As a 73 year old fan of this group, this is probably my favorite Arcade Fire song. I love them all, but this one has the energy and emotion I look for in today's pop songs. I often wish there were a much longer version because I ultimately end up listening to it several times in a row.

For me, the line that most strikes a chord is, "Hear the soldier groan, we'll go at it alone." How often is it that our leaders throw us out there to face the worst, then abandon us? Whether it be the soldier in war (anyone ever see the movie or read the book of the same title, "The thin red line," pertaining to WWII's battle on Guadalcanal?) or first responders at a accident/fire/shooting/terrorist event or even the personal care workers at a health care facility-those are the unsung heroes in our midst. It is the average man, woman or child doing their best for another that gives the most and deserves our praise. That is the real meaning of the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery. If you've never been, you owe to yourself and the fallen to go and spend some time there in silence. If there is a place for reverence in this world it is there.

Arcade Fire is the calibre of band that serves as a rub-it-in the-face response to any nostalgia tragic who whines and whinges that 'There's no good music these days' or 'Music these days is rubbish'! They obviously have not heard the powerful, finely crafted songs of Arcade Fire.

You got a lot of downvotes for that comment, but it makes a lot of sense. Intervention can refer to a military intervention or divine intervention, and this song combines the two. Lyrically, this song is about religion being corrupted for war and the people who pay the price with their lives, but it's such a fucking energetic and gloriously joyful piece that the phrase 'divine intervention' does not sound out of place when describing it.

During the Neon Bible tour Arcade Fire had the finest ensemble of musicians in rock music history IMO. And all the touring musicians - Marika, Colin Stetson and Kelly Pratt - were as up for it as the regular guys. Sadly never to repeated. With the world in such a mess right now I'd love to see Butler bringing that tour back, with the same musicians, but it's wishful thinking.

It seems to be more of a criticism of the church for not protecting and taking care of the pastors and other church leaders (soldier) who even when their lives fall apart are expected to keep everything in perfect order which is impossible. So I wouldn't say it is atheistic but rather a critique on the human institution of the church.
