I remember playing this when I was a kid. I was not alive when this game came out but, unlike other kids my age the newest console I had was a Wii. I grew up with a bunch of older games and consoles such as this on the PS1, so its cool to see you show this game some love.

I know GT1 was best but GT2 had way more functionality in it as I started with that and essentially that game was THEE game that got me hooked on racing games. 22 years later since I played that I remember like it was yesterday all the tracks and all the cars and JUST HOW MUCH FUN I HAD grinding those races especially the endurance races then we would proper sim race it with 2 guys swooping after pit stops to keep our FOCUS HIGH. LOLOLOL. there really was no other PURE enjoyment I had in racing games as of late. FOR its time it really was super advanced compared to today's standards. as most of today's games features was already in GT1 and GT2

You could remap the controls to use the right analog stick for acceleration and braking. I did that the moment the Dual Analog controller came out, and it worked like a champ.

This game came out when I was 5 and I spent all of 1998-2001, 2002 with a Mad Catz steering wheel ripping laps around High Speed Ring in a 900 horsepower Mitsubishi GTO with Ash blasting out the tv. Literally my favorite game of all time.

I was 11 when this came out. I'll never forget the day I got it. And how EFFING difficult it was... Gran Turismo 2 was a lot more enjoyable because it wasn't as hard. I still play them from time to time and I still marvel at the fact of how good those two games are. Gran Turismo still has that special feel to it.

gran turismo 1 was a game i played a decent amount of as a kid. i played more gran turismo 2 but loved both games they were genuinely brilliant games and it took years before i played another track racer that lived up to the expectations gt2 gave me. i unfortuantely only played a small amount of gran turismo 3 as i never owned it but a huge amount of gran turismo 4. whiel gt4 was a spectacular game in its own right, i did find my myself still going back to gt2 but maybe that was just nostalgia. the next game which gave me the same feeling as gran turismo 2 was forza motorosport 2 and i loved that game. i played that game an unbelieveable amount, i miss the old online lobby system where you could join groups of people doing certain things, like cruise lobbys, drift lobbys, racing lobbys, etc. the experience of the old games was better than modern games imo. the single player was its own experience, then you had the online aspect which felt distinct and you could get what you wanted from it. modern forza lacks this.

2:55 bit late to this myself but the thing I always loved about Gran Turismo games is that almost all of them throughout history have allowed you to custom bind your controls. You can use the triggers if you spend five minutes digging around in settings

Yeah I was playing and beat game with x/o as gas/brake but now replaying it with right analogue fwd/back and it's a game changer, maybe remapping to L2/R2 going to give a lil more controls. But since GT3 use L2/R1 for gear shifting and it feels natural

I remember playing Gran turismo 3 on my dad's PS2 for a good while before we got an XBox and I started playing the Forza games. GT3 was basically this game but MORE, you could get licenses and earn some insane cars from championships. Some realy insane race cars you could get as well

Damn bro you brought back a some really good memories. Playing it as kid is what hooked me up into racing game. I remember spending hours and hours grinding and getting the GTO. Damn the joy of getting that 97 viper. Also qualifying for the Special Stage Route 11. Was the sweetest feeling I've ever felt.

I was not alive when this came out but I saw my stepbrother play it when I was 4 years old back in 2002. I remember being completely confused on why he was faster than me despite spinning out most of the race. Of course cause I didn't know what acceleration meant and I kept picking the slower car. This game was the foundation for not only my love for racing games but video games in general and I still consider this game one of the best of all time

This is the 3rd game that was developed by Polyphony Digital (formerly called Polys Entertainment). This is the final game that was developed under the name Polys Entertainment. The first 2 games they developed are called Motor Toon Grand Prix and Motor Toon Grand Prix 2. U know what they say, the 3rd time's the charm, and they did so with this game.

Ford Racing 2 or 3, NFS HP2, Midnight Club 3, and Forza Horizon 1 are undoubtably the best. Always been a die-hard racing game person, but never been a Gran Turismo fan much

If u go to Controller Configuration, u can change the Accelerator/Brake from X/Square to the Right Analog Stick Up (Accelerator)/Down (Brake) and will be pressure sensitive. I hope that if Polyphony Digital does re-release or re-make this game they should implement the analog acceleration and braking into the R2 and L2 buttons/triggers respectively.

I was 10 when this game came out. It was amazing, but it's only my all time 2nd favorite racing game. The real BEST car/racing game of all time was Motor City Online. An MMO from 2001 based on a very modified need for speed High Stakes game engine. you had to pay to repair your car if you damaged it. parts wore out and broke. It was full of real world parts, like a sneeky pete nos system you can still buy. Building an engine was like opening a parts catalog. or going on ebay (it had auctions). you could even buy cars to take parts off of to swap between cars. and trade between players. You didnt just buy "race part" and instantly get faster. the options seemed endless swapping parts and seeing how they effected torque curves and power to weight ratios. Tires were listed by size, springs by spring rates, carbs by cfm, engine blocks by cubic inches, cylinder heads by style, material, and compression ratio, nitrous by hp and dry or wet systems, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, pistons, connecting rods, ect. not all parts fit together. You couldn't put small block chevy wedge heads on a ford boss 429 block. It was so complex people would pay you in game to build or sell pre built cars set up for certain tracks for class racing. websites were dedicated to track and car specific build lists. I had folders full of printed out builds with notes scribbled on them. This complexity was also part of the games downfall. along with dial up internet and $15 a month subscription fee. It was an mmo, with active game moderators, chat rooms, avatars, a leveling system, a ton of different auctions, rare cars, rare paint jobs, rare parts, weekly time trial leader boards, car clubs that would compete in weekly turf wars where each club averaged their top 5 times of an event to own it for that week where their club and logo would be displayed. If you weren't into the club races you could go race for fun, bet cash, or for pink slips. Unfortunetly EA did what EA does and killed it to use the servers for the sims online. I played it right up until the servers shut down and kicked me off in 2003. No car game has ever come close since.
