I got six white cloud minnows in a planted 5 gallon tank. The minnows seem happy and fat and eggy. But I never see eggs, ever. Maybe they won't breed in this ridiculously hard water (Northern Arizona) and maybe the water is too warm. No heater but . . . Arizona (78/80 degrees indoors, 95/110 outdoors). I feed them frozen brine shrimp for breakfast and Betta flakes at bedtime. The don't eat fallen food so I looked for pygmy corydoras. Couldn't find them. Got the last two albino corys at PetSmart (I know, need more and a 20 gallon tank). Still hoping to find pygmys and then transfer albinos to a bigger tank. Corys also get a bottom pellet at bedtime. I am really enjoying the little planted tank. Repens doing awesome!

I have a betta and some dward frogs together in a 10 gallon, and it is so much fun to watch them! the frogs are definitely a bit of a challange as I found it best to feed them one at a time with tweezers, but it has been fun watching them get more social. I try to feed them during the mid-day because it seems to let them know that the light isnt that scarry, but I really recommend them!

I work at a chain petstore, and I never would have thought to put kuhli loaches or honey gouramis in a 5 gallon. The corporate line is not to put any fish besides bettas in anything smaller than a 10 gallon, but lots of people want the smallest tank possible, so this is a very useful list (we actually have more than half of these!). Thank you!
@shanes-aquatic Жыл бұрын
Corporate has to make sure they play it super safe because they don't have the ability to maintain a staff with the dedicated aquarium knowledge as opposed to a small shop that likely has employees that have been there a long time so they have the practical experience to know things similar to what Cory teaches here. I can certainly tell you that from personal experience there is a massive difference in my area between the small individually owned shops and the big chain stores.
@SilverDemon456 Жыл бұрын
@@shanes-aquatic Yes, I agree with you 100%. Very cool list, Cory. I enjoyed the confirmation it gives (from someone with your knowledge base) to see I have many of them already (chilis, danios, amanos, endlers, horned nerites), but in my 32 gallon. I guess I am weird in really loving a lot of the little fish in a big-ish tank.

Don't think it's weird. I did the same thing. Scape it, add small fish, makes it look even bigger and you can also get them shoaling/schooling that way. I came to check this vid for some extra ideas. Galaxy rasboras/Celestial Pearl Danio are a shoaling species where the males tend to pick fights with each other. You can see a couple of them having a spat in their section of your video. They tend to stress each other out if kept in very small groups - my 8 initially did very well, but once I lost a few, everything went downhill. So yes, you can keep them in a 5 gallon, but make sure you buy enough of them - if I keep them again I want 10 so they don't stress each other if a fish or two dies. It's a good they're so very tiny.

I come to these nano tank fish just to hear chili rasboras. Theyre my absolute favorites. Their shy little guys and when they color up and warm up to their tanks theyre so cute. @unseen370 Жыл бұрын
@@Mockthenerd I’ve tried 3, but if you wanted 3 in a 5gal you’d want a male and 2 females. I had 3 males and it was alright until one of them became a bully and I removed him. I think 2 fish is ideal. They’re shy fish so having one other will let you see them more. A single sparkling Gourami will hide all the time. No matter how many you put, it’s gotta be pretty heavily planted. They want cover and the ability to break sight lines.

In my recent experience, Amano shrimp also 100% need a lid, at least in the tank as small as this. I got 4 for my open 10 gallon, 3 of them crawled out on the 3 first consecutive night, one shrimp each night (unlike cherry shrimp - I have 10 of those and none jumped out). The last one is still in place over a month later. I also had an Endler jump out of that same tank after a few days since buying, although that might be partially because it was a single male (I read they're fine alone, but he didn't look happy at all).

Want to add green kubotai rasboras to this and possibly move the betta to a big community tank. - rocket killies with neocaradina shrimp (will split so both can breed better) - green neons in a 3gal QT are very shy unless I throw in a couple of endlers as dithers.

I have some chili rasbora and galaxy rasbora in my 23 gal, as well as some shrimp and snails. I have to say my galaxies haven't been shy... At all 😂. Maybe that's my setup talking but they have always been pretty lively. I had a nice school but at some point their breeding behavior (which is cool to watch BTW.) was just so much that they kinda scared my chillies away all the time. The males concurred little patches of moss as their love nests and tried to lure some females in. But they also chased everything else away. Now I have less galaxies (especially less males) and more chillies and this seems to work fine (the chillies are way more... chill lol). I have been also wanting kuhli loaches for a very long time, though I am not sure If I'd add them to the main tank with the others or just get a third tank for them to have more space. My 5 gal is doing fine with just some blue dream shirmp tbh. I wouldn't necessarily put fish in there.

I got a curved glass 5.5 gallon landscape style tank recently that’s about 14 inches long, it’s almost done cycling (it’s planted). I have a very chill betta fish and am really wanting tank mates for him because he seems so unstimulated, even by a mirror. I can’t gets snails or shrimp because I have hard scape coming out of the water for my Bettas’s bubble nest, he usually likes to make it on things/attach it so I figured I’d create a natural anchor for him. I really want 2 maybe 3 loaches in the smallest size adult species that exist, would this work? I have done some searching and websites say I need more room, so do some internet people in forums, but it all seems like quick google search regurgitation. What would you recommend? I’d really love to have a tank mate so he’s not so bored that also helps clean the tank. I wanted to ask someone experienced because I truly feel like it can work but I’ve never done it. I’ve had a friend do a tank with a pleco, snails, and betta all in one five gallon and said they did fine, pleco outlived the betta and everything. So I’m just not sure what to think!
@lizziesmusicmaking10 ай бұрын
Hi, longtime fishkeeper and former aquarium store employee here. The loaches commonly seen in the pet trade do really get too big for a 5.5 gal. Kuhli loach and black kuhli loach are probably the smallest commonly seen. Adults get to about 3.5-4 inches. Two of them plus a betta is quite a heavy bioload for a 5.5 gallon tank, and they do prefer to have company of their own kind. They need a sandy substrate - they dig. They'll often bury themselves and then you don't see them much. They can be a bit sensitive to disease and the medications to treat it, which is a pain. The other common loach species are bigger. I would be reluctant to put kuhli loaches in a tank that small, and it would be a terrible idea for things like zebra loaches or clown loaches. Clown loaches often get 6 or 8 inches long in aquaria but get bigger in the wild, and like to be kept in groups. There are some really rare loaches I've read about in books and seen once or never that stay about 2.5 inches or less but they need to be kept in schools and will be terribly difficult to find or unobtainable. Pygmy chain loaches are like this. The smaller loaches like to be in schools, which undoes the advantage of the small size when it comes to small tanks. Loaches are not really good nanotank fish.
