Alas, Tolkien saying "shut up" is actually a fake. Shame because it is the best response to the eagle question. Also, the question about Smeagol is why is he so addicted to the ring initially. Not why he is addicted to it after having used it for 500 years: I thought that was fairly self-explanatory.
@davidp71782 жыл бұрын
One factor was Smeagol began by taking the ring and killing Deagol. Bilbo began by showing mercy by not killing Gollum in the tunnel.
@Bradley_UA Жыл бұрын
@@davidp7178 Yeah, but why was the ring able to make smeagol kill, and not bilbo?
@johnroscoe2406 Жыл бұрын
@@Bradley_UA I think it should be understood that Smeagol already had a rotten side to him; the ring amplified it immediately. Bilbo and others didn't have the same degree of rot already in them.

It has been wonderful to hear your thoughts and elaborations on these topics and it saddens me to see it end. I think it's implied that part of the reason that Frodo has such an easy time with the ring is because it was voluntarily given to him, unlike Gollum who killed for it.

7:03 I would say it means they fade away as to materiality, grow more wraithlike in make up, though obviously not necessarily damned or near damned as the Ringwraiths. That would explain elven or elfin appearances later on where they need to be in their Sidhes to fully materialise. The elves of Tolkien are not just meant to be homonyms to the elves of folklore, but to be Tolkien's version of explanatory background. As my Susan Pevensie fan fic has her, Audoin Errol (I had the names of father and son turned around), and the godmother of Uncle Andrew all be of fairy origin, and as Tolkien's version is rejected as incorrect, I have a chapter where she and her upcoming husband Audoin Errol are discussing "what are faires" ...

23:05 Tolkien answered it. In Valinors, ringbearers would like anyone else eventually die. But, Valinor would provide them with a healing they cannot get in this world and would need before they die.

I think Smeagol is much more ring corrupted easily because he started his possession of the Ring by killing a friend and with bad motivations. When Bilbo started his possession of the Ring, he did the opposite by letting Gollum live.

Tolkien had several variants on the aging of Elves to adulthood including 1 year to 1 year, 1 to 3, 1 to 12 and even 1 to 144. He seems to have settled on the shorter rather than longer aging process for childhood (though I get the impression that he really wanted the longer childhood, he ran into problems with various set in stone dates for characters). Elves are fully adult by 24 sun years and then slow down to a 1 to 144 years aging process They don't get 'elderly', but rather after a great length* of time start to 'fade' or 'diminish', with the spirit (fea) consuming the body (hroa). *In one place he suggest the process starts (almost imperceptibly) after 96 'life years' (over 10,000 sun years) while in another it is 120 (almost 14,000).

Morgoth was booted out into the Void, which is just space. As a result, I always find it funny that Morgoth is therefore floating around somewhere and the Valar have just made him someone else's problem! And considering we know from The Notion Club Papers that there are aliens in the universe...

Minas Morgul was made of white stone, but had this ominous greenish glow, mostly because of some kind of “evil magic”, something that poisoned the stream that passed around the Dead City. That moment in which it shone like a beacon, it was an answer to a previous signal that came from the Mount of Doom: first as an earthquake that the Hobbits could feel, then a sudden red flash that painted in crimson all the mountains around them, and finally a great crack of thunder (apparently a volcanic eruption) “And Minas Morgul answered. There was a flare of livid lightings: forks of blue flame springing up from the tower and from the encircling hills into the sullen clouds. The earth groaned; and out of the city there came a cry. Mingled with harsh high voices as of birds of prey, and the shrill neighing of horses wild with rage and fear, there came a rending screech, shivering, rising swiftly to a piercing pitch beyond the range of hearing.” (BOOK FOUR, CHAPTER 8: THE STAIRS OF CIRITH UNGOL) And after that, the gates of Minas Morgul opened and Sauron’s army left for battle

You know, the point of these videos is to explain things simply. "the light let Sauron know Minas Morgul was ready" is better than three paragraphs from the book. Just tell people to read the book rather than pasting paragraphs.
