Arcade1Up NFL Blitz - Sanitized for Your Protection?

Arcade1Up announced their NFL Blitz model today. While this came as a pleasant surprise to many, it didn't escape the court of public opinion unscathed. Being a big Midway fan I'll discuss some of my own opinions on this announcement and whether or not Arcade1Up is to blame.

Very interesting topic, man! Not something I’d purchase. I’d rather play it on Dreamcast or a real Blitz cab. Midway games all had that over the top goofy charm in them. The censorship might be removing some of that charm from Blitz.

I can understand why some modern re-releases of retro games get altered due to licensing for like music or in game product placement etc (crazy taxi for example) but I’m sick of so many old games getting chopped up to fit in with the modern state of play, especially when you can still play the original unaltered game via so many other methods. Accept that history is what it is and when released it wasn’t a problem, these games are products of their time and should be preserved. Release them intact or not at all! Changing the tackle animations on this is crazy, it is what it is. It’s like censoring old movies, they are what they are if you don’t like it don’t watch them. Ha ha as I was typing crazy taxi you mentioned it in your video:)

Definitely disappointing, but not surprise. When nfl blitz was remastered on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 the late hits were removed. So to me I knew this was not going to be on the arcade1up cabinet. Still going to play nfl blitz on my original PlayStation 1 and skip on the arcade1up cabinet

I feel the same way whenever I see Guile's altered SF2 stage in every modern Street Fighter compilation release. Instantly makes it less fun. I want to play the game that I remember, not some committee-approved rom hack. That's why my arcade PCBs aren't going anywhere!

Although I’ve slowed down on buying pcbs I do agree, I have no desire to get rid of any of them. Hopefully we will continue to see MAME and MiSTer grow throughout the next decade. It seems that when commercially made products fail the hobbyists are always there to save the day. Kind of like the Star Wars despecialized editions.

@@grgmj1980 It's one of the more noticeable changes. The star logo in the center of Guile's stage was changed to a star with comet fire or some crap. Look for it in Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, Capcom Arcade Stadium, and probably Capcom Fighting Collection. They also changed Chun-Li's soda cans to blue, and most recently got rid of E. Honda's rising sun flag.

Here's another thing the NFL didn't consider, piracy. People who want the uncensored version may just buy another four-player cabinet to support Arcade1Up, hack it into a multicade, then put a pirated version of NFL Blitz on that. It may not have the 49-way sticks, but it will still be the experience they remember from back in the day. I'm not condoning this, but I'm saying that some people may go this route to get the experience they want.

Back in the 90s, censorship was there for decency, but at least they enable players to crank up the blood level in the option settings like in most Midway or SNK games. Nowadays, censorship is a part of Twitter/Tumblr's world domination plan, where you'd have to mod games like NFL Blitz in the way its originally made to be. Also, there are no Arcade1UP copies of Power Instinct (豪血寺一族), because that game is on its way to getting cancelled, mainly because of the "offensive" fighter White Buffalo.

Man I was actually thinking this would be an awesome cab to own if they ever released it….but they blew it….again. How do they keep making these boneheaded decisions at A1up🤦🏻‍♂️ ITS A GAME!!!! I agree but with only one exception. Censorship in the 90s had board implications for the entire industry. These were done just so they could lock down the license. I think that’s why they’re calling it “Blitz Legends”. It is a different version of the game. The big question is will it be worth $600?

How about doing a mod on the cab with a real pcb? I'm sure some way it could be done. The deck can probably be modded to allow it to work with other hardware. If you are willing to live without online play, maybe that would be a good tradeoff.

I find it interesting that we can have games like Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto, but censor a simple football game. NFL is a bunch of pansy a55es. A1up had to have put in so much effort, and then gets all the way to the 10 yard line...then fumbles! They folded like a cheap suit regarding removing the late hits and certain tackles. Easy pass for me. Once again, A1up dropped the ball. Not gonna buy this cabinet. Perhaps they'll rethink this with a Pro Version and have the late hits etc as option in the menu, but I doubt it. I think I'm done supporting A1up and am going to sell all my cabinets and just get one nice Mame cabinet with 2000 games in it.

Very good video. Your points are valid and your “rant” is very justified. I’m not a blitz player, but you couldn’t avoid hearing the game in the arcade back in the day. Midway had a way of creating a game that screamed imagination and to even censor a bit of that is tough. The crazy taxi comparison is very good. The game came out on ps2 and the soundtrack is changed. I couldn’t even play the game due to that change. Here’s hoping for the best

They are afraid of a bad image or offending somebody. They do not want to be associated with a violent game where you actually harm a digitized player. And whatever bad language the originals had, they are afraid kids might play this and hear it so they ordered them removed. NFL is like Nintendo in the early 90's, Final Fight and MK for Super Nintendo were heavily censored because of NOA's strict content polices. The fatalities in MK were watered down. Oh My God was changed to Oh My Car in Final Fight among other things. Movies on non pay TV channels sometimes have swear words muted or changed.

Seeing is believing... I'm still skeptical. IIRC, NFL Blitz was UNPLAYABLE in MAME unless you had a Beefy PC. And it STILL had frame rate issues. But, it is after all a remake, so we'll see if they reprogrammed it from the ground up to solve those issues to run on a single board computer. P.S. The late hits is what made this game fun. I remember laughing my ass off when I played with friends. Taking them out will kill it. Period. In summary, I'm glad this is on an Arcade 1Up... I will never buy it anyway. Lol. Here's to hoping this port doesn't make it to any of our modern consoles; like the Switch.

The footage in this video is from 2K Gold in MAME, it's not bad at all really. Same with the SportStation tandem. It seems to run pretty good. I think there were people already discussing getting this and then modding it with a Pi, but man even the Pi4 cant handle Blitz and Showtime. If you're buying this to mod you're going to need a decent PC like you mentioned. It'll be interesting to see how the sticks work as well.

What they should have done is gotten rid of the NFL Liscense. I would rather play the uncensored version of this game without the real NFL Liscense than to play with NFL Liscense but play with a watered down version of the game.

I could be ok with some things missing, players missing or so , but I can’t be ok with late hits missing , certain tackles missing, and now hearing certain audio clips and sound bytes . Here’s a question, if they use 49 optical and you break one of them , how are you replacing these ? Are they selling replacements? Do you have to change all to 8 way , do they allow you to access dips to change to 8 way ? I was going to say this in my video but I didn’t want to help 1up more than I already have in years past.

I’d have to think they’ll sell replacements, at least I hope so. My guess is they’ll be USB and hopefully nothing too wild that a normal person wouldn’t be able to swap out. To make it worth their while, maybe they’ll make Showtime and Gauntlet cabs too! You should start the speculation on that.

Well now that I have a candy cab, I’m going to put a Pi 4 and try to get this game on it. I think this cab will make non gamers happy. I can see this selling a lot for many.

Be careful, the Pi4 doesn’t run this or Showtime very well. It’s just not quite powerful enough. As of today you’d need a PC to pull off running these. On the bright side, Pi4 has been exceptional with Naomi games from what I’ve seen. Congrats again on that candy cab!

@@ScarletSprites it actually runs Nfl Blitz 2001 dreamcast version great on my pi4 in my a1up cab, using the redream emulator.

@@Lasmusic559 That’s not terribly surprising since Naomi works so well on a 4. I’ve not tried any of the DC stuff though. For the above I was speaking specifically about the arcade versions via Mame.

Agree, I’m almost certain it will be done. The question will be how though. I suppose you could run the console versions off of a Pi easily, but you’d need a PC at this point for the arcade versions and mame. It’ll also be interesting to see how the 49 way sticks are hooked up and how they’re used in an aftermarket setup.

This is why it's important to own the original cabinets or the original games. Companies are doing this when they re-release their products. Movie companies are doing this with their movies too when they re-release them on streaming. Editing out jokes, and entire scenes from old movies.

There's a way mod to add the original music back to the steam version but I get your point. Blitz was never meant to be a football sim. Removing tackles and stuff is ridiculous

I'm not 100% familiar with the game, but do late hits affect player stats? As much as it sucks that they watered it down I can at least appreciate 1up for disclosing it before selling it instead of just letting people find out after plunking down $600 for it.

I don’t think it affects stats, at least not in any meaningful ways. I don’t think it even keeps track of tackles. I can’t even imagine the outrage of allowing people to spend $600 and not disclosing that they altered the code. Riots.

Boy that’s a tangent I really had to keep myself from getting started on in this video; the pacification of sports. I’m all for protecting against head injuries. Hockey and football have really gone almost too far in trying to correct perceived past mistakes. I really barely even recognize hockey any more. It’s certainly not the sport I grew up with.

Capcom censored SF2 in the recent Street Fighter collection, they removed the rising sun from Honda’s stage and changed Fei Long’s flag from Hong Kong to China, although strangely Zangief is still from the USSR (?)

It totally changes the experience. I remember when these games first came out. They were never meant to be a realistic representation of the sport, and were in fact advertised as being "extreme" and even a comical overly dramatised arcade football experience. Blitz is not a simulation as much as it is a novelty that managed to attain the NFL licensing (which was obviously a marketing strategy). It's a shame that the NFL (as an organization) has become so soft over the years.

A similar thing happened with Frogger when they didn’t put the original music in it. Although the game played the same, it totally ruined the game for me & I didn’t buy it.

The original arcade game used copyrighted music without permission and Arcade1up couldn't get the rights to use music that was never licensed in the first place.

I've never understood Arcade1Up. Every generation tries to buy their childhood toys when they get middle aged. Right now people want Arcade cabs because they were part of their youth. Arcade1Up sells a Simulacra of that product that will never satisfy a person. Most of these machines get used as much as a treadmill bought for Christmas. Modifying the games is just the icing on the cake. Arcade1Up isn't about preservation, it's unadulterated consumerism. Which doesn't make them evil, but I don't consider their products part of the hobby. Their products are there to remove money from the wallets of GenX people who want an interesting mancave, _and_ _nothing_ _more_. I think this is "Case Closed" on "The Arcade1Up Question". It's fake arcade games for plebs. Pure and Simple.

@@ScarletSprites I'm usually in the "let people enjoy things" camp, but at the same time this is my offramp from ignoring the elephant in the room. Most people turn these machines into decorations. None of my business, but I think arcade cabinets sold at Walmart should be viewed critically like any other classic game knockoff sold there. Now that we have mister, I figured a few horizontal and vertical classic cabs would become the defacto mistercade meme and that arcade1up would fade away. Their market really isn't people like us though.

I really liked your Crazy Taxi comparison. I keep seeing the MK comparisons and i just wasn't agreeing with it because A) blood and fatalities are just way more integrated into that series, B) despite the censorship the snes MK1 was still an overall solid experience but just with lesser finishers, and C) people skip fatalities all the time because after the initial novelty they get old. But even just thinking of Crazy Taxi, I automatically hear "All I Want" and picture KFC and Fila, lol. I guess for Blitz, I just think more about the frenetic gameplay but the late hits and tackle variety felt like icing on the cake. The announcer is iconic though. So I guess it's one of those things that will vary for everyone based on what originally connected them to the game. I have other versions including on my MAME cab, but I kind of want this just for the 49 way sticks lol. Arcade1up does not often go outside of the JLF clones with either a bat or balltop, regardless of genre. So that impressed me.

if given the choice, I would obviously prefer that the post-play tackles still be in the game, but the core gameplay of Blitz/‘99/‘00 being as strong as it is has always been the appeal of those games to me, more so than any of the superfluous stuff. as long as it ~plays~ like the original Blitz, I can overlook things that are outside the control of developers and manufactures.

Perhaps a compromise is to censor OOB, but have a 'cheat mode' that fans will find on the net in 30 seconds. The vendor complies with wishes, fans get what they want and maybe a bit of buzz is generated

Oh yeah, I still have Big Blue. That one isn't going anywhere. It might be hard to discuss and do a comparison w/o the actual A1Up cabinet. I do know that Naomi runs pretty well off of a Pi4 these days so I have hope that they could bring a decent experience via the right SBC.

I think the first principle being violated is posterity. As a way of preserving an experience this kind of thing will never be recieved positively. It's almost irrelevant whether it affects gameplay or not, although I would say it definitely encroaches on fun factor.
