Ara Pacis

The Ara Pacis Augustae is the altar voted by the Senate in 13 BC and dedicated to the policy of peace promoted by Augustus. The altar is enclosed by a large wall built on high podium to which one gained
access by a center stair on the front side. Both the surrounding wall
and the altar were faced with a rich decoration, still partially
conserved.

dedicato alla politica di pace promossa da Augusto. L’altare è
racchiuso all’interno di un grande recinto costruito su un alto podio
a cui si accedeva da una scalinata al centro della fronte. Sia
l’altare che il recinto recavano una ricca decorazione in parte ancora conservata.

do, please NOT assume that the ancients painted any of the marbles, simply because residual pigment can be seen/detected on many of them today. if there is color you may be correct ONLY in the observation that SOMEONE at some POINT painted these works. we can be relatively certain that SOME were, but not many were originally meant to be. ask yourself first: how could the pigments withstand the hot sun and elements for ANY length of time? who could possibly have maintained the works under the environmental conditions? and finally, can anyone even imagine paint being applied to the Pieta.... the busts of countless personages so painstakingly sculpted, or the exquisite classical statues of Greece? come, come. ; ) have you considered it?
