Than you so much, sir. I just recently got back into retro gaming after being obsessed with crt tvs, monitors and shader customization in retroarch. So i decided to take out one of the big boys to refresh my memory and modified one of the HDR Cyberlab presets you showed in one of your videos. i just did some tweaks to the mask here and there but modified the color to match my NTSC crt. I now have the most true to life (IMO) looking shaders, as I was looking at them side by side CRT to OLED.In terms of brightness and detail, OLED can look great when sitting from an optimal distance, Motion clarity is still a little behind though, but we're getting there. I didn't know HDR was a thing in retroarch, it did help a lot to compensate for brightness. All of this I learned, thanks to your channel. 🎉

@@glowinTHX Any way I could see your presets to mess around with? I've also been using HDR Cyberlabs with my OLED and I'm curious to see how yours compares to my tweaks.
@glowinTHX12 күн бұрын
@ToxicToucan sure. Actually, I have a real CRT next to my OLED, I found the sweetspot for the paper white value to be around 200, you need to make sure that you're not losing any detail in the bright spots. The maximum peak brightness needs to be accurate to your actual peak brightness. Your tv gets way better results when set to dynamic tone mapping instead of HGIG. HGIG is better in most cases, but it looks too dim when using these shaders, DTM makes up for the loss in brightness and it works perfectly IMO. I have a Sony Trinitron wega connected via Component next to my setup, and the accuracy is quite good. Another tip, is to set presets to color accurate, instead of mask accurate. Prepending a plain tvtweaks shader before these presets, gets you closer to the gamma settings of a perfectly calibrated CRT. I won't lie, the real deal looks better, but not by much, OLED is way more convenient to use though, and you won't be missing much compared to a real CRT. Just leave all other settings as they are, once you find the mask that you like. I hope it helps.
@ToxicToucan12 күн бұрын
@ Thanks! I appreciate the tips! My wife told me under no circumstances am I allowed to bring a Wega home lol. At least not the bigger ones. The 4k Oled is the closest I've gotten to that CRT benefits I had growing up. I'll have to check my tone mapping.

It looks like the dirty shader works well with large sprites, as well as sprites that consist of more basic shapes and color with less variation. The clean shader works well on games with smaller sprites that are still trying to pack a lot of detail in.

I would love to use the shaders in 4k but every time I try to load a 4K Shader retroarch refuses to display anything. Not sure what it is, but with these crt presets, the picture resembles more to a very high quality, time-corrected tape recording rather than a live picture on a crt monitor. Not sure if that makes any sense

@RetroCrisis You'll know right away once you crank that setting all the way up lol. It "fills" in pixel edges that for some reason get dulled out and cut off by default. It also brings out the colors more making the overall image more vibrant and a bit sharper while still being able to blend dithering patterns.

Lovely presents but can you maybe reduce the deconvergence / chromatic aberration on resolutions lower than 4k, on the Steam deck with the 720p preset it looks like something you'd put on the red and blue tinted 3D glasses to view. I just turn it off myself for now in the shader parameters.

@@RetroCrisis for 720p I found a deconvergence of just 1 notch which I think is 0.10 worked fine. Then maybe 1 or 2 steps more for 1080/1440. My eyes are fairly sensitive to it though.
