Archie had a cartoon face. Some of his expressions were funnier than the punchlines of the jokes. He would just narrow his eyes a certain way, and it was hilarious. Carroll O’Connor was such a gifted actor.

I recall that in AITF's first season, Stapleton's _Edith_ character -- although ditzy -- tended to be unsmiling and not as joyful (at least in the episodes I was able to catch). I'm not sure of what caused the change to what we see in the subsequent seasons, but it makes sense that a happily optimistic Edith would work as a great counterpoint to Archie's brooding displeasure.

From the color of skin to religion, from being single to being married, from peace to war, nationalities, Muslims, Mafia, Jews, Christians and so on. This show was 30 years ahead of everything else!! Brilliantly written and fabulously acted by all members of the cast. The best comedy bar none.

In the episode where Mike gives $200 to the McGovern presidential campaign, Archie gives him such a hard time about that he goes to work at a gas station on the side until he earned enough to pay Archie $200. Now that I think about it, it is sometimes funnier when something is implied rather than described bluntly. It makes you want to watch an episode two or more times because there are subtle jokes you missed the first time. It's why I used to watch 1990s episodes of The Simpsons when it was in syndication on weekdays. It was usually an episode I already seen, but it's so jam-packed with humor that I missed the first time. Nonetheless, it's difficult to think of a fart scene from any TV show that hasn't been funny.

exactly brandon. the top 2 shows of all time 1- seinfeld, 2- AITF. the rest are in the dust. as much as i looooooooooooooooove Archie and this show, and i grew up with it as a kid in the 70s, and i loved it so much, that i've seen each episode probably 13x.. what a show!!.. but having said that, and as much as i love archie, nothing comes close to Seinfeld. man, what a show. there will NEVER be a show again like Seinfeld. even if we live to 200 yrs of age. 2 great written shows here, but seinfeld is in a league of its own. .although AITF was great. i loved those 4 together (edith, arch, gloria and mike).. archie is the KING though. he destroys kramer and george as tv characters.
