Idrive system update for all BMW. How to update BMW idrive navigation system.

In this vidoe I will walk you through how to update your BMW idrive system in 3 simple steps.
1. Locate VIN Number. (which I will show you how).
2. Download Software from BMW using your computer to USB stick.
3. Install Software to your idrive system.

I have read that you need to unpack the bin file that you download from BMW update website before you connect your flash drive to the vehicle? Says it will not work unless you unpack- which is almost impossible to figure how to do that...are you sure if you connect your flash drive with the bin file from BMW that this will work without unpacklng that file?

Does doing this add a sat nav to your screen display? I’ve got a 13 plate 1 series and wondering if I have to take it to bmw for them to put the navigation onto the car or will this do it?

If you did not have sat Nav, this method will not give you sat Nav. Updating your idrive helps with connectivity, removes glitches and for those who have satnav, they will get Morden version.

Thanks for the info, with your help I've managed to update my idrive on my 4 series. I've got one question, how do I get my idrive welcome animation to show on-screen before it goes straight onto the main menu page when I start the vehicle. Is there a setting for that?

Well done for updating successfully. Idrive will only animate when it’s boot up but not every time your start your engine. If you want to animate different logo such as m performance, you will need to code it and I have a dedicated video for that in this channel using Carly app and dongle.

By following your video, I updated the 2018 software update to link my latest Samsung phone to the vehicle (1 minute to update). This saved me £300 by not going to BMW garage for software update and the notification message disappeared.

The update will give you your current idrive number most recent version. It will not change your idrive 6 to 7 as example.

Hi, I don’t think 2013 is supported but no harm trying. This update helped Bluetooth connectivity, the map shows 3D building on iconic buildings such as London eye & London Bridge etc.

This software update helps most of data such as map etc but not entire sure of SOS. There are no harm in updating software. My suggestion is to contact your local BMW if you haven't already since your is still under warranty.

Hi Danny, Have you previously had Bluetooth capabilities? Some Older BMWs does not support Bluetooth music. My sibling has 1 series 2012 and it does not have Bluetooth music play.

Hi, no this update will not give you GPS. You can purchase GPS from BMW connect website if your vehicle is compatible. This update is for connectivity issues and GPS road updates for those who already have gps built in.

To install satnav if it did not come with it from manufacturer, you will need to purchase as ad on from BMW website if your idrive is compatible. I would thought all BMW from 2011 should have satnav from baseline.

If your vehicle did not come with manufacturer Bluetooth full capability then updating idrive software would not gain you extra features. When you download new software it asks your VIN so it knows the capabilities

Have you attempted updating software following process mentioned in this video? To be honest anything related to navigation, I use BMW connected app where I send message as test to the car and it navigates me. F07 is 5 series right? If yes it should work. Have you formatted your usb correctly? If your vehicle idrive is up to date, it will not install new one.

@@APTechs Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, the F07 is 5 series, GT 535i. I just purchased the car a week ago and the navigation is grayed out. It has tried on occasion to try and connect but never successful and goes away. BMW says the system was changed in 2016(?) I believe which is why it isn't connecting so I'm sure it isn't updated. It's just that there is nothing on the USB drive so it seems. When I manually save the file (as it won't download), it says there's 8,270 kb but when it didn't work and I deleted the file it said 0 bytes. Confused!

@AP Tech as far as I know it's fitment correctly. My only options for formatting is ex-fat and ntfs. I've tried both and neither works.

Where do you download the software from? Never mind I found it. It says that my vehicle is up to date and there is nothing to download. I have a 2018 x5 f15 and the sat radio/ navigation and carplay all quit working after I coded out the passenger seatbelt. I restored the backup and nothing. I used Carly.

You may have accidentally deleted the retrofit coding you had by restoring original. You can restore from Carly again if it saved a date on the ECU back to what it was. Alternatively you can get CarPlay from connect drive app if you have previously purchased this service.

Hello mate, I have a 60 reg F10 with Bluetooth telephone and navigation but no usb in the centre console but one in the glove box. There is a software update for my car but I don’t have a software update in my menu under settings. I can import driver profiles from the usb in the glove box but don’t see any software update in the settings menu even with the update file on a formatted usb stick. How do I know which software version my car is currently on? And how to update via glove box USB port pls? Tia

You can check current status software by checking in your idrive software section. The USB your using is fully empty and formatted to the correct file type? I don’t think USB port location has any impact as long as the port works. You can test it by playing usb music etc.

I can export and import driver profiles from the USB port with a usb stick. Just no software update tab in idrive settings menu...

I need help , my 2015 328i M Performance doesn't have maps or navigation. I have tried downloading updates from BMW into a flash drive ( well formatted) but nothing , I don't even have the "software upgrade" option available to click and when I go to maps it doesn't have a version so it looks like it didn't have any installed. Hi Randy, it’s strange for 2015 model not to have maps etc. Have you modified your idrive system? If it’s manufacturers idrive system, the process on this video should work if your idrive is not up date. Have you attempted contacting BMW for their thoughts why it does support maps etc.

This works great if you have the stock head unit. But I upgraded my CCC to a CIC and when I put my VIn in the site it tells me that my car is not available to upgrade. How the heck do I work around that?

@@dompowa6705 you have to search in the model of your car in various groups to find work around. I searched for months till I found a person that knew how to findangle idrive settings. Unfortunately I paid for the unit plus cables and there were some adapters missing to connect the combox to the Fibre so now my stereo sounds craptastic and I don't have Bluetooth which was the point of changing in the first place...

Idrive software uses your VIN to identify if software is available so changing the head unit will not help other than looking more slick.

Hi Paul, Have you formatted your usb to the correct format? If yes, then I can only assume your vehicle is up to date. Try formatting your usb to M.DOS Fat

@@APTechs Unfortunately didnt work. I don't get the option to format to M.DOS Fat as I'm on windows but I believe exFAT is the same. I have been told my iDrive needs to be reflashed or something

For the USB, does it have to be from BMW or any USB will work fine ?

That's strange. Did you visit BMW recently? They may have updated your idrive as part of routine.

If you have done coding, yes it will potentially reset everything. Do it your own risk

Hi Titomo, my BMW is hybrid and when I press ignition once it does not kill the power complete and it remains as standby. The aim here is turn off engine completely so ECU is rebooted.

Hi, I am assuming BMW may have discontinued updates for older generations. Try using different browser and let me know if it works?

I keep getting an error everytime i try. I have factory CIC filled 2010 E90 LCI. Map is the only version i can find in the menus dated 2010, so it has never been updated.

Can you use any USB drive?
