Nick, I know you have to try and not be too negative about the yachts you show but I've heard a lot of negative comments about Bavaria quality. The 400 K price tag is about one third of a comparative Hallberg Rassy. Nobody can criticise the build quality and reliability of HR. Would it be fair to say the HR is the "Porsche" and the Bavaria the "VW Golf"? On the surface, this yachts looks wonderful, well laid out and practical. I was at the Düsseldorf Boat Show this year and went onboard many yachts. For me, it's all in the detail and quality of finish. The Oyster which was on show for example already had broken fixtures and fittings, just from one week of visitors playing around with things, and Oyster are up there with the big guns.

Bavaria is known for value for money, and also very popular among boat rental companies. In the past, I owned a Bavaria 50 Cruiser and learned the hard way value for money often means making compromises and taking short cuts in quality. Bavaria in the past was in my opinion quantity over quality and I hope they improved their shortcomings. Bavaria is for sure not the worst you can get for your money But for 400 K there are better alternatives
@operator04 жыл бұрын
Well said. However, the market for these plastic fantastics is strong and I don't see the quality on these boats going up any time soon.
@AntonKramer4 жыл бұрын
@@operator0 Thanks to plastic fantastic there is a boat/Yacht for almost every budget and purpose. The reason that Bavaria is popular on the rental market is that the public wants to tour with friends and family for a day or week, without too much hassle and with all the comfort. Nothing wrong with that and Bavaria serves that market very well. Although the people I know who own a Bavaria are very satisfied with it that meets all their expectations Yet my expectations in the quality and sailing characteristics are higher than the average weekend sailors
@operator04 жыл бұрын
@@AntonKramer I have no argument with anything you said. I personally wouldn't own one, but I understand that there's no such thing as a perfect boat and if one chooses a better constructed boat, they will have to make compromises on size and/or price. These boats obviously have a place in the market and I'm sure they suit many owners better than a true blue water cruiser would.

The main thing that struck me was the lack of a washer-dryer or any other laundry facility (other than showering in your clothes). As you noted, people often set of on these for several weeks at a time, and it came with the sort of storage for that use, but without any facility for laundry you'd definitely not be wanting to take family and guests on long voyages away from land. I'm guessing that walk-in storage space in the saloon, near the steps, is large enough to fit a small washer-dryer, but without a water-maker or plumbing, it isn't a simple thing to add.

Bavaria are one of the plastic fantastic manufacturers. These boats don't have the high quality construction that you would find in the top brands like Hallberg-Rassy, which Nick has done a tour of on a previous video. It's possible to circumnavigate the globe on a boat like this, but you would really want to pay close attention to the weather and avoid any severe storms. Higher quality boats would certainly be able to withstand bigger storms. Honestly, this boat is made to cruise around the Mediterranean, not so much as a globe trotter. This boat will run 500-600k with options and a similar sized Hallberg-Rassy will run well over a million with options.

It was amazing. There is something very peaceful about sailing. Great tour, even if the second promised look at the engine accessibility was forgotten (only pulling your leg Nick), sometimes I wonder if designers of boats and yachts have actually stayed in a boat or yacht, engine room and rear cabins, I don't see anyone sleeping there when the engine is running, also the shower and head and galley could have been better thought out so that the head and shower on one side together and the galley on the other side, it would make so much more space for both. Am I the only person that thinks that in mast furling alters the center of balance of the boat when in boom furling would be better to get the weight lower?
@AQUAHOLIC4 жыл бұрын
I guess the question is, why would anyone be wanting to sleep there when the engine is running? It's a sailing boat, if it's on a long enough passage to require travelling through the night it's going to be sailing, unless there's no wind in which case you'd just wait. I suppose there could be an instance where the boat is on a long passage and it requires an overnight leg and the forecast was for wind and there was none but it would seem odd to design a boat with a suboptimal layout for the other 99.9% of the time in order to counter this exact situation. Probably best to just go sleep in the fore cabin or on the saloon settee instead 🙂
@maxnex76764 жыл бұрын
@@AQUAHOLIC Depending where you sail, but when you hit the doldrums and your weather charts show moving air a few miles up or down from your position the engine has to be used, also being caught out in bad seas where an engine is the only way to keep moving or you need to move quickly before being hit by a storm and even coming in to a marina at night when people are sleeping below, you have to use the engine (I also imagine the engine in this boat is also the generator). If you are in serious tidal water like the Irish sea (been there done that) and the weather turns bad quickly, an engine is required. It is just a poor design of those two rear cabins and sound deadening material on the hatch that was opened was minimal. In the med as you well know, the only constant while coastal sailing is the wind will be blowing every which way is possible but the way you want it. Nope an engine on a sailing boat is a required necessity and should be part of the design and not like a add on and a properly designed engine room should be considered unless you talk about smaller sailing boats that are usually used for day sailing. I hear what you are saying but I do not agree.
