I guess "big" is relative. For a countertop RO unit it's quite compact! Additionally, for $29 I bought the locking slide tray. This is perfect for easily moving the unit to the counters edge, allowing me to easily fill tall containers. I give Aquatru countertop a 4.5 / 5.

This looks like the best option for my tiny apartment kitchen. Yes, it will take up counter space I wish it didn't. However, my landlord told me that if I install an under sink RO filter and it ever leaks, I'm responsible for replacement of all damaged areas--material AND labor. Yikes!

Great review! I have been using a Berkey gravity filter for 11 years for my family and recently learned about all the class action lawsuits against them and have no confidence in what they are doing anymore. I just bought the ProOne filters but my TDS meter shows 6ppm going in (used wegmans spring water) and coming out after running through the PoOne filter (after i did the 4 cycles of primeing with gallons of water), it reads 186ppm so i have zero confidence in any of these gravity based filters especially since they are only NSF certified on the "parts and materials" and NOT any certifications of filtering out what they claim to filter out. I do have an RKIN RO system for 2 years but it is not NSF certified and replacing the filters is a pain cause connectors break, and it wastes a ton of water (1/2 the water is wasted). I hate to spend the $469 for this, and been looking at under sink options, except i have to drill a hole in my counter top which not sure i want to do, so think going to buy the aquatru with the Alkaline Mineral boost filter to put back in the healthy minerals. Great video, really appreciate it.

Hey Alexa- at 7:50 you said 1 gallon of tap water to make 3 or 4 gallons of pure water- huh? Did you mean 3/4 gal of pure? At 8:30 you say which tank needs to be replaced, but I'm sure you meant which filter. I've had this system myself for a couple years and would say I'm overall pleased because of the purity, esp. chlorine, fluoride & other chemicals...the cons to me are 1) very difficult to put in a full tank of tap water if you don't have access to the machine from the back, which I do, and I can't imagine doing it at all if I wasn't pretty strong because it's heavy and awkward to fit in place, 2) who decided having the handle INSIDE the tank was a good idea? I have absolutely no way to clean hard water buildup from around the hinges, and the kit I bought from them to clean the system of this buildup doesn't deal with anything unless it's below the water line, so outside of the tank also gets water spots- and if I try scrubbing these, the plastic scratches very easily, 3) lastly, the silver painted areas- sure it looks nice, but it's paint, and it's wearing off as well as marking up my sink every time I clean the tanks. I wonder if any of these practical issues will be addressed by the company in future? Just a note- I got their mineral solution to add the "good stuff" back into your water, but it tastes weirder to me than the stripped- down purified water, so I have a separate mineral supplement I take. Thanks for giving me a place to vent my frustrations! Be well and stay hydrated :)

Please don't think of TDS as a way of measuring water contamination. TDS includes all dissolved solids (bad and good ones like minerals) in water and is more of an indicator of water aesthetics. So your water could be perfectly fine for drinking purposes. Aside from that, the AquaTru is NSF-certified for 87.1% average TDS reduction. This was tested against official standards and is something you can 100% rely on.

Thank you for the review. I think this is the unit for us! One question...we plan on using this for a cabin that we use on the weekends. Would it be necessary to flush out the entire system 4 times every weekend? That certainly would be cumbersome. I can handle washing and drying the pitchers at the end of each weekend. THank you
@boswater6065
@boswater6065 7 ай бұрын
Here is what the manual says about that: "If leaving on vacation start by switching the unit off. Next, wash both tanks with soap and water. Allow the tanks to dry thoroughly before reinstalling them. When you have returned from vacation purge the system of stagnant water by running 4 full tap water tanks through the system. Once the fourth tank has been filtered the unit is ready to use. This process can be avoided by having a house sitter run one tank of tap water through the AquaTru® at least once a week." - So apparently, if you use the AquaTru at least once on the weekend, you should be fine without flushing it every time.

I have another question. What is the preferred method of remineralization? Filter or Drops? And if you buy the remineralization filter, what phase of your filters does the remineralization happen #1-2 prefilter? Filter #4 or the RO filter? Which filter is adapted to remineralize? Does it alter the efficiency at all?
@boswater6065
@boswater6065 Ай бұрын
Great question. I'd say by now we've tested 3 or 4 RO systems using remineralization filters and results weren't that great. Some of the mineral levels did increase but just not that much. So there might be systems that actually work, but based on our testing, I'd say I prefer adding minerals by hand. If you do use a remineralization filter, then it needs to go after the RO membrane, because that's where all the minerals are being removed. Remineralization doesn't alter the filtration results, unless you have to replace one of the regular filters with a remineralization filter.

I came here after reading this is the only product Erin Brochovich recommends. I’m curious if the filtered water is going back in a plastic container how is it not being recontaminated with microplastics?
@boswater6065
@boswater6065 Ай бұрын
This is not how microplastic contamination works. But I'm assuming you mean plastics in general. If you are concerned about that, you could simply store the water in a different container.
@sons_of_god1306
@sons_of_god1306 Ай бұрын
@@boswater6065 they say water bottles contain microplastics. Water being stored in plastic water bottles I’m not sure how that’s much different than a plastic jug. But then idk how microplastics work scientifically lol
@boswater6065
@boswater6065 Ай бұрын
Sorry, my first answer wasn't very helpful and it seems that it wasn't entirely correct either. Let me try one more time: So, it depends on the definition of microplastics you use. One type comes from larger plastic debris, like a water bottle floating in the ocean, degrading over time. This happens because the structural integrity of the plastic degrades and it essentially breaks down into small pieces, many of which you can see with the naked eye. And then there is the second type of microplastics (nanoplastics). From what I understand, this type is much smaller and comes from plastics leaching stuff into the water they touch. Apparently, it may very well be possible that any type of plastic can cause this type of leaching. So with the AquaTru, it will remove microplastics type 1 during filtration, but it likely recontaminates the water with microplastics type 2, because like you said it uses plastic components. The question is how severe is the recontamination? Unfortunately, this isn't something we can test for. Also, I don't really see an alternative. All RO systems I know use at least some plastic components.
@sons_of_god1306
@sons_of_god1306 Ай бұрын
@@boswater6065 yes that’s what I was meaning. However once the water has been through all the filters and say the water was immediately placed in to a glass container is it possible to test if it still has microplastics in this case the type 2 you were talking about?

@@boswater6065 I didn't test the water. I have a list of contaminants in my municipal tap water, and that's what I use to make sure that the filter system I use at least claims to remove them. I have 13 that exceed the EWG's safety level, and another 11 that are present, but in acceptable levels. The Clearly Filtered Pitcher removes all but two of the 13 (chlorite and Haa9, which it seems there isn't even a test for, so it might remove them. Neither Berkey nor ProOne removes them either). And all but one of the 11 (chlorate. Same story as chlorite.) The Clearly Filtered Pitcher comes out on top, even removing PFOA & PFOS, microplastics, virus, and bacteria, etc. ProOne is a very close second, and Berkey comes in third. Question: if the filters for 1 year cost $60 and the 2 year combo filters cost $150 how are you saving $40? That math according to what you said implies that 2 years worth of filters in a combo pack is $30 more than if you bought 2 seperate one year filters. Please explain. Question #2: 1 gallon of tap water makes 3-4 gallons of filtered water? How is that realistically possible?
@boswater6065
@boswater6065 6 ай бұрын
Question #1: You are right, the way I tried to explain this is a little confusing. To clarify: The different filter elements have different filter lives. The pre-filter element lasts 6 months, the RO membrane 2 years, and the carbon post-filter 1 year. And of course, the different filter elements have different prices + buying them separately is more expensive than buying them in bundles. But you can expect to pay between $100 and $120 a year on average for replacement filters. Question #2: It is not possible. To clarify: The pure-to-wastewater ratio is 4:1, so if you process 5 water gallons total, you will end up with 4 gallons of purified water that you can use and only 1 gallon of wastewater. That's what I was trying to say.
@davidclark6694
@davidclark6694 6 ай бұрын
@boswater6065 okay thank you for explaining. One last question. I would prefer to know exactly what 6 months and 2 years means. Basically that time frame doesn't explain water usage. If I drink a gallon a day and another person drinks half a gallon a day both filtration setups can't last the same amount of time. Could you provide the life of the filters based on gallons filtered?
@boswater6065
@boswater6065 6 ай бұрын
Sure thing: Filter stage 1/2 lasts 600 gallons or 6 months RO membrane lasts 1,200 gallons or 2 years Fiter stage 4 lasts 600 gallons or 1 year But keep in mind that this can also vary based on your water's contamination level.

*Original reply deleted by accident.* Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Fred. Many of said videos rely on measuring TDS, but that's not the best way to measure water quality. @@boswater6065 BTW could you kindly explain these “7 or 8 stages of filtration”. Eg: Waterdrop G3P 600 claims to have 7 stages of filtration and the G3P 800 claims to have 8. However, they both have only 3 filters and if you add the remineralisation it’s 4 or 5. The same goes for AquaTru, So if some have 8 stages of filtration and others less levels of filtration how come they all come with 3 filters? Or each filters does 2 stages which they’re not telling us 🤔 The Waterdrop’s previous under the counter RO model the G2 claims 5 stages of filtration. Are these under the counter RO very advanced with their 7 or 8 levels of filtration compared to over the counter ones? Or it’s another hype!
@boswater6065
@boswater6065 Ай бұрын
Think of these "stages" as layers. So a single filter cartridge might contain 2 layers of filtration like a sediment filter paper wrapped around an activated carbon core. That said, I wouldn't rate water filters based on the sheer number of filter stages or layers they use. This is just marketing.

Personally after around 6 months of use and caring for this thing so much, the water barely cycles now. I've done 2 cleaning cycles with the descaler solution and it take like probably around 1 hr to filter the water. Its terrible. Id probably give this thing a 1.8/5. Or like a 3/10. When it filters, it's fine. But 1 hr? Ive changed the filters and purged and cleaned the system. Just wanted to vent. Lol

Just an FYI I have bought two of these the longevity of these are horrible. Both units only lasted 7-8 months so close to 2k for 1.5 years at the price you would think these would last 4 years especially after descaling once a month. Customer support is horrible basically told me nothing that they can do. All the positives reviews are at the beginning of the experience. Please Please dont waste your money like I did. They wouldnt cover the warrenty unless I paid to send it back and if they deemed my water had too many minerals then they would do nothing

I'd be interested if the system, including filters, weren't mostly plastic. I'd like to see the ratio of plastic (by weight) to the amount of water produced, which would be dependent on the condition of water to be filtered. There's a lot of plastic in those filters and no mention if they're recyclable.

I sort of have the same concerns but since the water that runs through it and sits in it won't be hot then the plastic won't leech into the water. Plus its BPA-free so these factors ease my concern. I'm mostly concerned that this thing will break down after a year or two and then you have to go spend another $450...

@@boswater6065 Hi. Yes. I’m in the process of back and forth emails. But I have lost confidence. They told me it’s because the water is alkaline and I’m acidic. That’s a crock.
