Aquael Turbo Filter 500 Unboxing

This filter has been intriguing me for a while. A 4w filter that claims to filter 150 litres. It is essentially a powerhead on a sponge filter which should give me much better water circulation for the new scape in my 50 litre Dennerle Scapers tank. This week I unbox it and work out how to hide it away in the tank, before I get down to scaping the tank. I'll do a review and update video of the filter in a future video.

use several of these, including the 2000 series. As for the 500 series I have it setup in a 80 liter tank. At first it was a lot of flow but I don’t think it would suit a 150 liter tank. Maybe for gouramies or a beta because they prefer a minimum of flow. I would say though, for a Betta in a 50 liter it would be too much flow, especially for the specimen with long fins. After a water change the filter has problems to get rid of the air in the motor head. Switch to max setting for a few seconds until it runs quietly again.

Got the 500 of these just done a review and on testing seachem matrix is a good media for extra chambers

Hope this is a useful unboxing for anyone considering buying this filter. What do you think to the 150 litre rating and how good a filter do you think this will prove to be? Have you already tried this model? Be interested to hear all your thoughts!

how are you liking this filter? i can't find a follow up video for it - thanks! also, if you are using the filter foam on the outside, how on earth do you remove the filter without all the particles and debris getting released into the tank as soon as you move it? i just tried removing it and all the crap it had collected went right back into the water column!

Use a small plastic bag. Cover the filter under watter, squizz it on top of the filter and voila, all the dirt will stay inside the bag.

I watched two other vids about Aquel 500, stating this filter 75 litres and not 150 litres? Is this true??? Can I use both activated carbon and biomedia in the container?

Try the seachem tidal hang on back filters. They are excellent and not expensive

What if you are just starting out and you don’t have any bio media except the new product that came with it?

You have two options really. Use a beneficial bacteria product like Seachem Stability or Aquadip Filter Medium. Or, speak nicely to a local fish shop and see if they will swap your new media for some dirty cycled media from their systems. Most local fish shops will understand the importance of transplanting beneficial bacteria and will be glad to help you start out in the hobby in a more successful way!

Just added the 500 turbo to my 76litrr in rear room. Where can you purchase the extra media chamber for it in uk? Looked everywhere but can’t seem to find, appreciate your comments?

Hiya. I purchased mine together from Pro Shrimp in the UK. However they don't seem to stock the chambers on their own. There is a UK seller on Ebay called super_aquarium that usually stocks them, but is currently out of stock. Sorry I can't be of more help. 👍

I'll be purchasing this pump for my 76L tank. Its already has and air sponge filter, will I need another media chamber?

Hi there. You should be fine with just the one media chamber on that size tank. Especially if you have another sponge filter. Your biological filtration capacity will be huge, and then you this will filter will help you to achieve a better flow rate too! 👍

Would you recommend this for a shrimp tank? Can the flow be turned down quite alot on it? I'm thinking about this filter for a shrimp/endler scaper's tank 35. Thanks.

Hiya. In terms of filter type and flow I think this would work well, and yes the flow can be turned down to a pretty gentle level. The one thing I'd be concerned with is that the sponge they supply is quite coarse. I'd probably switch it out for a finer sponge! This would be pretty straightforward to do! 👍

@@SpiritAquatics Good question. I just did a little search and I thought it'd be much easier to find a fine replacement foam sponge on its own. The type you want are the sort that come with the 'Biochemical Double Sponge Foam Filters' that you can buy on Ebay for about £7.99. Tbh tho, this sort of air driven filter is what I use on my 30l Nano and my other 55l scapers and it works a treat. Given that you don't want a high flow, perhaps you should get one of these to use, rather than just purchasing it for the replacement sponge. Sorry I couldn't be more useful! 👍
