What do castle nut stakes, barrel dimples, anti rotation tabs/pins, and barrel nut through bolts all have in common? They are a physical barrier that prevents a part from moving in an assembly that is subject to a lot of nasty vibrations and heat that tend to make things move.
Friction alone should never be the only means of retention and if you bet on it, eventually you will lose. Putting a piece of metal in the way is a much more secure method of keeping a part from shifting or coming loose.
Friction might be the latch that keeps the door closed but stakes, dimples, pins, and bolts are the locks that keep the latch from opening when it shouldn't.
Staking isn't very difficult and can be done with even a simple punch, hammer, and soft table to do it.
