Hi everybody ! I, and the Aquarium des Lagons team, wish to thank you all for all your positives comments ! It's so comforting and motivating ! Gave us strength for the future, with the goal of still improving our displays... We are lucky enough to be a semi-open running system. We pump the sea water next to our aquarium, having 2 initial sand filters and drum filter filtering to 40 microns. Then, this 'new water' is distributed to our systems by gravity, with a renewal rate of maximum one time a day to one time a week depending on our systems, populations or volumes. Each reef tank has additional filtrations systems, basically sand filters (from 1 to 5 by tank depending on volume), semi-humid biological filtration and protein skimmer. We then could run our systems in absolute closed systems if needed (e.g., bad weather conditions, pollution, hurricanes, etc.). Water changes are then on a small "automatic" base during the day by the new sea water providing, and "a bit more" when back-washing our sand filters (from one time a day to 2 times a week depending on tanks). Light consists in a mix of 400W HQI, Leds, and a bit of natural light too. We also add lime water by night, but at that time of our story, no other additions are made. We aim at reproducing habitats, so both our fish and invert populations are as representative as possible of natural reefs. Each tank also have its own population of crustaceans, mollusks, echinoderms, etc. Finally, all this gave us the ability of feeding a lot our tanks. Of course the fishes, but also corals with a daily mix of phyto and zooplankton (5 different auto produced algae, rotifers, and brine shrimps). I hope this gave a few answers... Many thanks again !

I really wouldn't have expected New Caledonia to have that high quality of an aquarium. For some reason this really moves it up my list of places to visit!

The tank with the oldest coral is the most natural looking reefscape ive ever seen. It really looks like a section of reef, the placement of the corals and selection of fish is so authentic 💕

It couldn’t be more realistic! It is hard to believe that it is less than a year old. The oldest coral is especially amazing as it grew there. They didn’t remove a large coral from a reef! I wish I was 50 years younger. New Caledonia has always been a place I wanted to visit. Having seen this aquarium, it makes me want to travel again!

Many public aquariums that understand the importance of the quality of light are still using metal halides because of the safe great intensity and mainly because of the rich spectrum. That is a really nice Aquarium. One of the best in the world! I enjoyed this video a lot! Well done!!!!!!!!!!!!

All the displays that you shared were amazing. The reefs were so well thought out and diverse. And to think the corals were just replanted and there is so much that can be added.

absolutely incredible. New Caledonia is still a unique biological gem despite all the human-caused extinctions there over the past few thousand years, of lineages like Meiolania or Mekosuchus

One of my favorite places to visit - Public Aquariums. This one is fantastic! When I lived in Maui my apartment was across from the Maui Ocean Center and the Aquarium des Lagons has much better reef tanks. I'm impressed!

Those nautilus babies are so cute! The giant reef tanks also show how a lot of corals we keep in the hobby will display a completely different growth form if you give them time and space for them to get huge.

The reef tanks are so tasteful and naturalistic. It looks like it grew on its own instead of the manicured frag collection that many reef tanks can become! It's easier to do so when the tank is so big though, lol.
