I have missed the old vlogs you and Randy used to do... this is really nice to get back to. Thank you for sharing your journey, and being honest about how needs and circumstances change over time. It definitely reduces my own guilt/shame cycle over needing to rehome/sell off most of my fish, and switching my tanks over to plants/snails/shrimp so I can start traveling again.... and improve my physical and mental health. Unfortunately, I don't have the cash flow this summer, because I haven't been breeding since November, so now I am re-evaluating what my various options are 😅

I just wanted to say thank you for all your awesome videos and resources to learn more about the hobby. I am fairly new to fishkeeping and have spent a lot of time watching aquarium co op videos to continue learning more and more. I had an opportunity at a local big box pet store yesterday to overhear a couple looking for plecos for the tank and the store associate directed them to the common pleco. The couple seemed nice but a little unsure of what they were after so I asked them what kind of tank they had. They said they had a 50 gallon with some cichlids and were looking for a pleco that the cichlids would leave alone. I mentioned that a common pleco could get very large for their tank and made a suggestion that they looked at a couple bristlenose plecos, a rainbow shark or even a Chinese algae eater as another possible alternative for a common pleco. I was really proud of myself to be confident in what I had learned from y’all to be able to maybe help this nice couple find a better fit for their tank!

If I understand correctly air dissolved in water isn't just a function of temperature, but also pressure. When you release the pressure, it comes out of solution as bubbles. Same principle why divers can get the bends if they don't resurface in stages.

17:21 i really appreciate the videos that aren't just "flashy". how many times do you see someone set up a tank and then NOTHING MORE IS SAID? meaning it might have crashed or failed. or the reality was that it looked ugly most of the time because plants outgrowing the initial plan, etc. i find it encouraging to see all the process and why people change things they do and how much work can go into setup. it's like seeing instagram models and comparing yourself to them. the REALITY is that there are filters and other things going on. or they work out all day. or they take pics from a certain angle. IN FISH LAND - aquascaping a tank and showing it right then at the best it will ever look.... gives a skewed view. (and some of these idiots do setups that you know is going to kill things from overcrowding, stress, attacks, ammonia, etc. and you want to learn from someone with a seasoned tank. (sure aquascaping ideas is nice but sometimes you want that update. like peapuffer tanks. looks good but then no updates.

I really enjoy these videos as I appreciate and respect your honesty. This is much more akin to what we all experience as Aquarists. Things are rarely perfect and we all desire change in our rooms and tanks. One question I did have, is how you felt about all the aquariums you recently had that guy helping you with (sorry I forget the name). I thought they looked really good. Was it a case of some of them not having your personal touch? I think that’s how I’d feel. I love to look at other people’s pretty ‘scapes, but I’d prefer the ones in my house to be by my own hand (for better or worse!). Keep up the great work

I've always heard that chlorine will gas off in roughly 24 hours. Would it be possible to have you test for chlorine after 24 and 48 hours? I could do it myself, but this way, more people will learn the results. Thanks
@AquariumCoop5 ай бұрын
I ddin't test it, but it smelled like talking into a pool for at least a week, you could really smell the chlorine/bleach
@icarlsw345 ай бұрын
For a regular water change with tap water is more like 2 to 3 days. 24h isn't enough time. It depends on how much chlorine you have. And if you just chlorine or chloramine., as some tap water has chloramine which takes a lot longer to gas off than chlorine.

I played musical aquariums during the pandemic (I wasn't going anywhere, SOOOOO...) and it took 3 years to move everything to the new rack system, get set-ups balanced, etc.... Have you tried putting a hob filter with fine filter media on the cloudy tanks and let it run to see if it takes out the cloudiness in the water, then turn it off or remove and see if it comes back? It might take care of the problem w/o having to tear down tanks. ;-)

@oilucky15 ай бұрын
Would it be too much of a pain/headache to get one system going? Like fish that have the same water parameters/temps on one system. Less cleaning filters but I guess more prone to getting algae in the tanks? Wanted to also add do you think the reason behind the algae is the various different light sources that are going into the tank other than the light on top? Like from the room light or surrounding lights on other aquariums?

Okay, kids, time for Bleach 101: Bleach is used to kill germs, it isn't a solvent, it doesn't do a good job breaking down dirt and grime. Kind of like you said "it's pretty much just super chlorine", yeah, that is ACTUALLY what it is. The chlorine is the part of bleach that does the disinfecting. That being said, there are bleach solutions that have solvents added in, but plain bleach is not a degreaser or solvent, you would need to add that manually in order to really cut through scum. Additionally, any exposure of bleach to UV radiation (sunlight) will cause it to start breaking down, most sources agree that 24 hours after the exposure bleach is rendered FAR LESS effective, so leaving it in for a week isn't doing you much. It's a pretty misunderstood substance, but years of working with it as a germicidal cleaner at my day job has made me pretty familiar with it. Hope this helps!
