Giant Gonzalez was originally supposed to be the yeti and was going to be the third giant in the ring at world war 3. However, he had some sort of trouble with a visa or work permit at the time of the debut. WCW still held out he might be available at the PPV which is why in the reveal they substituted him with Reese (giant ninja) wrapped in bandages, hence the yeti looking like a mummy, hoping they could unbandagel the Yeti as Gonzalez as if it had been him all along.

They were all terrible. Man Mountain Rock had a great gimmick in WCW as Maxx Payne. MMR was just a watered down cheesy version of that gimmick. Duke Droese had an awesome finisher though. I still say The Gobboldygooker holds the highest rank in terms of ridiculousness and mind-numbing stupidity. At least with these other gimmicks, they attempted to wrestle. What the hell was the purpose of The Gobboldygooker's existence? All that "thing" did was dance appallingly. They spent a long time hyping up the mystery egg and what pops out is a man in a bird suit. Yeesh. I remember being a kid going to watch Lucha Libre in Cd. Juarez Mexico. They had Freddy Krueger as a main event heel. During the same time they had Frankenstein and Dracula and Werewolf man as a trio opening the show against Batman Robin and I think mighty mouse. Even as I kid I didn't like those gimmicks. On the plus side I got to see Eddie Guererro (18yrs old), Mil Mascaras, Blue Demon, El Santo, Villano III, etc. Good times.

Stupid gimmicks in WCW are not limited the Jim Herd days and later. I seem to remember a Crockett era tag team called The New Breed. They were supposed to be a couple of bounty hunters from the future, sent back in time to take out another wrestler with a stupid gimmick, Lazer Tron. Yes, it's not a typo, fucking Lazer Tron. He was a futuristic masked guy, with antennas on his head & a fucking laser tag receiver on his chest. He won the NWA Light Heavyweight title & formed a tag team with Boogie Woogie Man. Back to the New Breed, one of them broke his arm & had a forearm cast with a small circuit board and some wires stuck to it because he went back to the future and they gave him cybernetic repairs. Also, stupidly enough, they started a fued with the Rock N Roll Express because they hate rock music in the future and love the Beastie Boys. I swear to God I'm not making this stupid shit up!!!!!!

Or, possibly, The Gladiators who came highly heralded “from the west coast”. (I don’t think George South ever got any farther west than the west coast of Texas.) To come all that way.....TO LOSE TO THE MULKEYS! I’d love to have been a fly on the wall when Dusty (or whoever had the book at the time) had to tell George and Gary Royal that they were going to job to the Mulkeys. On the other hand, I can give you 2 reasons why they might have not minded at all. 1) They got to wear masks so almost no one knew who they were. 2) From what I read, Randy and Bill were VERY well respected by the fans, as well as the stars of the show. The Road Warriors (GOAT) liked wrestling them so much that they used to share part of their winnings with the beloved brothers. So, South and Royal might have been happy to do the job.

I remember WWF bringing in these guys who are good workers from the territories, but never made it mainstream and got these stupid gimmicks. Not that I condone this but I bet it gave these guys better pay and more exposure than they ever had. Dirty White Boy becoming the plumber, TL Hopper wasn't much of a stretch, they even had him dressed so the top of his butt-crack was showing. Talk about attention to detail. To quote Dusty, "Doo doo is good for you". I didn't get turning veteran wrestler Tracy Smothers becoming Freddie Joe Floyd. A rookie sensation that every veteran in the baby face locker room have all taken him under their wing. The Goon, Bill Irwin, was a cowboy his entire career, but is now a hockey player. That was an odd choice. Finally, The Pug, Alex Porteau. WTF is a pug? WCW Also did this to Matt Borne by making him Big Josh, a rookie who was a lumberjack and old friend of Tommy Rich.
