Today we're testing the effects of different 5.56 bullet weights and types that viewers have commented on in previous videos. The original 55 grain 5.56 faces off with the 62 grain M855 and a 77 grain to see which one does the most damage to our wood, concrete, and steel targets!

Cool,thanks…appreciate the fast response…I shoot and own firearms but never seen where I thought I needed an AR,but decided to give it a try…just for target shooting,so I don’t necessarily want to spend senseless amounts of money for ammo that will only be used for that,lol…Friends have them and ranges with plenty of property to shoot,so should be fun when the weather warms up.Targets and blow up stuff,lol…but want to do it safely and responsibly and economically…I will be going to an inside range and seek out a qualified instructor to start so thanks again!

Hey, i just thought of something. I dont know if youre doing this already, but remember, when you're testing against several 3/8 or 1/2 targets, that the steel is of the exact same quality and tensile strength. I.E. Cold Rolled vs Hot Rolled. Or A1011, A36, A588 etc.. Just a heads up and something to remember. It would definitely make a difference if the targets weren't cut from the same sheet of steel. AWESOME CONTENT and learning!!

I’m brand new at AR ownership and found this video very enlightening and well done! Thanks! I’m a new subscriber now and hope to see more from this site! Would love to see a beginner’s post that would put into perspective of what is necessary for a novice(like myself) to consider when purchasing ammo for this platform…I will be practicing using the AR at the range so should my ammo be a lower(55grain) for that application while learning the gun? And then upgrading to say to 62grain for defensive ammo? Hope these aren’t dumb questions,lol…but just learning,thanks!

People get far to into the weeds with ammo, bullet weight, etc. Just grab a bunch of 55 grain and run it, that works fine for 99.99% of the time. 62 grain is designed to penetrate more and is probably not great for self defense. A 77gr open tip would be better but again, 55 will do just fine. The biggest thing is to shoot and learn a lot. Welcome!

@harlech2 3 ай бұрын
M855 was designed to penetrate a late Soviet-era steel helmet. That mild steel tip does come at a cost because it is difficult to position perfectly round-to-round resulting in well documented diminished accuracy. Also well documented is the ice-pick wound characteristics. The transition to M4 length barrels (and the resulting reduction in velocity) seems to be responsible as the round doesn't destabilize and fragment. I settled on the 77 grain AAC offering as it seems to feed reliably (at least in my platform), is VERY accurate (it's a Sierra Match King offering) and at $.85/rd won't break the bank. I don't really think I am going to be running into any armor to speak of and it works well on small and medium game game and varmints (the four-legged kind, though I suspect that based on the Marine Corps experience with Mk262, it would work equally well on the two-legged kind as well)

i appreciate the content, however it would have been ideal to use a bras/ us produced 55gr bullet as the tula ammo, while 55 grs, is not going to be the same as say, m193. the bullet construction is different with tula using a bi metal jacket as opposed to pure copper and lead, which could lead to different results. and m193 would have had a little more veolcity. personally i stopped purchasing any steel cased ammo for my AR as its not as reliable, and these days brass isnt that much more anyways.

The AAC 77g TMK round that you used is basically the equivalent of a 77gr Vmax. It is an unfair assessment to compare a Vmax style bullet to a FMJ on hard targets. It's like comparing tissue damage from a Vmax or SP with a FMJ.

Depends on if you want to keep the hides or not. 77gr your getting 2 holes almost guaranteed. 50-55gr vmax or lighter and you'll get a lot of stopping power but not too bad of damage on the other side fur. Anything lighter than 55gr likes at least a 1:8 twist maybe a 1:9 twist 223 or 223 wylde barrel tho. You'll see most varmint rds are 223 specific and not 556

You needed the OTM 77 they are not designed to open up like a hollow point, its as close as you can get to fmj…. The open tip is to upset it in flesh
@Subtlenimbus
@Subtlenimbus 8 ай бұрын
They do tend to open like a hollow point, but the open tip has nothing to do with flesh. They are match bullets, and have an open tip so that the core lead can be poured into the jacket from the front instead of the rear. This keeps the weight toward the rear of the bullet which aids stability.
