I think the intention of the writers to have the character of Castiel deviate from Cassiel is to show his decision to fight for free will, unlike his siblings and unlike the original Cassiel, who watched Earth without interfering. Castiel made his own story when he chose to question orders and fight for humanity. So it was important that he didn't stick to his namesake, it's what makes him unique and real and gives him a life and potential to grow.

I think that if your an arch angel, you have 6 wings, 3 on each side. if you die one, you loose a set, which brings you to only having 4 wings. I think Gabriel is still alive.

I agree. Gabriel was amazing, really awesome character in the show. I believe the show is about trying to do the right thing in the absence of hope, so, then, it was kind of expected that he would die. That was his redemption, from a cynical, sarcastic "This is not my war" kind of guy, to someone taking a step foward and fighting a hopeless fight against his brother, proving that in the end, he cared... His sacrifice was what made that episode awesome and sad.

Oh! I'm not talking about the begining of the tv-series :) Some branches of the faiths identify 7 archangels, but Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel are always mentioned, so they're considered the "oficial ones" (no doubt they're archangels). Lucifer, is also considered an archangel, but one who has fallen from God's grace, so they're 4 :D in the begining of history.

Lucifer didn't really disrupt heaven, he just told God that he couldn't love his creations more than him so God basically said fuck you and cast him from heaven. If anything, God disrupted heaven, not Luci.
