In the original pilot episode, in which the show was called Justice For All (1968), Michael was already living with the Bunkers. However, his name wasn't Michael but Richard- a college hippie. They kept the character Gloria . But the family's last name was Justice not Bunker. The theme song in the second pilot was also its title: Those Were The Days (1969). The 1970-1971 aired pilot episode was All In The Family It used the same plotline from the original unaired pilot. A little trivia: of the three pilot episodes, Those Were The Days is the only one not to have the world All in its title. In case you're wondering, Tim McIntire played Richard in the original pilot and Gloria was played by Kelly Jean Peters.

@@MichaelSmith-zh2px For years people thought the original unaired pilot was lost. If I'm not mistaken, it was the first to use videotape. There are some fun things to look for in the 1968 pilot: microphones just above the set, the set is slightly slanted (especially by the front door), Gloria accidentally hits a lampshade while serving Archie and Edith orange juice and Edith's party hat falling off when she accidently bumps into part of the low hanging ceiling. All in all its a great episode. What makes it somewhat unique, is that it was filmed in the middle of the protests happening at the time.

The *ONLY* reason you "people" enjoy it so much is because you never understood that Archie is a satirical character and is meant to highlight those peoples' ignorance. Carroll O'Connor played the part with brilliance!

usually when an actor portrays a character as great as Archie Bunker he gets typecast and it’s hard 2 see them in another role. it’s a great credit to Carrol O’Connor’s talent that he was able 2 portray another character (Heat of the Night)and b just as good.

@@mrsTraveller64 Yes. After he, Gloria and Joey moved to California, they later divorced and Mike went to live on a commune with one of his students after he was fired from his teaching position. Gloria and Joey later moved back to New York and Gloria became a Veterinary assistant. The only reason they had Mike and Gloria divorce was because Rob Reiner didn't want to be on the show anymore, due to being more interested in directing.

Had to be that way. That’s the way all the signals were pointing. Hollywood was at the controls. Look at Sanford. Other black led sit-coms. I’m glad the black American actors got their day in the sun, so to speak. But, God bless us, whitey is not always in the wrong. They’re always ‘D’s”, though. Some things never change.

Famously at odds on “All in the Family,” Archie (Carroll O’Connor) and Meathead (Rob Reiner) are in full political agreement, with O’Connor handing over $5,000 to the Democrats and Reiner a whopping $52,500.
