we never use it.. being painted it may be an issue it may not stick to the concrete.

In other videos I noticed they wet the scratch coat before installing. Should it be left dry so the water drawing (towards the SC) process you explained in this video will work better?

I never wet the scratch coat.. I don't know why other Masons say to do that I know when it rains at night and we go there in the morning and it's wet the stones do not stick as well Hope that helps please subscribe!

If you live anywhere with even the slightest freeze thaw cycle do not put stack stone on the outside of the home. And I always start at the top and work down to keep the stone as clean as posible.

No dura rock will not work you stone will fall right off in months or years with freeze and thaw seasons and your joints will crack. Guy is an idiot who told you, u can use dura rock. Only applications you can use it is for a stacked stone interior.
