There it is...that ear-piercing shrillness that so many SMS games have.

The Genesis port was pretty close though still had some slowdown issues.

This is what happens when you replace most of the original team with fans of their work. In a 1988 interview before release, the topics ranged from worry that the pig men vomit might be confused for something less silly and gross to how frustrating it was to see zombies being over used in Japanese games - it's also why unicorns were cut and the team had to think way outside the box. A lot of what we think of the series identity came from this installment. In the end, so much painstaking effort went into memorable sprite work and animating their personality, that it wouldn't be entirely inaccurate to call this the Metal Slug of the 80's. Even an unfinished playable preview was just way ahead of the curve. It's no wonder why even a graphically downgraded port was the first killer app for Genesis. As for the Master System...I mean, there's a sacrifice of performance for pretty visuals and it's so easy that you can only really lose if you resist the temptation to upgrade all your armor pieces and abuse your invincibility magic. I still enjoy it as a relaxation exercise, but I love every version of this game that exists. In fact, the second I finish this comment, I'm going to play through at least 3 ports to celebrate the holiday. Thanks for the timely reminder.
@RetroComparisonsАй бұрын
I'm always learning something new from you. I didn't realize most of the team was replaced for this. I'd say they did a damn good job because I love all 3 games that I've played from this series. I hope you got a chance to play these last night.

Got to admit the developers on the SMS were very ambitious trying to bring this over. While it doesn’t look too bad the frame rate is what kills it.
@RetroComparisonsАй бұрын
It's pretty good for the system limitations and if I only had a SMS at the time I would have been thrilled to have this. Having said that, I totally agree that they were probably a little too over ambitious at the expense of the performance.
@MKF30Ай бұрын
Not a bad port. Little slower, I'd pick arcade here but the genesis version was nearly identical. Cool comparison.
@RetroComparisonsАй бұрын
For the console I think it was pretty good but the Genesis & Saturn ports are the way to go if played on Sega hardware. Thanks for watching as always my friend!

Bill, now this is more like it for a pseudo-horror vibe for a comparison on Halloween: you can't go wrong with a little Ghouls 'n Ghosts in your life. Let's get it out of the way: the arcade version is one of the GOATs of 80s arcade games, so the SMS was never going to be able to match the CPS original especially since neither the Genesis nor SuperGrafx versions quite reached the arcade version either. But...the Master System does a pretty darn good job here. Yeah, it doesn't look nearly as good; it doesn't sound very good at all; and, it's a bit slow; however, it adds a bit of interesting additions with the shop, plus it's still a ton of fun...and is a lot nicer than the NES port of Ghosts 'n Goblins was.
@RetroComparisonsАй бұрын
I think the slowdowns in this SMS actually help a little lol! I've never gotten far in any of the games from this series but I love them anyways. The 3 that I've played are all fantastic and are perfect for this time of year.
@baronhausenphefferАй бұрын
@@RetroComparisons Haha, that would be my reaction, too. If someone said, "Ugh, this Master System port of Ghouls N' Ghosts is really pretty, but it's nowhere near as hard as the arcade!", my reaction would be "Gimme, gimme, gimme!" I have mad respect for those who have memorized every sprite of this game and are good at it, but I don't have the personality or the endurance for that crazy feat. A moderately (rather than brutally) hard iteration sounds lovely to me.
@RetroComparisonsАй бұрын
@@baronhausenpheffer Lmao! That's exactly how I feel. I never used to play games on easy mode where available but these days, especially for getting footage for this channel, easy mode is the way to go. When there's an unintentional easy mode like with this port I say thank you to the developers. Whenever I see people beat games like this in general or especially the no death runs I'm in complete awe.

There's some fantastic ports on the SMS. One that always comes to mind is Road Rash. Even though the MD port is better it's insane how good it looks and plays for an 8 bit version.

I used to have the SMS G&G and it was fun. Yes the SMS sound is not the best but overall the game is decent for a 8-bit system. It plays so much different since you have to buy items in shop. Until you get the faster shoes the game seems slow. Of course the Genesis version is the one to pick for home consoles. Great video.
@RetroComparisonsАй бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! I love seeing 8 bit ports of arcade games where they still maintain the integrity of the original game. While the Genesis port is better in most ways this is still very impressive.
@AwesomanАй бұрын
The Master System was capable of pulling off some pretty nice graphics when it wanted to (although clearly not with this game) but man, that sound card was just excruciating.
@RetroComparisonsАй бұрын
Lol! The gameplay was pretty good despite the slowdowns (which actually make this a little easier) but yeah that audio is pretty awful.

I love the SMS but id recommend any collecter to stick with the original game library. Wonderboy series, Shinobi, Alien Syndrome, Zillion, Phantasy star, ect. The SMS doesnt handle Genesis ported games too well.
@RetroComparisonsАй бұрын
Oh yeah, games built from the ground up for the console were almost always better than trying to port a arcade game like this. Still though, at the time I think it was a good effort.

This Port Is Intresting..... The Graphics Were Impresive Presentación Is Really Good Music, And Sound Can Be Better Tho But The Gameplay Is Intrestingly Good, And I Think Its Not That Bad! Its Honestly Impresive For A SMS Game

It's a really solid port for the SMS. Unless you had both the SMS & Genesis back then this would have sufficed for getting your Ghouls 'N Ghosts fix.

After hours of playing I think I've gotten to the end of level 2 at best on all of the games I've tried in this series. I really like them but holy crap they're hard. I've watched the walk throughs too and it's mind boggling how anyone can not only beat these games, but make it seem like it's a cakewalk.

@@RetroComparisons many of those game plays are tool assisted simulations (TAS) where the computer controlling the character doesn't even die if he's killed by an enemy.
@juststatedtheobvious9633Ай бұрын
@@RetroComparisons The secret to beating this game on Master System is to die over and over again in the second half of the first level. There's a decent number of chests if you know how to summon them, and the upgrade shop is on a regular cycle between all the wizard attacks and health/magic restore. Upgrade your helmet until you get the spell that makes you temporarily immune to damage. As long as you have armor, you can use it. Also, armor upgrades add hit points and boot upgrades give you better controls.
