Nice vid! I wanted to add one more advice for people; consider buying mid-range and premium fightsticks used on Ebay or craigslist. Fightsticks are durable in general, and the sticks and buttons are easily exchanged. You can easily find a premium stick for a midrange pricing, and midrange sticks under $100. I wouldnt buy something like a Qanba Drone or Hori mini used only because the knockoff parts tend to break faster, and you might end up spending your savings on just quickly replacing parts shortly after purchase.

misterkeebler love it ❤️👍 i was actually planning to make a video on used sticks too, maybe down the road when i make more modding video. Thank you for sharing 🙏

Very Informative! My advice tho is just look for any fightstick that's over $100 from name brands like hori, qanba, razer, etc and try to look for them on sale any time you get online. Typically anything you get over $100 is gonna be great regardless of whatever parts they use. Alternatively, you could go to local arcades and find some fightsticks there. If you're lucky, maybe you'll find an arcade stick at stores like TJ Max, or Ross where they get their clothes and stuff from other stores that didn't sell those items. That's where I picked up a hori soulcalibur vi xbox one fightstick for $42. If you're not picky, you'll definitely have no trouble finding a fightstick in the $100+ price range.

I've been using my Qanba Obsidian for about four months now, and I love it! Prior to my purchase, my friend was letting me use his Razer Panthera, which also felt really nice. I have to say though, the easy access to the inside was a nice feature of the Panthera that I kind of miss. Still, I'm glad I got the stick that I did. Unmodded, it plays and feels really nice. At the very least, now I have a reference to look back on, if I ever feel the need to get another stick. Thanks for this video! On a side note: the aforementioned friend also has a Hori RAP4 that he converted to a HitBox layout. He says it works amazingly when playing Tetris.

Most fight sticks are easily converted to Brook UFB setups later on down the road, and adapters and such also always get released. Also PC players don't even have to worry about next gen console stuff. I'd say if you want something, as long as it supports modding (especially PCB modding) go ahead and do it. If you want to build your own, definitely go ahead and do it. You can convert the PCB later and soak up all the savings now when everything is marked down. Also Tekken and SF will be sticking around for at least a couple of years once next gen consoles drop, especially Tekken. That's been made pretty clear with both of those games. The only next gen FG we know we're gonna get right now is GG Strive and I suppose also KoF 15. Everything else is up in the air. I'd say if you really want to buy or build a setup, do it. Don't let next gen consoles scare you off.

Deluge FGC i think most people just dont want to deal with the DIY now, and then having to DIY again when the ps5 comes out, i get what you mean tho, i think these days people just dont have the time, when they have time, theres family stuff, kids, school, work to do. Sometimes just buying will save so much headache and time. As much as i love tekken 7 and sf5, and i want a new version,i agree with you, its probably going to be a while. I am waiting for guilty gear, gran blue fantasy, and kof15. 🙏 thank you for watching, and thank you for sharing your thoughts
@HystericalHuntress4 жыл бұрын
@@JoystickNY T8 and SF6 are a while off, same with MK12, but we'll see a lot of new games earlier into next-gen for sure. KoF15 and GG Strive are the big two I can think of. Also yeah, modding isn't for everyone but a lot of people into arcade sticks tend to enjoy it, myself included. Brook UFBing a stick is a lot easier than it used to be with all the headers included, you don't even need to solder anymore. I mainly just like the prices. I got my RAP N for barely over $100 and then I put a Brook UFB I snagged for $55 in it, a set of 8 Crown 202MX 30mm buttons, a 24mm Seimitsu PS-14(tactile click) for the Options button, and also bought a whole new top panel. I got a plexi too, put some art between the custom top panel, cut the plexi hole to 35mm (the panel I bought was a 35mm hole mount for Korean levers) and screwed it down. .boom. Now I have a Fujin III (had a Fanta before it) lever in here to go with the 202MX buttons and this is honestly my dream setup paired with the UFB. The RAP N is a very sturdy stick, it's an absolute tank. The aftermarket panel and the plexi makes the collar only lightly protrude through the top, so it's still visible but it's super low profile like on the Omni which I like. The buttons sit nice, I got custom art, a lag free board that works with all consoles and my options button for pausing and such has a unique tactile feel which I love. I wouldn't trade this stick for anything in the world, I put risers on the back of the stick pads to elevate it slightly in my lap to compensate for the natural slope it had seated on my lap (I play with the stick in my lap) and that just put the finishing touch on it. There is literally nothing I could wish was better on this setup now.. and if not for all the holiday pricing I wouldn't have been able to get it. I'm a PC player so next gen compatibility doesn't worry me, especially since the UFB gets firmware updates to cover me for tournaments and I only play Tekken 7 anyway which won't be getting a new game for a while. For those really looking to put a lot of effort and care into their setup, I think now is the best time to do it. For those just getting started, they could also find something cheap like a Qanba Drone for $60 and swap a few parts in it, get settled in. This may not be the time to spend $500+ on your dream setup, but for building your own perfect setup with a UFB or getting a cheat starter stick I think now is the best time honestly.

Great guide to fight sticks. I did want to mention that the Razer Pantera Evo is not a midrange fight stick, but a premium fight stick. The difference between it and the regular Pantera is the buttons, ease to remove the artwork, and it has a headphone jack. The mechanical switches feel like Sanwas. I have it and a Hori that has Sanwas and they feel very similar.
@JoystickNY4 жыл бұрын
Jose A i totally understand what you mean 😊, it was simply my personal rating, i think everyone has a diff judging of the sticks, i rated it mid range because it doesn’t have detachable cable, no easy access to internal hardware, and the design is very simple. No special features like detachable lever, no led, no strap clip, etc, if you know what i mean? Because in your case, all mid range sticks with sanwa would he consider premium, wouldnt you agree? 🙏 thank you for sharing your thoughts

If anyone want buy a mini stick, I recommend Qanba Drone only, because it has enough space for resting your left hand on the top of the stick, not on its edge. Let's say it has to be at least 9 cm from the joystick to left edge. Altough Qanba Obsidian and Razer are star fight sticks, I don't like Qanba's rubber dome "Option" key and Razer's protrusive cable plug. Finally I picked Hori fighting edge, swapped sanwa parts. Noir layout is quite comfortable.

Most fightsticks are really easy to mod, even if you need to install a board later on for specific console support, it's not too difficult. Especially if you enjoy tinkering with your gear or if you're willing to learn how, then just go ahead and buy whatever stick you want. My own recommendation is try to find any of the $150+ premium fightsticks for around $100 or less. You'll pretty much be good with anything that has legit arcade parts and a solid enclosure/case. Don't settle for one of the budget options, cuz you'll just end up upgrading parts and spending enough that you could've just bought a better stick to begin with.

You mean a stick that has both layouts? Because the astro city 1st player is Noir layout and 2nd player is viewlix layout. Both of them exisit, but not together, is that what you mean?
@AvengerII4 жыл бұрын
@@ecapsdira No, they don't make TwinSticks like the Sega Saturn Virtua Stick Pro from the late 1990s anymore. You have to commission those stick builds and most of what you get are joysticks with Viewlix button layout that have Astro City artwork but it's not actual Astro City button layout AND art at an authentic (or close to it) arcade size. What Arcade Shock is selling on its website are customized HRAP V joysticks with Astro City-like artwork and they're one player, not the 2-player configurations some people are looking for. You could buy, at least a few years back, the actual Astro City panels but they may have stopped producing those in Japan. Arcades are slowly dying out in Japan as well. I'm pretty sure at this point you'd have to custom-make or pay someone to custom-manufacture an Astro City panel if these guys even know the measurements to use and have access to good metal that won't rust right away. I've seen people make panels out of steel that began rusting right away because they didn't know what they were doing and chose metal alloy that wasn't resistant against corrosion. Heck, I have older joysticks I had to take steel wool to and spray Rustoleum on because they the metal panels WERE rusting when I bought them (but not too badly yet). It was never cheap to built a joystick from arcade parts. The panels alone (for the arcade cabinets) are at least $130-$150. Sad to think that you could buy at one time the Saturn Twin Stick with the Astro City artwork and button layout for under $200!

I actually received the Mayflash 500 as a Christmas gift. I actually like the stick a lot. It is *heavy* and I prefer the weight. I have several systems it works on so that is a plus for me. Controller connection might be annoying for some people, but I do not tend to move around too much so the controller doesn't bother me and I think it actually reduces latency than not, which is more important to me. I have not opened it up yet, but out of the box I think it's great to start with if you have larger hands and prefer added weight to your sticks so they don't flop around. Being made in China I did not expect much, but so far so good. I'm not very good and my eyesight I think is going but playing beat 'em ups and shooters is great with it too.

There's one thing I have to correct... I don't know if it was said on this video, or someone else's video review of the Hori joysticks that use the Hayabusa levers BUT the Hayabusa control levers from the original production run (2012) and TODAY both use Omron microswitches. I just recently got a Hayabusa during Arcade Shock's Cyber Week sale and had to take the lever apart for a mod to fit into a joystick which had an issue with the 5-prong harness adaptor overlapping with the X-button (which happens in Qanba and HRAP 2/3 cases when you try to swap out the JLF with a Hayabusa lever). During the process of removing the baseplate for a simple mod (the mod is unscrewing the PCB board from the Hayabusa base and hot gluing it (with a heat gun) to the lip of the baseplate after the baseplate is screwed back on; this lowers the adaptor prong to a 30-degree DOWN angle so that the joystick harness doesn't cross and interfere with the X-button action), I noticed the Hayabusa microswitches were Omrons. I think all my Hayabusas (I think I have six of these levers now) have Omron microswitches. They all generally feel the same. Someone else had said that Hori switched to Matsushita/Panasonic microswitches after the early runs of Hayabusa levers used Omron switches. Well, that point is moot now. Panasonic isn't making microswitches (that can be used in joystick levers) anymore so EVERYBODY (Seimitsu, Sanwa, Hori) had to redesign/retailor their existing joystick lines if they used Panasonic microswitches. That's why Seimitsu changed the LS-32 recently and retweaked the design to use Omron's. There's still a supply of LS-32's online that use the old Panasonic switches but it's shrinking. Newer-build LS-32's are clearly marked as new with the Omron microswitches and those are all post-2017 production. Seimitsu is in the process of switching the entire LS-series lines to the alternate microswitch. Heh -- all my LS-32's are pre-2017. Guess I'll have to mention that fact if I ever sell my surplus LS-32 levers!

A while ago I bought the Qanba Q1W for $60 new for the 2.4 Ghz wireless capabilities and wired capabilities and I only had a PC and PS3 which it could play. It also works on Android and it is a nice entry level stick. I modded it with Seimitsu LS-32 and the normal Seimitsu buttons. I also bought a used Qanba Q4 RAF which was originally a $150 fight stick during the PS3 era but I bought it for $60 and it had Sanwa parts pre-installed. It had a nice metal base with I think is felt bottom which works really well on the lap and it has a pretty decent weight and size. It also had a cool translucent clear red housing. The only problem was the hinged door because the plastic latch wore out. The Q4 RAF can play both on the PS3 and Xbox 360 which means I can play it on multiple newer systems with an adapter or on PC when in Xbox 360 mode. Both of these sticks has a mode button that switches from dpad to analog so I can play the older Touhou Project games with either stick. I think I got my money's worth for these two sticks since I don't have current consoles nor planning on buying newer consoles and mostly play on PC. Strangely my used Q4 RAF had only clear red buttons and the red balltop was replaced with a Seimitsu clear smoke bubble balltop which looks pretty nice though I couldn't get the balltop off nor could I remove the quick disconnects off the buttons but since I don't play hard on my sticks normally, I don't really need to replace the buttons.

I prefer the HRAP N to the HRAP V. The button layout on the HRAP V which is what Mad Catz used for all or most of its joystick lines isn't as comfortable. The Noir buttons follows the natural curvature of your hand which makes extended use of that joystick more comfortable, IMHO. The Noir button layout is comparable to the Astro City button layout used on the HRAP 2 and HRAP 3 joystick lines. The Viewlix button layout became preferred only because that's the style Mad Catz chose to use in their joystick line. For years, it was more difficult to buy Hori joysticks in the West than it was Japan and the rest of Asia. That's why the Viewlix layout became dominant. I'm glad Hori does manufacture Noir-layout joysticks because honestly that button layout is more ergonomic. The HRAP 1 button layout was comparable to the Viewlix but those leftmost buttons on that faceplate were basically unusable. The angle they were positioned was too extreme and uncomfortable for many people. A LOT of us (including me!) basically stopped using the leftmost buttons on HRAP 1 faceplates and either disconnected our leftmost buttons and shifted the button wiring to the right, or removed those leftmost buttons altogether and plugged their button holes. As unused as most right-most Viewlix buttons are, at least they're not positioned at an angle where they're uncomfortable to use! The first HRAP N Pro release was the Soul Calibur V joystick that Hori sold in February 2012. There are still copies of this joystick out there and they're not expensive; they usually sell at original MSRP ($130 or less). Be aware they're last-generation joysticks so they're PS3 or XBox 360-native. The Soul Calibur V joystick is not branded as an HRAP per se but it IS essentially an HRAP SA with all-Sanwa parts (although I traded out the Sanwa JLF lever on mine for a Hayabusa control lever after Hori started selling Hayabusa levers separate from the Fighting Edge joysticks; that Soul Calibur V joystick is probably my best HRAP/Hori joystick right now. My first Hayabusa control lever is installed in the PS3 SC V joystick base that I still own to this day). The HRAP N3 SA is the first mass-market (Japan-only) generic release of the joystick case originally used for the Soul Calibur V joystick. (The PS3 version of the Soul Calibur V joystick retains the plug-in the XBox 360 version used for an audio jack; there's also a USB slot on the Soul Calibur V joystick to plug in a keyboard or something like that?) The HRAP N4 is just the HRAP N3 with a PS4-compatible PCB and Hori arcade parts replacing the Sanwa parts from the HRAP N3 series and its licensed variants (Soul Calibur V, Doa or Alive 5, Soul Calibur VI, and Tekken 7). All these these joysticks have PS3/PS4 and XBox One/360 counterparts that are pretty much the same thing aside from proprietary, licensed PCBs. The Soul Calibur VI joystick Hori sold was branded as an HRAP Pro joystick. Few of us seemed to buy that joystick which is why they're generally on sale for half or less this holiday season! Frankly, I think it's an ugly-looking stick either way (PS4 blue, XBox One red) with undesirable transparent plastic casing in unattractive colors. I'd spend the extra bucks and get the HRAP N4 myself for a more attractive case color.

AvengerII wow that is a lot of good information right there, took me a while to read it all, i feel you. Somehow i got comfortable with the Rap 4 and viewlix, i do notice the noir layout fits the human hand more cuz our ring finger is shorter which the button technically should be lower. My very first stick was the hori ex2, it is actually a noir layout stick, later on it broke and i threw it out becuz i didnt want to deal with soldering and ended buying a madcatz and it was the easy to swap cables, and since then i been using viewlix until now.

@@JoystickNY I don't think they ever "officially" sold the HRAP N3 SA in the States but a small number were imported by Hori and sold through their American website (I THINK) and Arcade Shock which gets a lot of Hori exclusives. I've never seen the HRAP N Pro in stores but did see the XBOx One version of the Soul Calibur VI (an HRAP N4 licensed variant) joystick on-sale for $70 in-store at Marshalls. I ultimately couldn't use the Soul Calibur VI joystick I bought and returned it since it wasn't compatible with the emulators I use on my PC. Oh, it'll work on Steam for Microsoft-licensed program but for MAME and retroconsole emulators you're SOL. Those are grey software MS will NEVER let licensed MS product be compatible with. For emulator programs, use Hori joysticks with PCB's made for PlayStation systems OR get a Brooks Fighting Board PCB or MC Cthulu. All my HORI PlayStation joysticks, even the PS2-era joysticks, are compatible with Windows 10 and have no issues with any emulator or fan-made game to date. The officially-licensed "XBox" controllers would just no work with the emulators no matter what I tried. I have seen the HRAP V at GameStop and a local computer parts store, Micro Center. Micro Center had a big sale, 50% reduction ($75 for $150 joysticks) on its remaining HRAP V's and sold out of both the blue and white HRAP V's they had in stock. I do NOT like the HRAP V case style so I was never going to buy those! It's a very good deal, though, for people who want a more affordable stick with quality parts. There's absolutely no reason, IMHO, to swap out Hayabusa parts for Sanwa or Seimitsu. Personally, I think the Hayabusa buttons (which I wish they would get back in, in red and white at Arcade Shock and other parts vendors!) are about equivalent to the Sanwa pushbuttons but the Hayabusa lever is better-performing than either the Sanwa JLF or the Seimitsu control levers I've used. The only Seimitsu buttons that I like are the limited edition Pearl buttons which feel like the Sanwa OBSF buttons. It's gotta be the plastic and design of the button because they use the same PS-14-D microswitch used in the 24mm Seimitsu buttons!!! Very comfortable button, a shame the Pearl is long out of production. I've never liked the JLF all that much, very bad gate design and switching to an octogate didn't help me. It's just a bad gate/actuator combination. I'm very fine with using square gates on other Japanese control levers but they don't grind or "get in the way" like the gate on the JLF does. The Seimitsu LS-40 and LS-56 are fussy joysticks you CAN overpower on your inputs. The LS-56 in particular has an ultra-short throw and I just never got used to it but I can use the LS-40 on occasion and it's a very good joystick for traditional shooters and most fighting games. The Hayabusa to me feels like a finer-tuned LS-32 which just happens to use JLF clone parts. I go back-and-forth constantly between the LS-32 and Hayabusa all the time and am very comfortable with both. My new control lever buys are all Hayabusa at this point but I won't throw away the LS-32s I have, especially not in the HRAP 3 SE which is a rare production joystick! (I did replace the PS-14-G buttons in my HRAP 3 SE because they just weren't comfortable for me. I replaced them with similarly colored Sanwa OBSF buttons.) I might sell some surplus LS-32's used at some point along with an LS-40 and LS-58 (which I know I'll never use again) but I will keep the LS-32's in most of the joystick bases I have them in. It's still a very good control lever. The JLF I would never go back to (you know it's overrated and trouble-prone with all the replacement parts and mods for it online!!!) and the LS-56/-58 is my absolutely least-favorite Seimitsu lever.

AvengerII you have a lot of experience with arcade parts. Impressive. Is that a hobby or your job is related to arcades?
@AvengerII4 жыл бұрын
@@JoystickNY Hobby, and I used to spend a lot of time on the Shoryuken boards where we talked this stuff to death. I kind of left it for 5 years and really didn't play many games in that time. I've semi-unretired and am noticing some things. They've discontinued some parts (as if that never happens ALL the time!) but the main thing is that the disintegration of arcades is affecting Japan more. I thought it was curious Hori got into arcade parts manufacturing (and supplying arcades with those parts) after they introduced the original Fighting Edge joystick in 2012 (considering the arcades ARE dying out in Japan) but they may have been trying to earn "street cred" with hobbyists who build or mod joysticks. It's definitely worked out for them. Seimitsu and Sanwa I'm sure have been affected although Sanwa continues to be the most preferred supplier for most joystick lines. Seimitsu is more niche than it was before although they (Hori and other hardware manufacturers) never have manufactured that many home console joysticks since the early 2000's with Seimitsu parts. I think Mark Julio could tell you more about that... He has a ton of joysticks, a virtual museum of major joysticks (130+) made in Japan since at least the early, mid-1990s! There were a lot more manufacturers using or emulating Seimitsu parts in the 1990s than there are now. Arcade Shock probably customizes more "Seimitsu Edition" HRAP's than Hori itself ever produced!

I didn't watch this before and I just bought a Nintendo Switch Hori RAP Chun Li Edition. It was just too beautiful to pass on it. I surely will need a converter for using it on a future PS5

MadCatz Alpha, in my opinion, it's the best for young kids who's getting into fighting games.

Fahad yea, i agree. And its affordable enough to even see if they are even interested in it before proceeding in to a more expensive one 👍

Hi, JoyStickNY. Do you think that an arcade stick with a metal surface (like Victrix Pro FS) feels better than one with a plastic surface (like MADCATZ TE2)? (regardless of the other parts)
@JoystickNY3 жыл бұрын
mostly personally preference, definitely wont affect game play, i personally cant really tell what my palm is on when playing becuz my hand is moving alot. Metal will give you a heavier a stick, often more stable and bit more expensive. 😊

The Hori fighting EDGE, you are paying for the metal but you could take it off and customize it to your will’s content and then put it back on

Yup, i just feel that taking it off would be wasteful, because it does look pretty cool, and we are paying for the metal. 🙏❤️ thank you for watching

I actually use that stick a few times at work on a switch, its not bad, but i havent used it extensively to judge it, but it feels quite simple, it may not he as comfortable or effect as compare to a dual shock controller imo
