Every year, we suffer through that seasonal time of your daily commute where you've got sunglare in the evening, but need a clear shield in the morning. Or, depending on your location and time-zone, you may be in the crowd that deals with the bright early morning sunrise, but it's dark when you go home. For Arai owners up until now, you would either have to carry a second shield, or burn your eyes out! The Arai Pro Shade system changes things. Attached to a standard SAI MAX-Vision Pinlock-ready shield, the sun visor flips up and down as needed with ease. Tunnel? No problem! Sun peeking out from behind the clouds on a gloomy day? Just swing the shade down until the brightness goes away. The Arai Pro Shade System comes with the hinged sun-visor pre-attached to an included SAI MAX-Vision Pinlock-ready shield. Pinlock inserts for the shield are sold separately.

Opted for this Pro Shade System visor when I bought a Profile V helmet recently. In the past I have used an internal visor. I find this external visor to be excellent. I don't find it too short. While it doesn't go down as far as some of the internal sun visors I've used it certainly does it's job and does it well. I like the way it also works as a mini peak. The brow vents function well in my opinion, and perhaps best of all- it makes for a more compact helmet. The sun glare bets pretty severe here in Australia and I've had no trouble with this visor. I would recommend it to anyone being put off by the lack of internal sun visors with Arai helmets. The Profile V furthermore is an excellent helmet. Well balanced, quiet, comfortable, easy to use once you get the hang of it.

I have just gotten a Corsair X with the sun shade system (sent via free shipping in no time at all from Revzilla) and I love the feel of the helmet. The sun shade does not come down far enough. Oh well. The new vas system is kind of a pain, but it is manageable. Thanks for your reviews!

I used to agree with you that Arai should provide more coverage and should have made the shade a bit lower. But I have found that I prefer to look at my GPS and rear view mirrors without the shade. The current coverage is perfect for my profile. I like the Pro Shade system the way it is.

I’m a bit late but that’s pretty much what Arai says they intended, they wanted to let you see your dashboard and mirrors without the shade but the street ahead with the shade.

Bravo on the review! Informative as always. I think you guys are the first to review the Pro-Shade (in English) other than Arai America. This however showcased a lot more in terms of details of the Pro Shade. I noticed the smoke visor has a gasket on the top, but not below. Does air creep in between the main shield and the smoke visor? Thanks

RevZilla hello guys it's been same time since I pass some words with you. so down to the matter at hand. i have left my AGV and now have a ARAI rebel. i have road had it on the road yet as it's still snowing outside. PRO SHADE i had my new helmet on my head with the pro shade on. i like it sitting on my bike I can see my clock easy and didn't have any issue with it it smooth operation and functional it good and works. When you see what you get for your money it's not a bad deal. it worth to say .. that a pinlock is also it the deal. i also have a protint pinlock that mine be better for some other riders out there. i use both depending on what type of riding I am doing. keep up the great work and keeping it real is what we all love about this channel. your johm

It's called "Transitions", like the eyeglasses that do the same. They make them for Shoei helmets and they aren't cheap. $150 give or take

SickMetalAddict the term is photochromatic. There are some available. Transitions are a brand/product name that uses Photochromatic.

Just bought the Signet Q with ProShades about 5 weeks ago and my wife and I do like them but I'd have to agree on lowering the profile a bit for those sunrise/sunset rides. Other than that....We do like the convenience and it's not hard at all to flip up or down while riding. Never had an Arai helmet before but these are great.

But then the profile is bigger when the shade is up. it would look like a motocross helmet, and with more surface area for higher wind resistance and/or whistles.

RevZilla hi there, what arai helmets are SAI shield compatible? I bought a proshade system not knowing that there are 2 kinds, one is SAI and the other one is VAS. The proshade i bought won't fit my Arai Quantum X Oriental.

SAI is the previous generation of helmets: RX-Q, Signet-Q, Vector 2, Corsair-V, and the original Defiant. You need the VAS-V Pro Shade System as you've found. -DrewZilla

Got this proshade shield from buying a Rapide IR (defiant for Asian market). And I hate it.. looking straight and it's dark, looking down a bit, and it's suddenly bright again.. it makes me dizzy.. I sell it to a friend, and bought a smoke flat visor and a clear max vision..

Yes it does, but that is the trade off of adding a drop down shade system considering Arai does not design helmets with Internal Drop Down systems.

Steve Edwards Yes, but the photochromic insert wouldn't be as effective. The photochromic tinting is controlled by the amount of UV if I'm not mistaken, and Arai shields already block a lot of UV, so the photochromic insert, being on the inside of the face shield, won't get very dark at all. -DrewZilla

I can confirm that our does not shade when behind a tinted visor. I have riding gogales that transition and when I wear them behind my smoke shield, when I flip up the shield, they are clear.

I have Shoei's transitional visor system. Lots of people dismissed it without ever trying it, likening it to their old transition lenses, but it changes quick as anything. So sad they don't make it anymore.

However, my Arai Corsair V 'Ducati flavour' is my helmet of choice... Unfortunately, I don't use the BSC w/PC shield very often...

Arai makes designs their helmets to pass the very stringent Snell safety rating, and helmets with internal sun visors do not pass the Snell safety tests. Therefore, they've created the external sun visor. -DrewZilla

Yep, an internal sun visor is much, much better than this You just swivel a handle on the outside and it pops down, bug splat free. Don't need it any more, push the handle again and it goes back up. Having to touch the visor always gets fingerprints and scratches onit.

Arai's Pro Shade system annoyingly can't be combined with a shield of any tint. And as anyone familiar with drop down sun visors knows, they're never dark enough on their own. You pay top dollar for their helmets, but Arai is going to make all safety decisions for you in using their helmet. No thanks, I'll give my money to manufacturers that let me choose if I need to use a tinted shield with a drop down sun visor to avoid being blinded when riding into the sun, and for extra UV protection. I stopped using a Ram-X I got on closeout for that very reason, and ride with a much cheaper, but very comfortable Scorpion EXO-CT220 because I can use a dark tint shield in combination with the drop down sun visor. Good grief, the drop down sun visors can be raised out of the way if it's too dark, and then it would be no different than riding with a tinted shield, and Arai allows that.
