Mark Hi, Thought you might be interested in an amazing consequence of using a Cartel 48" 14lb Bow. After open heart surgery my sternum was left very unstable and despite many physio visits the problem was NOT resolved. 8 weeks of shooting an 8m range everyday has completely stabilised my sternum.

Have enjoyed all your videos . Great instruction. i have physical issue. Have achied Sr Bowman in the old US field archery stystem was comfortable at 45 to 50 lb level. Was also fair golfer (300 + yd balls down the fairway). But then had severe arthritis and had left collar bone removed, followed by Humvee accident in Army that squised lower back discs. Now can just barely pull 40 lb and even 35 lb hurts. Golf swing gone too. What to do to keep up with at least casual archery for fun? Built 20 lb self bow, which broke soon. Then ound an adult sich take down set at 20 lbs and the fun is back. Unlikely i will advance to heavy weight, but have 30-30 Officer for hunting, and can at least have 20 yd bow fun in yd. Must be others like me, so this video very appreciated. Karl, retd Ch Warrant Officer

Having started with a 40 pound bow, and shooting it for just over 2 years, I only now tried a 20 pound bow. And I cannot overstate how much fun shooting a 20 pound bow is. It's just too easy. I love it 😂

The thing I love about lower draw weights is that you can shoot for a long period of time without having any fatigue. I also love that You don’t always need finger protection when your not shooting for a long period of time.

Great video. Jeff Kavanaugh has done a few extolling the benefits of form work with light weight bows. So true man. Beautiful youth bow you have there. Looked like loads of fun to shoot. :)

NU, the switch from higher draw weight to lighter with fingers is my finger release to the string. I have to move away from the string with my finger tips to achieve the same consistent release as I would with a higher draw bow. Always enjoy your videos! 👍

Hello there sensei i have recently gotten into compound shooting as it was given to me and i have watched a ton of your videos and i just wanted to thank you for teaching me so much and making me feel better about my chilled approch to archery i just want to relax and get good accurate shots i have come from a air rifle marksmanship so this feels very simular breathing repetition all those things feel the same.

In my 40s, pretty new to archery, and not done a lot of physical anything before, so 20lb feels quite heavy to me still. Can draw and shoot it easily enough, but I tire out quickly. Not joined a club yet, hoping that once I do and can shoot more regularly I'll be able to develop my strength and stamina as well as form.

I would like to try archery, and given that I’m basically kiddie-size myself, a kiddie-sized bow would be just about right. Now, where can I find a decent bow suitable for a left-eyed complete beginner the size of a 13-year-old? (I’m cross-dominant, but more left-eyed than right-handed.)

NUSensei, need some help on when to stop shooting and take a rest, how long is should it be?
@breel79
@breel79 7 жыл бұрын
When grouping becomes consistently worse, take a break. Five or ten minutes of rest. For many archers, this coincides with muscle fatigue. However, If the muscle fatigue is only slight and grouping is still good, keep going to build endurance. If muscle fatigue gets to the point where the muscles are sore, you've over done it. Stop shooting and rest your archery muscles for a day or two.

I am noticing that your drawing hand is not performing a nice and smooth follow-through after the release in this video. You have a noticeable "frozen hand" moment right after the arrow release, followed by a delayed follow-through movement. What's going on there? :)
@NukeClock
@NukeClock 7 жыл бұрын
Because hes thinking about it. When he said "the thought about going through your shot process comes back" hits the nail on the head. Oddly I just picked up my first bow again, last week. I perfomed way way worse the Sensei. Arrows went left like they had their own will.

Every personal shooting style that features a sloppy release is a terrible style.
@sslavi
@sslavi 7 жыл бұрын
My guess - it could as well be a consequence of the too low poundage, compared to what he is used to. If your back muscles are used to draw much higher poundage, then a low poundage might not build enought back tension to create a smooth follow-through. At least for the first dozen or so of arrows - until your brain and body gets used to the new working condition.

Possibly dumb question incoming. Does that matter though? As soon as the string is released, the right hand won't actually affect the shot right? Or is there another reason why archers do this?
@sslavi

Hi Ole, it is actually so important that in this page: kzbin.infovideos you will find 10 (ten!) explanatory videos on the subject of body alignment, back tension and release. I suggest you to check them out, they will probably give you all the answers you need.

use the same side of arm and eye, regardless of handiness. Unless your dominant eye goes blind, it is not possible to switch eye dominance, dexterity is much easier to train for.

Shoot with your best hand and open both eyes. At full draw, focus on the target and aim with left-side blurry pin/aperture.

Archery is actually deep. After the posture and movement developed, it's mostly internal process to shoot well or even shoot consistently.

now is it just me or is it the experience. but i know shooting low pound bows is WIERD!!! but yea looks like you push forward to get that OOMPH you were talking about. settle back and aim!! its the same!!. ppl dont know unless you try it. i do the same thing, unless its instinct and its natural bow follow through. but yea pushing forward omg just feels good when shooting light draw weight after going from what youre used to at a heavier weight omg.. form is important it is still archery., just need t hit the target like u said. this is SKILL this is the difference from recurve to compound lol. DISTANCE is a big thing but yea its the discipline from archery you learn..hit that target!! your target at 20 feet with a 20 pound bow is u at 200 yrds with a 70 lb one. its about the discipline. not the boasting.. still feels weird when u work backwards lol.. nice job being on target

My kind of "light weight" is 60# Yes I shoot 75-85# bow as "normal weight" If you cant effectively draw a bow, and need to lower the draw weight just because it is easier or faster to make you win.. You are not playing in sport, nor archery should not like that, if it is lacking of muscle power, shift to air rifles if you just able to focus with no loading.. You shoot a bow, ability to pull it is no doubt at all, if you dont have the strength, put down your bow to do weight training until you can

Arrogant puppy, some people have physical limits to what they can draw, due to arthritis and other kinds of disabilities, hey you know what keep on drawing those heavy weights and see how long your shoulder lasts.
@MarsPHLO
@MarsPHLO 7 жыл бұрын
inregionecaecorum Let say, in sport science, loading only strength your bone and joints, wearing them is after 40s issue, and in modern nutrition diet, the body hv enough resources to repair it and only become stronger I shoot twice a weak with nearly 100lb draw. Yet I do 100+ push up everyday, and go swimming 1300m x2 a week, my shoulder is much healthier than 90% of people out there Had been in swordsmanship 10years. Compare to those injury I 'd got during that 10+ years, I had not suffered any damage at all with just a springy stick !
@inregionecaecorum

Yes but if you were hit by an autoimmune disease like Rheumatoid Arthritis, or Multiple Sclerosis, if God forbid you had a stroke, you would find yourself unable to maintain your current regime. I am over 60, I have spinal problems and there is only so much I can recover through excercise, but once the nerves are damaged, the muscles start dying, they don't rcover their former strength no matter what. You have your limits I have mine, I have to tailor my activities according to my capacity. There is a definate point to low draw weight bows, train as hard as I like, 100lb draw weight would be beyond me.
@MarsPHLO
@MarsPHLO 7 жыл бұрын
Dear, no mean to offense and I see and totally agree your point, for someone with discomfort and suffered, as "re-entering" archery a lower weight is suit and should do. My point is, to a health functional adult, at least it is not appropriate to have mind set in archery "lower weight is good because it is less effort"

Btw, I am a thin skiny asian too, 176cm 59kg, but yes, I can pull 100# bow, and I did not trained 10 years for it, it just less than a year before I first grap a bow again.
