Not only do you not spawn with all your power pellets, you also have to EARN them on the pinball. Mess up on the pinball? Have fun completing the maze without any help. Some pro players might THINK it's no problem but there is a problem. The ghosts in that game are RELENTLESS. Throw out everything you know about ghost behaviors from The original Pac-Man. Every single ghost even the one that's supposed to be dumb is insanely aggressive. They want blood and they will get it. Also did I mention they can turn around whenever they want? No more predicability. Good luck.

Jr. could possibly have dethroned Ms. as the unofficial best of the series in my opinion aside from two caveats. One, by 1983 Pac-Mania had certainly cooled down considerably and two, the gorgeous balance of challenge vs frustration that was Ms. went too far on the difficult side. I remember it being quite an achievement in arcades at the time for anyone to get past the first maze. For me personally, the scrolling screen and aggressive ghost AI was just fine but making the "bonus" items both slow your roll with fatter dots in their path AND bee-line it to destroy your power pellets was a bit excessive. But hey, that's just me.

Fun fact: the power pellets’ exploding animation actually uses previously unused graphics that originated in the original Pac-Man’s source code. In other words, the original Pac-Man arcade game has an explosion sprite hidden in the ROM, and the developers of Junior Pac-Man used said sprite to implement a new gameplay mechanic.

The only difference found in the fan game Pacman5 is that the hearts in intermission 3 circles around with one appearing before the big one and another dissapearing after the big one and jr pac man and nom nom actually make contact and close eyes. Other than that they are the same.

Just because Namco accepted the game into the series doesn't mean they were happy of it's creation. Namco was never happy with Midway making their own Pac-Man games and that's why they eventually took distribution rights from Midway. Any five seconds of research proves that.
