@@RetroCrisis A lot of people had Composite tvs, at a certain point... However, I believe the Trinitron shadow-masks may have had thinner division lines. This would cause less Light-Bleed from hopping over the mask-lines. It would be interesting if you could get hold of an average "Standard Definition" tv... and show us a direct comparison between the actual TV photo, and the resulting Filter. Also, for showing final result, maybe do a half screen.. where as the before and after. Where as the left side of the screen... would show a left side cut of Before. And the right side would show a Right Side half cut of the After results. The game wouldnt have to be synced.. just similar in timeframe. Anyway... your results look much better than standard filters. Thank you for your hard work. *more notes: - Later model CRT tvs, like the panasonic I owned... were capable of higher resolutions. As such, the shadow-mask were higher density, as well - I used to own a Sega "Turbo" arcade machine. I believe it still had the Original arcade monitor... rather than a later revision version. It appears to look different from other 19" monitors... and thus I suspect it had a different shadow mask pitch. Also.. I believe each monitor has a specific color profile... where as, its values had specific limits, saturation levels, and these all based on a specific curve. As such... the same image shown on my Turbo machine... may have had slightly different colors, when displayed on something like a Broadcast monitor. I dont know if this is accounted for... such as having individual monitor "Presets", based on the actual monitors specs.

This is SO REAL. I'm perplexed, it's the first video I see on composite direct capture where KZbin on 1080p quality on my 1080p screen just looks straight up like a CRT being filmed properly. You're a freaking wizard, Harry, I mean, Retro Crisis! My only barely related nitpick is it being an Aperture Grille mask, not shadow or slot mask, it lacks a bit of the more popular masks blending effect, it's too orderly by the nature of the very mask. Wow, if you can do this composite effect and feel inclined to do so on another type of mask, please do. To give you an idea of how great I think your achievement is, I can easily show this video for people outside the CRT hobby and they too can be surprised of the faithful recreation, your sorcery.

I did a comparison on my TV with Kirby's Adventure and Super Mario Brothers with both RF and composite plugged in for maximum brightness on video 2... In Super Mario Brothers, the orange bricks are very very close. The yellow shade on the item block is a little darker. The green bushes are more yellow green. And lastly, while the sky is roughly the same brightness, it is a little more in between light purple and light blue. As for Kirby's Adventure, on the same stage that you showcased, almost every color was darker except for the darker two of the shades of green used for the hills in the back. And using just RF, the colors were pretty dark and saturated. The TV I use is JVC.

I’ve been working on an NES composite to RGB AI model lately, so I’ve been looking at a fair bit lately. You might get something like what you see here if the TV has a really good comb filter, but having used some of the same games as this video, I would expect to see more color fringing, shimmer, and also there are some differences (positional jitter?) between the even and odd fields. Admittedly, this is based on my digital captures, so the appearance might be different on an actual CRT.

@@AquaticMammalOnBicycle You'd be surprised, I had a 21" Grundig and 14" Matsui CRTs back in the day, composite actually looked superb on both - zero fuzz with a really clean, natural, picture, RF signal was insanely good. I have to tip my hat whenever I see the unique artifacts of the NES accurately recreated. I only wish the capture device had been able to secure a flat temporal 60fps.
