should be plenty if you are in the right spot and hunt the wind correctly!

Do you think .223 is enough for a high shoulder shot?
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen 3 жыл бұрын
If you hit lungs, spine, or the artery that runs along the spine, yes. If you hit above the spine you are just going to hit flesh. You should always try to aim for the lower third of the chest cavity and with a gun not higher than mid chest.

@@WeekendWoodsmen so the bullet will definitely go through the shoulder blade?
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen 3 жыл бұрын
It should. However you should never aim for the shoulder blade and the shoulder blade is so high and forward you should rarely hit it.

You need heavier arrows , those deer are small and your penetration is awful .
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen 2 жыл бұрын
not always about the arrow weight...has alot to do with where you hit on the front and back side

@@EChunter first little deer - hit back shoulder. Buck - hit back shoulder. quarter away double lung - hit high also caught spine. buck in the snow - hit back leg. I shoot a big rage and I do feel that the large cut slows the arrow down quite a bit so with a different broad head I might have gotten more penetration on the last two mentioned above. What weight arrow do you suggest? I did get a new bow also that is much faster.

@@WeekendWoodsmen I don't know whatvto suggest everyone set up is different but I do know for sure that I have had several years of dealing with exactly what your showing here and when I finally gave up on being all about speed and went to a mid range arrow weight with coc head I started getting full pass though and more consistent blood trails , I know those rage are tempting with that big cut, I know at times they leave massive blood trails and quick death but when they don't they leave little to nothing.

@@WeekendWoodsmen I appreciate your video. My fast light and weak 500 spined arrows that the archery shop sold me 15 years ago would sometimes snap on impact with targets or game. I went stiffer to a 400 spine and things got better; and I still had an arrow snap when my Slick Trick Magnum hit a whitetail shoulder. The broadhead and 1/3 of the shaft still drove all the way through the deer and he piled up after 30 yards. Results were pretty consistent with cut on contacts. Things went south when I decided mechanicals might be better. For me they proved inconsistent and unreliable. Gradually I went to a 300 spine arrow with a 22 grain insert and a 200 grain single bevel broadhead. The total arrow weight is 537 grains with a 14.7 % FOC. These heavier arrows with cut on contact single bevels zip through deer. Moving heavier to a 650 grain arrow weight would probably insure that a shoulder hit would be a pass through. Now I’ve got 250 spine arrows with 200 grain inserts and 50 grain collars. Using 200 grain single bevels I’ll be at 797 grains with a 22 % FOC. The arrows won’t be speed demons; and that won’t matter. All shots will be within 30 yards. I strongly recommend moving to at least about 535 grains with a cut on contact broadhead. You would likely really appreciate the difference. If you’re not tentative then go all in and build them for 650 grains. You will have to play with spine and insert weight; but that’s right fun anyway. You could check out Ranch Fairy’s channel for more info on heavy arrow tuning. I’ll put in a plug for Ethics Archery because their inserts and collars are awesome. Iron Will, Cutthroat, Tuffhead, and GrizzlyStick would be good sources for broadheads. I’ve always liked Magnus broadheads; but 150 grain is about as heavy as they make. Wasp Broadheads is also making a 200 grain single bevel. I hope you try heavy arrows and cut on contact broadheads!

All good advice if your only goal is to kill the deer. Ive learned to have the patience to only take perfect broad side lung shots right behind the front legs. I just dont like hitting the front legs as there is a lot of meat a bullet will absolutely ruin. I also take great care not to damage the guts as the bacteria within them are really bad for meat quality. A personal choice of mine is to not hunt with a bow. I can get behind the fascination, i just think that nobody can claim to only land perfect shots. It is so hard to hit just right with a bow and i dont want to have any hand in wounding deer or dooming them to a slow and painful death. With a quality well maintained rifle it is very easy to land a very lethal shot every single time.
