See how the numbers work on the dials to measure run-out or out-of-round. The idea works in fractions or decimals, metric or inch-based as well.

Thank you for the very in depth explanation of using this, and how each part of the dial indicator is used and read. People like me (woodworker) who are not engineers or machinists use these to set the accuracy on our tools. But I had never seen, or used one prior to learning this trade. So this was very helpful! Awesome explanation!

Thanks for watching. Woodworking tools could be checked for axle, blade, or bit runout to minimize chatter marks and fiber tearout. One example is here, although shot on a demolition not a precision tool kzbin.info/www/bejne/jISToXyFhqqsbK8

So if I am trying to find 4 mm BTDC on my engine (to set the ignition timing), and I am using an Imperial dial indicator, a depth of 4 mm would equal .1575" . So .1575" would be roughly the "16" mark on the outer dial. Correct?
@apprenticemath
@apprenticemath 5 жыл бұрын
Not even close. After 15 full turns "75" mark on the outboard dial. (Sorry about the delay) Nice Trabi.
@Ricky-mouser
@Ricky-mouser 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct that 4mm equals .1575". Drop the last 5 for this is called 1/2 thousandths or tho for short. So you have 157 thousandths. 1 turn is a 100 then go 57 more

Thanks for this video, really informative. I had a question. I just purchased a dial bore gauge but mine is only half and inch. It rotates 5 times for 1/2 an inch. Do i read it the same? it has 0-0.25 on the face. Any help would be appreciated. thank you.
@apprenticemath
@apprenticemath 9 жыл бұрын
Favio Escudero In principle it reads the same. The following makes sense in terms of manufacturing and gearing an instrument: 1 full indicator needle rotation on the face must advance the tip the maximum distance printed on the dial face. If you have a dial face 0 - 1/4 inch, 4 full turns must make 1 inch of travel. Check it, does your have this 4:1 gearing built into?
@escuderofavio
@escuderofavio 9 жыл бұрын
apprenticemath My gauge is half an inch unlike yours that's an inch. The guage is just like yours on the video. However, as explained, mine reads .001 graduation and it has 0-.25. Now, if my math is right, is .001 times 100 equals to .1 and .1 times 5 turns (which it only does) equals to .5 (half inch as the needle). Do i read this gauge at .001 graduation?? sorry for the quesitons just condused. I bought it from amazon and it indicated it had graduaiton of .0005; however, when i got it this was not so on the gauge. Thanks.
@apprenticemath
@apprenticemath 9 жыл бұрын
Favio Escudero You are right, that`s how it`s geared, that`s how its read. Now about the 0.0005 - the painted marks are at 0.001, measurements can be taken directly when the needle is aligned with the mark. The precision is 0.001 When the needle is between 2 painted marks, you estimate the last digit to be 0.0005, round up or down. Say 0.003 plus a little is either 0.0030 or 0.0035 Or almost 0.157 is 0.1570 or 0.1565 Here is my video on significant and estimated digits kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnelo3ZrjbJ3hZo

I know it’s been 4 yrs since you asked your question. Hopefully you finally got the correct answer. If not here it is. You have a 0 to a quarter inch indicator. So one revolution is .05. Next revolution is .10 3rd rev is .15 4th rev is .20and final 5th rev is .25 So The last rev is 25/100 which reduced down is a quarter of an inch. Hope this helped
