This song does so much in its brief runtime it's shocking. 1. Establishes the power dynamic between Piltover and Zaun through the lyrics 2. Establishes how entrenched that power dynamic is by making it a song a child would know 3. Enriches the culture of Zaun by showing that even their folk music can't ignore the power imbalance 4. Instantly communicates Powder and Vi's relationship 5. Provides emotional weight to the death of their mother because this is probably a song she sung to Powder as a lullaby And it's NOT EVEN CORNY

Bingo. It's a child's nursery rhyme which suggests it's a very old song and that this has been going on for a long, long time.

N°3 reminds me of the South Korean Arirang (Sorry if I write it wrong) which is now a very famous song in South Korea and which was created to criticize Japan's colonialism during WW2 and to give Korean people a feeling of hope during those tough times. This song is now part of their culture but the history of the country is well marked in this song. Even their folk music can't ignore their past and the sensitive geopolitical situation the country has faced.

The amount of worldbuilding done in these few seconds. We see that Powder have been told to close her eyes and sing to avoid her being exposed to the horrors. And the song is a begging song, telling us all we need to know of how desperate life on the "wrong" side of the river is.

When I started this show knowing nothing about it, I was like, oh, haha, creepy little girl singing over the sounds of horrific violence, TOTALLY not overdone or anything 🙄. But for some reason, I still could not look away from the screen for a single second. And you know what? This song and this scene does SO MUCH to immerse us in the world of the series. Establishes the themes of police brutality, class inequality, and innocence lost. Establishes who Vi, Powder, and Vander are and WHY they are the way they are, having lost so much but terrified to lose what they have left. And arguably most importantly; establishes the relationship between the two girls, Vi having obviously told Powder to cover her eyes and sing to try to shield her from the horror, trying so hard not to break down in front of her little sister, Powder trusting Vi completely to guide them both across the bridge. All in one, what, two-minute scene?
@cat0622 жыл бұрын
Yeah I find it's not a creepy little singing but a comfort of a lullaby though a distressful scenario. It also a song "dear friend across the river." Piltover that is across from Zaun. A little help is ask in return for comfort as a form of thank you. A very big contrast to what happened on the bridge. After so many unanswered plea and many heavily armed enforcers that came instead, something let go.

I find that Arcane takes things that have become cliché, but recontexualizes them to make them feel fresh and original. Another example of this is when Sevika, who is close to delivering the killing blow to Vi, tells her, "I'll give [Jinx] your regards." We've heard these words a million times, but coming from the mouth of Sevika, we genuinely believe them. We've seen how honest Sevika is: she openly confronts Vander in front of everyone and tells him he looks weak (shortly before defecting to Silco's side). In the factory, she, without hesitation, sacrifices herself to save Silco because she honestly believes he's the best hope for the Undercity. And she tells Jinx the truth that Vi is still alive and running around with "some enforcer girl." Upon being accused of lying, she twists the knife further by bringing up *_the truth_* that not only was Jinx responsible for the death of her family members, but that her mental instability is a threat to "the cause." She does this because she believes that honesty is the best way to achieve independence for the Undercity. One could imagine that, if Sevika succeeded in killing Vi, that she would not only tell Jinx, but show her proof, which (Sevika hopes) would drive Jinx into irreversible psychosis and lead Silco to remove her from the equation.

This first scene blew my mind. It shows how dark and sad any world could be, including Runeterra, and how this show was NOT for the youngest. That's why I'm a fan of this show while I don't like animes so much, it's always too fantastic, too action-focused. Here we just hear a little girl singing to comfort herself and her sister while everything around is burning and every man is killing eachother, singing to reassure in a scene of horror during a violent revolution that turned into a bloodbath. This series is DARK, it's SAD, it tells about horror, misrespect, unequality, violence, anger, mistakes, perseverance, madness, sadness, revolution, conflict, the bad side of a human-being and all that can erupt from it. It's a serious series, not a cartoon one, and I loved the fact that it stays lovely with funny scenes and lines while being so dark, sad and emotionnal. This show is a real masterpiece.
