Down by the old mill stream. My mom, sister and I used to sing that song when we washed and dried dishes...happy precious memory❣️ What a spectacular location! My favorite sound is running water like at the end of this video. Another sound I love, if anyone cares is the sound of driving over gravel. It reminds me of visiting my grandmother in the country and I do mean country. Sylvania, Arkansas... more precious memories ❣️

Being a retired grist miller and water powered sawyer I would like to say that most burr stones from 18-19th century were made from quartzite and imported from France. Furthermore, they were ideal ballast in tall sailing ships. More modern burr stones are made from North Carolinian granite, not as durable but more affordable. And please know I’m proud to display my Chigg’s Army sticker on the rear window of our awesome Silverado. Hey Todd, stay awesome....

Sure was a very interesting mill site Chigg. Glad you and Todd got to check it out. I love old sites like that. The skill of the early pioneers was something else. Nice little centipede you found there. We were always told as kids to never mess with them because they are venomous. Glad you sent him on his way unharmed.

What I like about you, Chigg is your commentary as you explore. I've watched quite a few explorers over the last couple of years from UK and they may break and entry which can be exciting as long as they do it respectfully...but often they arnt speaking and telling the viewer what they are seeing. You explore for grown ups. BTW, have you done any detectoring in UK?

I wonder if there are any photos of the mill when it was still standing ? It / they would be great to see. I wonder if those iron mill pieces would be of value to a museum OR the local / state Historical Society ? If You guys didn't check the mill race, You might want to think abt a revisit, just saying. I have been a bottle collector since 1972 and always found that leaving "no stone unturned" eases my mind and saves my curiosity / decision from having to worry about a second trip back to a site. Like your posts, by the way.

Something for Todd - and maybe you. I knew a floor installer whose wife took a pair of his jeans, cut the back pockets off another old pair, and sewed them on the knees. He would stufff a piece of carpet pad into the pockets so he didn't need knee shoes. Maybe two layers of pad.

I am thinking that the lead was used as "packing" material to both fill in the "loose" gaps between metal and stone, AND, to also act as a "lubricant". Just a thought. And ONE OF THESE DAYS you are going to dig up "just a jar lid" that is going to have the glass jar full of coins in it!

I'm pretty sure that the channel running down the hill is actually a cut for a narrow gauge logging railway, and not a mill chase.
@AppalachianHistoryDetectives4 жыл бұрын
Jefferson Seaver there is a narrow gauge rail on the other side of the creek....
@jeffersonseaver8604 жыл бұрын
I still think it's a railway cut and not a mill chase. Logging tramways were generally short-lived and moved around. There could well have been roads on both sides of the creek, at the same time or different times. If I'm right, and you detect the cut, I'd expect you to find some spikes for nailing wooden rails to wooden ties. If it was a strap road, you'll find some short pieces of broken strap iron too.
