Makes me feel like they're my loyal warriors who grow with me, rather than dumpstering them when a better unit shows up. Hope they bring it over into warhammer, having a pack of cultists fight with you from turn 1 and turning into chosen units would be badass as fuck

The M+B style upgrading almost seems like a match made in heaven for heresy-focused stuff in Warhams. the forces of chaos tends to evolve on their deeds and actions, and could easily be something that works alongside marks of chaos and other effects.

Well the beastmen hierachy is mostly decided at birth. You don't get born an ungor and then pump iron until you're a minotaur. You're born weak or strong and that's pretty much it. It makes way more sense for chaos.

Why? I don't know of stories where the Amazons and Aphrodite are opposed, and Aphrodite is both a goddess that sides with the Trojans (the same side the Amazons are on) and Ares' lover.

Great video, very well written! If I may add to the history part, the city of Themiscyra did really exist in the Black Sea (we definitely know that because the romans captured it from Pontus during the Mithridatic Wars), and considering that the Trojan War takes place during the fucked up Late Bronze Age, it's pretty possible that they really did join the war after losing their city (which happened to almost every major town outside egypt)

9:26 I have wanted something like that since Rome 2. I always thought the "army traditions" in Rome 2 were nice, but it would be even cooler to have individual veteran units. TWW2 recently did something like that with the Greenskins update scrap-upgrades. All these systems are not quite fleshed out imo, but with a little bit of extra work a veteran system could be really cool. Maybe also make it based on in-battle/campaign achievements, not only unlocks (to prevent all units turning out the same) and you have a great system. (I think Shogun 2 had a veteran system in mp, where units could unlock abilities)

You should have also mentioned that both Hippolyta and Penthesilea are the daughters of Ares, the god of war. They also had two sisters Antiope and Melanippe. Both also daughters of Ares who appear in the myths. I wonder if they will too will be included in this DLC as regular generals for either Amazon faction.

From what I've seen, while there is some definite improvements to the horde style gameplay it doesn't touch on one factor that makes hordes hard to play. The fact that all settlements you raze can immediately be recolonized by other factions with little penalty. I would have really liked to see some sort of permanent settlement destruction system to fit in the "burn the world to ground" theme so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor and look back on the ruins of former settlements and cities rather than seeing them owned other factions. Just my two cents.

Hmm. I agree on the Buildings being redundant in their current form, with XP also gating better units. Perhaps it should've been each tree is gated behind it's first stage building, I.E You can only build the units that upgrade into the units that are locked by this building tree once you have the level 1, but upgrading gives bonuses to those units, as well as increasing xp Gain for them, to give rewards for having those buildings?

I like the look of how Penthesilea's horde works, but I generally prefer settled factions and Hippolyta's faction specific units look more my speed. It's a shame since Penthesilea as a melee hero is more interesting to me that I'll probably just play Hippolyta for the settled + better units aspect.

hmm i found hyppolyta archer specialisation to be pretty meh, archers are terrible in this game and her 'special" archers are barely worth it against simple slingers with shield. axe-wielders from Penny are great units tho, sadly she doesn't have heavy chariots, but her heavy cav is very good.

Though ultimately having played both the campaigns, their rosters are hugely lacking. It's like if we got the Tomb Kings but only Settra could recruit Tomb Guard and only Khatep could get Ushabti.

Very good video. I wish the bloods worn units lasted until at least 5 - 7 turns. Even if you had to invest in research for that to happen. I'm fighting against Sparta and Odysseus now and there are quite a few times where I need extra help. Not being able to reinforce your own armies is a real pain.

They're at least referred to. One thing to note, though, is that The Iliad and The Odyssey weren't the only stories Homer made, and not even the only ones about the Trojan War. There's evidence that he composed many epics about the Trojan War, but those two are the only ones that have survived to this day. So just because the Amazons may not have had much limelight in the Odyssey doesn't mean Homer didn't talk about them in detail in other stories, we just don't know about it.

The Iliad covers only two weeks of the Trojan War. Other stories cover the arrival of the Amazons after the Iliad but before the Odyssey.

They show up in the Aethiopis, which is the part of the Trojan Cycle that comes immediately after the Iliad and features Achilles fighting against Penthesilea, Memnon the Ethiopian and his eventual death to Paris' arrow being guided by Apollo.

So how are you liking this game, Cody? I haven't much played it yet and got the Amazon DLC for free yesterday and the game actually because "hey why the hell not a free game". I'm finally going to boot it up here tonight in a few minutes actually like 9 minutes and 48 seconds to be precise (after your video lol) and really actually give er a good go because I need to take a RDR2 online break, my cowboy boots I wear while playing have been hidden by my fiance - sad face. Question though I see the units in this game and it looks like the Bronze Age swords are a solid piece like they were cast or something, is that true? Or does it just look like this because it's just a game and they actually smithed their swords out of a solid ingot of bronze or iron?

Bronze age weapons and tools were typically poured into a mold and cast as a single piece. A similar texhnique is used in art called The Lost Wax method. Additional divots and decorations were done by hammering on the bronze.

The Greek myths have many versions, and CA went with their own interpretation that allowed more than one Amazon hero for the DLC. Hippolyta belongs to the previous generation of heroes and she shows up in stories with Hercules and Theseus, which is why in this one she appears as old. I don't recall Penthesilea having a specific hate for Achilles in the stories or Achilles being related to Hercules either.

She either died to herakles, was killed by the Amazon's by accident when they came to attack herakles. Or went back to attend with Jason and married him, then when he put her asside to marry someone else she and the Amazon's went to attack the wedding, where she was either killed by Jason, or killed by the Greeks or killed by the Amazons bin the crossfire. Either way she's supposed to be dead by the Trojan war

Volound is right... Total War is now just another garbage recycled yearly release tripe game... I think he's right when he says that the last really great installment was Shogun 2; MAYBE Attila, but it's mostly all just gone straight downhill from Rome 2... When you say that you should be prepared to be "constantly clicking to reposition units.", that's exactly part of the problem with the Total War games now; they're a typical rapid-pace clickfest RTS. That was never the original vision though... It was about the grander slow evolution of a battle from the Order of Battle and infantry maneuvers planned in advance after carefully analyzing the battlefield... I really think that we'll never see another great historical installment based around the idea that seeks to mimic the idea that these battles should take a LONG time to execute. Examples in history show that these kinds of engagements occurred over the course of HOURS to SEVERAL DAYS... Yet most of the battles in the Total Wars games, especially since Warhammer, wrap up in about 15 minutes... where's the fun of grand, metered, planned in advance and masterfully executed strategy in that?

I’m sorry to disappoint, but amazons are not historical accurate. Yes, graves of female warriors have been found, but they were probably part of the Scythi, a nomadic people (and not a kingdom) in which men and women both fought (so no nation composed by only female warriors with men staying at home). I like TW Troy, but the last historical title was Thrones of Britannia.

Thumbs down. I think it gives fair and correct assessment of a harmful practice of releasing games to meet deadlines. Next game should not release until mid 2022 so they can actually put proper time into developing better polished products for release. However, review leaves out how it plays into the overall game. Which, Troy accomplishes excellently in its really unique design. Ths is in regards to limiting army, in favor of strategic play with ai faction allies to take map control. As well as some of the expectations for when multiplayer releases. Including, with Salami and Argos factions coming next, which I'm probably more excited about than Amazons. There's also fairly limited explanation on how well they pull off horde faction in this game. As compared to previous games. Which many are already giving this praises for. Even with improvements that, naturally, can still be made. And, of course there's the major factor of a review for a game only a few hours after official copy released. Which means it's based on beta play. So it would be interesting to see more insight into the game. The game and design for Troy is phenomenal. The only thing I'd say that holds it back from among top games of the year is exactly that practice of how Total War is scheduling game releases. For the purpose of cashing in. However, it only ends up hurting them in the long run. Due to more profitability that comes with creating quality products with a good reputation for quality products. If they actually had an internal quality standard, it would be of much more benefit for them. And, of course, for consumers. That said, the development is still ongoing for Troy until multiplayer. However, so far, it's still quite good quality. And we can probably expect much better quality within the next few months. Next, there is currently nothing online discussing what is being talked about everywhere regarding this game. And it is the faction-based play in the campaign. This game will outright punish you for trying to play the same brute-force way of amassing army with not really much thought or strategy. Since you simply can't get away with that in Troy without ending up in a messy fustercluck campaign. As in trying to play without regard to the overall picture - which is that this is a two sided war. The game is just as much about winning the war against opposition as it is uniting allies on your side of the war. Every turn from turn-1 involves using diplomacies to build good relations with factions on your side. And attitudes change, so relationships need to be maintained. Therefore, it's not just about amassing a big army. It's about how you are working together with your faction allies to take map control. Actually, putting military alliances and war coordination to really good use. There is tons of strategic play in this regard for this game. This includes, trade section to trade/join war, trade land regions, etc. Actually requiring lots of thought and consideration to make decisions each turn. Like making moves in chess. Which many seem to be missing out due to continuing to try to play the same way as previous TW games. Hint for Danan side - if you're not playing Odysseus, it's a good idea to try to confederate him. Then, comes the improvements and refinements to the combat system. All factions share a sort of base set of units. But this game has really interesting specializations that give factions unique play styles. This is part of why supply lines are so effective. For example, one faction might be based on lesser numbers of higher tier units. So will have a difficult time affording to field additional armies. Whereas a faction like Aneas, opts for quantity over quality. So he gets a special bonus that allows him to better afford additional armies. Provided he's using light units. And his dirt-cheap tier 1 units are actually really nice. So when it comes to the base units, I'm not completely sure on the roles. But here is a list of melee: Axe/shield - first line defense with armor piercing. Spear/shield - more common first line defense similar to axe/shield. Can be altered to place shield on back (reduces missile damage to rear). Club/shield - Good charge defense. Sword/shield - basic flankers. 2H axe - Armor pierce dps. 2H spear - Cycle charge specialist. 2H club - Good for harassment, hitting enemy missile units. This is just my findings. I'm not that great at this game. So it would be interesting to see a good analysis of these unit categories in the game. Naturally, each faction will have their specific compositions of these units according to its particular playstyle. But this design is definitely really interesting to have some baseline of units that apply across the board. Mixed with specialized units offered by each faction. Basically, there's lots about Troy that would actually be good to see more about. Especially from the basis of a decent amount of play after the latest actual patch. So not just some fly by review that mostly disregards much of what this game has to offer. Constructive feedback on things that can be improved, along with much of the good aspects that make this such a great TW.

I realized that afterward as well. It's odd because all the official CA press release stuff and Wikipedia say Hercules. As you fully know, they're both the same guy. But Hercules is he name that is recognized in pop culture, like Zeus over Jupiter.
