There's this cool moment in the book when Gandalf realizes Frodo and Sam deserted the fellowship, he says something along the lines of "now the greatest danger is behind us," by which I think he meant taking the ring for himself. He would rather keep as much distance between the ring and himself as possible, he's scared of what would happen if he spends too much time with it.

Earendil's choice only extends to his grandchildren, so Elrond and Elros's kids would have the choice, but not after. Regarding the Elf-script on the doors: "They did not, however, appear in the inscriptions on the West Gate of Moria. The Dwarves said that it was in courtesy to the Elves that the Feanorian letters were used on that gate, since it opened into their country and was chiefly used by them. But the East Gates, which perished in the war against the Orks, had opened upon the wide world, and were less friendly. They had borne Runic inscriptions in several tongues: spells of prohibition and exclusion in Khuzdul, and commands that all should depart who had not the leave of the Lord of Moria written in Quenya, Sindarin, the Common Speech, the languages of Rohan and of Dale and Dunland."

However, being cowardly, in the face of the might and splendor of the last alliance they panicked and fled, staying in the region for the duration of the war. The last alliance did not deal with this force for the sake of time.

Best Estimate I can give from the maps in the books (I used an actual ruler and the legend) is the shire is roughly 100 miles wide from michel delving to the brandywine bridge. Hobbiton is mid-way between the two and frogmorton is midway between hobbiton and the bridge as well, so that should be approx. 50 and 25 miles respectively for those two from the eastern border as well. Edit: For real life reference on the distance in england, it is roughly the same distance as the crow flies from michel delving to the brandywine bridge that it is from downtown Birmingham to the many bridge crossings of the Thames is London e.g. Westminster Bridge.

I don’t think that Eldarion and his sisters had any choice. As far as I understand, in the half-elven line every generation can choose to become mortal - but if any chooses mortality, the fates of their children is sealed. That’s why Elrond’s children can still choose, but Elros’s offspring remains mortal even though they don’t like it further down the line.
@matwatson79472 жыл бұрын
I think it also makes sense because Arwen had become Mortal BY THE TIME Eldarion and co. were conceived. If they had been conceived (but not born) before Arwen married it would be really interesting to debate with Tolkien fans. Side note: Conception before marriage is more for G.R.R.M not Mr. Catholicism himself
@SNWWRNNG2 жыл бұрын
The Shire is ~18,000 square miles big - about as large as the English Midlands. Regarding the rescue of Gandalf - Radagast asked Gwaihir to go to Isengard, knowing that Gandalf was there but not knowing Gandalf was captive there. The children of Aragorn and Arwen are mortal and without choice because they received the Gift of Men (to die and to leave the World, instead of being stuck in it until the end) through their parents. The choice of Elwing, Earendil, Elros and Elrond is only extended to Elrond's children because he chose the Elvish fate and married an elf. Men's fate of being free from the Music of the Ainur and leaving the world through death to join Eru (God) is considered the superior fate by faithful Numenoreans and, while they were growing old and weary in a declining world, by the Elves and Valar as well. Men were also promised participation in the Second Music that will create a perfect World after this one ends, while the Elves don't even know if they will exist beyond the end of the World - they have to hope for Eru's mercy. I'd like to believe that the language on the doors is Sindarin written in Tengwar mainly because Celebrimbor and Narvi worked on it together as close friends. A sign of unity between the two peoples, as this would be the door that Elves would enter Khazad-dum from. Love the Tolkien content :) Keep it coming, until the end.

I feel like the reason that the witch king of Angmar was able to be destroyed by the female character, whose name I cannot remember is because for thousands of years he has believed that he cannot be killed by any man and he says it to her, ‘ no man can kill me!’ And so when she says “I am no man“ and takes off her helmet, revealing herself as a woman, the witch king realizes in that moment something he has never considered before ever, and that the prophecy isn’t saying that he cannot be killed just that he can’t be killed by a man, so he dies, because he is completely shocked, and believes because of repeating the prophecy in his head over and over and over for thousands of years that he’s been beat because he believes the prophecy so much that it’s like a physical object when it’s revealed to him as being something other than what he has thought it was forever and ever and ever he creates his own demise in the realization that the way he interpreted the prophecy. His entire existence was simply incorrect. He can be killed, just not by a man.

I find we know close to nothing about the Nazgul, even their names, very thematic. They craved power and recognition in life, but in death they are slaves, all their great deeds forgotten, all their kingdoms turn to ruin, never to be remembered. I think that was intentional by Tolkien. He fleshed out everything he could but left the Nine in the dark. It seems purposeful and ties well with the deceptive nature of evil.

Yes, as the comments will show, Gwaihir was tasked with bearing messages to Orthanc so it wasn't a complete coincidence. It was however a coincidence that he should return to Orthanc when Gandalf happened to be imprisoned there. Had he been a few days earlier then he would have missed Gandalf. The point being, Gandalf did not send for aid. He got lucky that Gwaihir was returning information after the wizard had been captured.

Couple points to correct. Gwaihir finds Gandalf at Orthanc because Radagast sent him there (by Gandalfs request earlier on Radagasts mission to find Gandalf). Next the river rises up @ Elrond's command. Elrond has one of the 3 and it's implied he's using his. This wipes out 4 or 5 Nazgul and Glorfindal and Aragorn arrive behind the others and scare the rest of them in the river (by Glorfindals aura and torches???). Legolas says he is "as old" as several lifetimes of great oaks, take that for whatever it's worth. Good vid.

You gave an incomplete answer as to where Isildur was going. Yes he was going to Rivendell but it wasn't to get his wife and kids back after the last alliance. It was a year later and he was going to surrender the Ring to Elrond after coming to realise that he was incapable of mastering the Ring. A detail that I missed for 20 years. It's quite tragic that he had the wisdom to realise the Ring shouldn't stay with him but that his attempt to give it to Elrond got him killed.

On the subject of Uruk-hai, it is worth noting that the word "Uruk-hai" is just black speech for "orc folk". In this sense, it is not at all surprising that there are uruk-hai in Isengard and Mordor, though it is not adequately explained why the term is sometimes used to distinguish specific varieties of orcs from others.

Welcome back. 1) RE Frodo's parents boat incident - Hobbit theory: a) Drogo's weight sunk the boat; b) his mother Primula pushed Drogo in and he pulled her in with him. 2) Bilbo - he DID go to the Lonely Mountain and Dale before returning to settle in Imladris. Balin had already left for Khazad-dum. 3) Saruman - he made his own ring and declared himself 'Saruman of Many Colours'. To which Gandalf replies, 'I liked white better', and added one of Tolkien's greatest declarations against the science of Saruman: 'he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.' 4) RE Gwaihir - Following Gandalf's previous instruction to Radagast to 'send out all beasts and birds and tell them to bring news to Orthanc', Gwaihir was in Orthanc to report his findings. 5) Nargothrond - there's a cool ancillary in DaC: cloak_nargothrond. Is that yours Galu? 6) Dwavres & Rings - they came to Imladris NOT for news of Balin, but to warn Bilbo that a messenger of Mordor had come asking about 'hobbits', offering to return 3 of the Dwarven rings in exchange for information. 7) Celebrimbor - didn't build the doors of Moria, which were made by the dwarf Narvi. Celebrimbor merely 'drew these signs'. 8) The Watcher in the Water - wasn't it Maiar, similar to the Balrogs? 9) Legolas - wasn't his mum captured/killed by Gundabad orcs?

I think at times when you mention something happens because Tolkien needed them to happen for the story you are forgetting that Tolkien’s worldview always wants to and assumes that good actions can happen by apparent chance because of divine providence, the way the ring is destroyed in the end of ROTK follows this, in Tolkien’s views the ultimate good is God and he wouldn’t want a hero who did everything perfectly instead he would want God to guide the story to the ultimate good

Gwaihir also owed Gandalf for saving his life at some point before the Hobbit when he was shot by a Valesman. Assuming the lead Eagle in the Hobbit is Gwaihir, which is probable. As for Aragorn and Arwen's children, the choice was given up to the second generation, so Elrond and Arwen get to choose, but Eldarion doesn't because he's not born from an Elf and a Man, he's born from a Peredhil and a Man (who also has a tiny bit of Elf in him). On the topic of Elves vs Dwarves, the only major bit of that we get in LotR is from Celeborn, who personally survived the whole Thingol incident and ever after was anti-Dwarf to the point of refusing ever to visit Khazad-Dum even when he lived in Hollin. Galadriel outright tells him off for doing it to Gimli because obviously Gimli had nothing to do with it.

Eagles are also known for their symbolic value, not just their convenience as plot devices. They are often depicted as guardians, with serpents (wyrms) in their beaks, as a symbol of lights victory over evil. Furthermore, they also symbolize the royal virtue of justice and the sins of arrogance, probably because their eyes are set on far away objects (goals), while turning away from the demands of the day.

And in the book chapter "The White Rider" there are a couple of pages where The Three Hunters and Gandalf discuss Merry and Pippin being safe enough with the Ents while they head off to deal with Rohan at Edoras.

Two points: 1. He DOES say that Merry and Pippin are safe. "Merry and Pippin are quite safe. In fact they are far safer than you are about to be!" 2. He also tells them that Merry and Pippin are serving a purpose by being in Fangorn. "The falling of small stones that starts an avalanche". In any case, they all trust Gandalf implicitly. If Gandalf tells them they don't need to keep chasing the hobbits and instead need to be doing something else, they'll all take his word for it.

Sauron is most powerful Maiar because he learns from Morgoth, it's kinda like the dark side, easier quicker, more seductive and destructive. Perhaps Morgoth poured a little bit of his power into Sauron as well once he knew he would be defeated, look at the Balrogs etc.
