The advantage of having Go For The Throat is, in an emergency, you can kill your own Archfiend to avoid losing the game.

That's pretty much the first way I thought to use it. I mean, it's a black card so it's already natural for you to be running destroy effects. Try and use it to close out the game but if your opponent pulls out something to stall you long enough, kill it and move on. Proliferate could keep it going but I'm not up to date on how common those are. Not that they've ever been all that common.

@@Chudpope In this new set, it seems like a common mechanic. Indeed, it seems like a whole set theme, with the number of cards that explicitly key off Proliferation (like the Flying creature that returns from the graveyard to your hand if you Proliferate).

@♢ The Dream Arena From the new set its mostly removing your own counters, not your opponents. Also, the Black/Green limited archetype has a proliferate subtheme, and I think theres enough efficient cards in those colors to abuse the archfiend in standard.

Glissa Sunslayer can remove three counter from the demoni and end the game in one hit, but she' s very predictable

Most opponents are thankfully dead by the time you would remove the last oil counter, however. Main ways they might successfully stall it are with a pacifism-effect (Planar Disruption and new Kaito can both achieve this in standard), or something like Tamiyo to keep it tapped down. I think white has the best emergency resets if these effects become common, between Soul Partition just being an excellent card in general, and The Eternal Wanderer to flicker.

This fiend + vraska splashed in my red green oil counters deck with plenty of red/green removal got me 1st and undefeated at my prerelease. It even got pacified once and I had to keep proliferating every turn to get the win, very fun set.

Yeah, I was a bit unsure about that card at first as well, because I was scared of the loss trigger. But in the end it's still a 4 mana 6/6 flyer that makes the opponent lose life when their stuff dies in a colour that has lots of creature removal

People think about preventing the archfiend downside way too much, in most situations 3 turns is more than enough and kills them or forces removal

Definitely! Drown in Ichor didn’t feel super necessary so could see maxing out on Go for the Throat. Although hitting artifacts can be nice.

I play a Demonic Pact-Harmless Offering-Yorion deck in Explorer. I may add some Archfiends to make up for the less consistent 80 card deck to combo with Harmless Offering. In some ways an Archfiend is better than a Pact since it has an immediate impact on the board state.

Not that they will help much against Mondrak and the other Domini, but... When they are the best answer to multiple Fiends or Oblirators, or a single Thrun, even, our boards will empty very fast.

Is clay champion a little better than rootwire amalgam since it seems rare that you pay the 5 mana and triple it? Or is the flexibility of having a two drop option better?

I built the deck with the aggressive best of one ladder in mind, so having more cheap plays is important. Clay Champ is a decent enabler for Rigging, but not a good payoff as it wouldn’t get any counters. It also forces us to play more tapped dual lands to make sure we cn cast it for GGGG, in turn making it harder to Cut Down early, further weakening the aggro matchups.

I know power creep is a real thing, but ever since baldurs gate I feel like they even turned it up a notch.... (Tyrranax Rex vs Titan of Industry for example) Those rares and mythic rares are getting out of hand wizard - I cant craft that many cards lol

@@Thonieler tyrannax is kind of narrow, good finisher vs control. Titan is much more flexible. Nissan is a much better finisher if you have a board and cast her for 7

@@LegenVD Furthermore, you already have Archfiend of Dross, which is more efficient for beatdowns with less stringent mana requirements. You don't always need to be fancy with the deck. Sometimes, the best way to win is just to win, regardless how tempting destroying the opponent's permanents is.
