Archer Sew-Along: Day 16 - Buttons and Buttonholes

Join us as we sew our popular Archer Button-Up Shirt!
During this series we'll cover all aspects of making our Archer Button-Up Shirt! This is a great series for anyone just starting out sewing with sewing shirts as well as for people looking to pick up additional shirt-making tips.
It's our final lesson of the Archer Sew-Along, inserting our buttonholes and attaching our buttons! In this video I walk you though how to place your buttonholes, mark your button placement, and how to sew on your buttons by machine or by hand.

Dear Jen , Thank you so much for creating this sew along . Best shirt tutorial EVER ! You truly are a brilliant teacher and you being so calm while showing us all the necessary steps is so comforting ! I have finished my first Archer and will be starting my second Archer next week . I hope to improve certain areas and shorten the sleeves slightly . I was so terrified of the collar as usually this is the part I get confused however with your assistance , I just sailed through this part and I was so happy ! Thank you . I will look at yr patterns to see what other sew alongs are available .

This video tutorial is absolutely great!! Super clear, detailed and a good pace. I have sewn along with the whole Archer series - and now have a fabulous new shirt! Defo worth taking your time with each step. I have been sewing for a couple of years but have always fallen at the collar hurdle. I don't know how I can ever thank you Jen! You do a fabulous job of presenting. There is much to weigh us down right now, all important and worthy of our attention. This sew-a-long helped me by giving me something I had control over. I have sewn several Archers in the past. This one was the most fun and the most rewarding. I took my time and watched each step. One of my favorite things is learning new techniques and you taught me plenty. I am so proud of my newest Archer. It is by far the best. I'm fairly new at sewing and I've never made a proper shirt before. I'm waiting on my Archer shirt pattern to arrive and thought I'd watch the sew along while I wait....I have to say that this sew along is by far the best detailed instructional video I have ever seen. I cannot thank you enough...this will be my first "Grainline" pattern and if all the other tutorials are even half as good as this one then I can't wait to sew more of the Grainline Studio garments. I just gotta say that I hated sewing buttons by hand so much, I avoided button closures. But I have a great button sewing foot now and watching you here reminded me of why I was so happy with my newer machine! I am looking forward to starting an Archer shirt this week-finally found the right fabric for it.

This is the best button and button hole placement video on KZbin! Super clear and demystified the whole process. My one question is if we do wrong sides together to mark the buttons, will the side to side variation be the mirror image of what it should be? Thanks for such a wonderful tutorial!

If you're talking about the cuffs and collarstand yeah, you'll need to mark the side where the button will sit so for the collarstand you would mark the button to the left side of the buttonhole. Hope that makes sense, currently sick so my explanation powers are a bit lacking. If you have q's let me know!

I'm so glad you're ready to take on the Archer! As I always say, it's not really hard, just a lot of compounding steps. The Yates would be so fun, i've been meaning to do a sew-along for adding some tailoring so maybe a 2-parter once we get it drafted for 14-30!

I have to tell you I’ve just used your entire tutorial for making the archer button up. I’ve made a few of them before and love them but I do get a bit stuck at certain points. Following your videos to the letter has made all the difference.I’ve made my best one yet. So accurate. Thank you so much. I’m inspired and empowered to make my husband a shirt now. I think probably the reason you sew through your fingers is because you have cooked your skin with the steam so you have no sensation, LOL. Thanks for doing the sew a longs I learn something from each of the lessons. Did you get the Teflon Pressing Sheet yet?
