Arcade1up Centipede Review (with monitor replacement)

Have the Tempest and I’m still looking to add this to my A1U collection. Know you got rid of mostly all of these cabs but really enjoy these videos.

They did a great job with the Centipede cabinet, other than the monitor quality and rotation. If they'd done a BOE vertical, it'd have been perfect. Now that I've gotten rid of the cabinets, I go back and watch the videos as well. Glad I recorded them. =)

The cabinet is beautiful. The monitor kills it for me. Not only does it need replacing but it’s also way to vertical . Wish Arcade1up would lean their monitors back more.

I’m too lazy to replace a screen. It’s a shame the one it comes with is so bad. I really wanted this cab

That's correct. I have a video uploading now comparing Centipede and Tempest, and in that one you can see the difference.

After watching this I am having a hard time deciding if I should get the Tempest or this Centipede...I like the Tempest for the BOE display monitor, but the Centipede cabinet is so pretty but that means I will have to do the monitor swap mod you did if I want to match or get close to the Tempest monitor. I know this is an old post but I'm wondering if you end selling the Tempest or your kept it. Thanks for sharing, I have liked and subscribed.

If you are willing to do the monitor swap, I'd say the Centipede cabinet is the nicer option. It's a taller, more solid cabinet, with a great marquee and better controls. I actually ended up selling both, along with most of my 3/4 scale machines. Not that I didn't like them, but I needed to free up space for other projects and have a MAME pedestal that plays all of the games very well.

Great video, I have just purchased a Dell E1715s monitor and will be upgrading my Arcade1Up Centipede Legacy cabinet in the next few weeks. Do you have any issues with your trackball, mine is very unresponsive and makes games like Missile Command almost impossible to play. Do you know if there is an aftermarket trackball replacement for the Centipede Legacy cabinet?

I didn't have any issue with the trackball in my Centipede cabinet. It was really solid actually, so maybe just luck. I think GRS (Glenns Retro Show) may have an aftermarket replacement.

Thanks, I did check out Glenn's Retro Show, but unfortunately after purchasing a GRS Trackball I found out that it is not compatible with the Centipede Legacy cabinet, so I'm hunting for an alternative.

Ever figure out the black dots on the screen? My cab with the original monitor had them too. Sometimes they'd show, sometimes not. Aggravated me so much I had to return it.

I know this is an old post, but I ended up buying another one of these cabs because it's so beautiful and this monitor has those same weird dots in the middle of the screen. It's definitely something with the stock monitor. Time to swap it!

@@Bane_of_the_Moonsea But the one he shows off here isn't the stock one, it is the new DELL E1715S model. Still it seems to have caused the strange dots. I have them dots on my stock 30th MK cabinet monitor, too. I ordered the DELL E1715S monitor to replace it, though. My stock monitor also has three stuck pixels and even more strange black dots on the top, so that's why I replace it.

I really don’t like the placement of the spinner. The trackball seems decent enough but after playing on my ALU it just seems tiny.

missile command in the arcade is the same, you have to brush the ball harder side to side for speed, the way you were playing it is very slow. you only need to be close for a hit not exact.

Thanks for the review. Man this cab looks GREAT and that new monitor makes a huge difference. Will the power switch work with a smart plug or is it one of the switches that doesnt stay in the "on" position?

Unfortunately, this is one of the momentary toggle style that don't work with a smart plug.

Congrats on the new monitor. It really looks a thousand times better than that garbage TN one. Hope the dark spots you found were just debris between the screen and plex. I'm not exactly a tall person, but definitely helps when you have the cab on a fridge cart. It's about 4" higher. Thanks for sharing.

I only see them when I'm standing straight, so I think they'll be less visible once I have the cabinet on my 4" risers. I have another monitor on the way to test as well.
