Angela has the best live death harsh vocals from any female and in general just some of the best live vocals in death metal history. This whole show is fuckin incredible too, honestly nemesis is probably pretty low on my list out of all the songs they played this show. Anyway nice reaction, Angela rules and this was peak arch enemy

Angela is one of the pioneers of harsh female vocalists, and she was amazing; her presence on stage and power supreme. She stepped back from the band some years ago and, to my understanding, was directly involved in selecting Alissa to replace her on stage and now manages the band. If you listen to any of the modern female harsh vocals then you need to understand the origin and Angela is one of the most important influences in that.

Actually, Arch Enemy has had 3 lead singers... the original vocalist was a guy - Johan Liiva, who recorded 3 albums w/ AE... After the 3rd record failed to sell, Michael Amott (guitar) felt that he wasn't the right voice for the band and sacked him amicably (They did work together again in another project - Black Earth) ... Angela Gossow was the 2nd vocalist, and she was Michael Amott's longtime girlfriend - she took over in 2001 and Arch Enemy became a global force by 2006. In 2013, Angela decided that she wanted to quit the band (she was tired of the touring), but stayed as Arch Enemy's manager. She actually suggested that Alissa White-Gluz (the current AE vocalist) take her spot and the band is still going strong and popular as ever.

Angela gets too little love. The live concert from London is great too! I was initially quite shocked when I heard them first in 2013, but I soon recognized how good it was, just different. The only other times music has shocked me was listening to Poem of Ecstasy by Scriabin more than half a century ago (yes, I am an Old), and Immortal, when I listened to At the Heart of Winter for the first time. That was late nineties.

Clean vocals are much harder to pull off live. You can easily hear mistakes and it rarely sounds like the original. With live heavy vocals you get a big impact and it sounds closer to the original, or sometimes even better. Another bonus is that the energy in heavy vocals really translates into a more excited and lively crowd, which is good for everyone: band, venue, organizer, promoter, fans.

This singer stepped down from being a singer and chose her successor herself while she is part of the band still in the background with bookings etc and doing the same role for another band Amaranthe and made a song with it Do ore Die but no appearances for over 10 years

For the next song with Alissa, my vote is 'Deceiver Deceiver'. Of the more recent releases, that's the closest with a vibe like Nemesis, so it would make for a good comparison. Please don't choose The Eagle Flies alone like so many reactors, I honestly feel like it's a song that takes time to like, a point with which I imagine others will disagree. There's plenty to choose from anyway; Handshake with Hell, The World is Yours, Avalanche, The Watcher, Eye Of the Storm, Poisoned Arrow, House Of Mirrors, War Eternal, etc. If you want more of Angela.... Under Black Flags We March, Burning Angel, My Apocalypse, We Will Rise, I Am Legend (Out For Blood)...

Angela is one of the pioneers of female fronted death metal bands, basically the first one to actually blow up and that happened like 20yrs ago, she’s been retired for years now and she manages the band now instead. Anyway she’s one of the most important figures of all time when it comes to female vocalists in genres like death metal. You should check out more from this show, this isn’t even one of their best songs and this whole performance is amazing, highly recommend checking out “dead bury their dead” from the same show. Anyway angela ruled and was extremely influential, her live harsh vocals are some of the best ever in death metal. Arch enemy in general was a very important band for the Melodic death metal genre back in the day

Take your time with grows. Think of distorted vocals (growls, fry, scream, throat singing… ) as a different language: the first time you hear them may be hard to "get the message". But if you stick to them, you will eventually begin to feel the deep emotions they can convey. *Arch Enemy* is pretty direct and brutal with distorted vocals. If you want to try a different, more mixed used of distorted and clean, apart from Jinjer, you may try other bands like *Ignea* (Ukrainian band, with symphonic intrusions. Their brand new album is fire!), *Null Positiv* (German metal band with industrial vibes) or *Draconian* (Doom metal). Moldovan band *Infected Rain* may be a good choice too: more screamo than growl (at least in their more recent albums), but frontwoman Lena Scissorhands is top level singer, and among the more versatile around today. …ok, already quite a lot of suggestions! 😬

Alissa is a lot more consistent with her performances both on records and live, however there is something sinister about Angela's live vocals. The scream she pulls off at the start of the scream is absolutely nauseating and brilliant at the same time
